ccmtcanada Posted December 12, 2012 Report Posted December 12, 2012 With all the threads of people looking forward to ice fishing, I thought I'd post a reminder to everyone. Do you know what is the safe thickness of ice? For walking...or for a vehicle? Do you know what to do if you fall through the ice and there is no one around that can help? Hopefully this will help... <param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"> Chime in with other safety tips on this thread. What safety equipment do you bring along? Be safe everyone!
whiskywizard Posted December 12, 2012 Report Posted December 12, 2012 This is a really good source. It covers everything from clothing to the load ratings on lakes vs rivers, how to set up surveillance drilling, safety measures and even when you can/can't park a load on the ice. It is very conservative. Northwest Territories - field guide to ice construction

kemper Posted December 12, 2012 Report Posted December 12, 2012 Thanks Cliff. I'm sure some idiot will dunk their truck in the next couple weeks, and then be surprised when the 4" of slush didn't hold them up...

bushart Posted December 13, 2012 Report Posted December 13, 2012 "Ice Safety - Do you know what to do???? " Yup---keep my hide off of Simcoe in Mid-to late March with offshore winds that break off entire icebergs and send them floatin into the big chilly---- where they then need to be rescued by everyone available---up to and including Nasa

kickingfrog Posted December 13, 2012 Report Posted December 13, 2012 "Do I know what to do?" Sure, let the biggest guy go first. In all seriousness though we all have to much going for us to take unnecessary risks to get out on the ice for a few fish. Have fun.
jedimaster Posted December 13, 2012 Report Posted December 13, 2012 If the ice is 1.5 inches where you measure who is to say its not 1" think 3 feet away from there. If I drilled a hole and it was 2" I would be hightailing it off the ice haha
tb4me Posted December 13, 2012 Report Posted December 13, 2012 Im not the type to venture out on new ice..Ill let the others do the exploring...I much perfer the beaten path...
