One rod can not be all things to all conditions. At least that's what I tell my wife when I go tackle shoppin'. ;)

Made for a great fight, but, definitely would put alot more stress on the fish. Part of the reason why I asked the "musky" question.

The point wasn't about the power of the rod, it was about the durability. The Voltaeus rods were designed to be significantly lighter than traditional "unbreakable" rods, with more sensitivity, equivalent pricing, more technique specific models and lastly an unprecedented Limited Lifetime Warranty for less than $60.

The sheer fact that Dave was able to run line rated way higher than the rod was recommended for and lean on the fish, eventually getting it to the boat speaks volumes for the quality of the product. If he wanted to really hide the fact that a "shark rod" would bring the fish in faster he easily could have but again that wasn't what he was trying to say... it was solely to demonstrate the toughness.

Here's a piece of the press release for them:

IRVINE, Calif. – New for Spring ‘09 – Engineered with its proprietary ‘Uni-Fiber’ construction process, Shimano kicks off the new year by introducing the new Voltaeus rod series, offered in 29 models for every kind of freshwater use and certain saltwater situations. According to Justin Poe, rod development manager for Shimano, the Uni-Fiber blanks will provide anglers with “an incredibly durable yet lightweight fishing rod with exceptional sensitivity. And no matter what you fish for, you find a Voltaeus in the length and action you want.”

By utilizing three different composite materials – including carbon for sensitivity and lightweight and T-glass for durability - and chemically bonding them together in the manufacturing process, Shimano is able to overcome the adage that an ultra durable rod had to have heavy feel to it. “In designing the Voltaeus rods, we fished with many different rods that are known for their durable, can’t break it image,” said Poe. “While that is a valued feature, anglers today want more than just that – they also want a rod that is light in weight and a true pleasure to fish, sensitive with true defined actions, and built with high-tech components. With Voltaeus, we provide angler’s with today’s version of yesterday’s favorite.”

The Voltaeus series includes 13 freshwater spinning rods – everything from 4’6”, 5’ and 5’6” ultralights, 6’, 6’6 and 7’ medium actions, 6’6” and 7’ medium heavy and 7’ heavy action models. There are two-piece rods offered in 5’6”, 6’, 6’6” and 7’ lengths.

For freshwater casting, the Voltaeus line-up includes 8 rods – 6’, 6’6” (both 1- and 2-piece models) and 7’ medium actions, 6’, 6’6” and 7’ medium heavy actions and a 7’ medium light.

For saltwater situations, Shimano offers 4 spinning and 4 casting models – with 6’6” medium and medium heavy, 7’ medium and 7’6” medium heavy actions offered in both spin and cast versions. All are one-piece models.

“Along with this extensive line-up, a unique construction process to provide both durability and sensitivity, stainless steel guide frames and custom designed reel seats, “ said Poe, “we also back the Voltaeus rods with Shimano’s limited lifetime warranty. For any type of angler and for any type of fishing, you can’t go wrong with Voltaeus.”

So I guess that would make these an "unbreakable", lighter, more sensitive rod than the ugly-type rods?

Sounds like a good thing, $60 makes them especially attractive.

Yeah, you got that right for sure JP. Of course they're not shark rods, they used a shark do demonstrate the rod's durability. Unless they start making rods longer than 7', I won't be buying one for casting big baits....I need 8'+ for that or my back will take a serious beating after a couple of hours casting. Could be an interesting choice for trolling though. I'll get one this season though.

All of TJ's rods are 2 pieces or more...whether he bought them that way or not.

LOL.. that's a fact.. ya its the two piece one im interested in.. with all the 4 wheeler stuff I do, one pieces just don't work.

I have to admit... ive broken my share of rods.. thats a fact.. Im gonna get a couple of these to try though.. ill test 'em out. I like a light rod so Ill get the lightest action they have.

JP wrote a great primer on rod specs... http://ontarioangler.com/fishingrods.html

Don't leave them sticking out the side of your boat and they won't get broken when a guy with no reverse tries to "dock" beside it!!!

I will definitely have a look at those rods. The price point is very good. Not trying to steal this thread but, question for Irish. How much is a plane like that worth and how much to get a licence? Always wanted to learn to fly.
