was in a plane heading south and judging by the timing of it, we were probably close to subject airspace and am fortunate out pilot was able to communicate as fighter jets had the green light to down any unresponsive craft. when I landed, I had to turn around and head back north

I can be lazy on the water so I've often used two perfections to join line to leader. not tight and ideal but has worked so far and no pike or perch was lost due to lack of desire to squint while making knots although the uni or albright would be best

1950's Era, Japanese 5 piece Fly Rod Collectable
woodenboater replied to Darrel's topic in General Discussion
You could always ask the guys at Wilson's (fly fishing shop in Toronto). Figure they would be your best bet unless there's another fly shop out your way. -
Miracon, I rank anyone with good fire starting skills right up there with paddlers who don't whinge about tumplines

Glad you're ok after that incident. I encourage you to file a report with local enforcement, esp if someone is ballsy enough to put those sized rocks on a 4 laner. That was a dangerous situation which could have lead to serious injuries or worse. Wonder if it's a local who's po'ed with traffic on this stretch ? Regardless, what they did was dangerous and if found, should face criminal charges. This also may not be the first time this has happened so a report will help the police figure this out. Fingers crossed that your insurance company does the right thing.

Fly In Trip To The Chapleau Game Preserve
woodenboater replied to solopaddler's topic in General Discussion
Great TR solo ! Looks like everyone had an amazing time at Chapleau and it'll be a great day when the family can pack and portage into the back country. I'm sure Martin and Jennifer really appreciate the handyman work on the shower and power pack. Gotta say though, all the trip reports I'm reading on OFCN are killing me, makes me want to tell SWMBO that we're doing a fly in trip one year. She doesn't fish but if the skies are dark, she's a happy camper with her astronomy. -
Sorry there wasn't a happy medium / compromise that would have benefited you and your family. This is probably the best , if painful decision to make and as Terry noted, priorities come first. As long as the rivers run and the lakes are filled, the fish will be waiting till you can wet a line again. WB

I think this is a move you need to make if you take the long picture. Gaining new work AND life experiences is what it's all about. When I was around 18, I left the Centre of the Universe , aka Hell, for work in London, Ont.. Big change for a big city kid. Loved it totally and in hindsight, am surprised my parents didn't get all clucky about their youngest kid leaving and besides, you'll always have a home to go back to no matter where you are. North Bay wouldn't be too bad a place from the times I've visited there and the year round recreational opportunities available would be rather enviable. Being soooo close to the West Arm and the French would clinch it for me if I were in your shoes. Lastly, there's always the community here at OFCN to lean on if the transition hits a few rough patches. WB

I dunno, looks like there's a frame jump when the carp comes up by the baby yellow. the pike video posted previously was nasty though

Looked like a wonderful trip, busted paddle aside, and I'd be more than happy with those brookies and lakers on an interior trip. Speaking of which, LSPP has picnic tables in the interior ? How backcountry we talking about

Are you getting enough pressure in the tank when you pump ? I just resurrected a super old brass tank Coleman and it fired up fine, blue flame and all, just needed to have the pump leather lubed and reconditioned which is easy peasy. Same generator and pump. I've never used a dual fuel, do you need to swap anything out when going from white gas to auto ? A gurgling sound will tell you the fuel has condensed in the tube and I usually just tip it out to drain.

Hope not, I grew up there waaay back when the Leafs could actually win and some astronomers are already camped in Mount Forest for a start party this weekend. They had severe weather a couple of years ago as well. Hope everyone comes out unscathed tonight. WB

fingers crossed from here loonie and hope your wife kicks the C to the curb for good. WB

Sounds like you've had a full and fulfilling work career Cliff. I'm of the mind that if one can afford it, then retirement is a very viable option. Both my parents were super blue collar (mom worked on Spadina Ave. sweatshops for years) and they never took vacation that I can remember. They were still happy and did everything for the kids so that was their reward I guess. There's so much to do in life so I think you should reap the rewards of your hard work and put the feet up for a spell. Part time work or volunteering can help fill the void left behind by retirement. Think of all the lakes and rivers you can now fish, I'd envy that to no end. I already know what my wife and I will do if we're able to save up enough for early retirement, which btw, is so far off I can't even see the horizon Good luck which ever road you take.

Wal-Mart donates 36 Million to Anti-Fishing Groups
woodenboater replied to Michael_Brown's topic in General Discussion
I think big picture = food will become a major, major issue down the road. how far down ? no idea, but sourcing food is something governments are going to have to deal with sooner or later and food from the seas are an important part of that. I don't see a wholesale shutdown of offshore sport fishing, perhaps selective sensitive areas. If we don't 'manage' things now. there may not be much left to hook. I'll look up Ocean Conservancy later and see if this letter is indeed scare mongering and go from there. and if the Walmart people are smart, they'd best nip this in the bud. -
Wow, awesome trip and definitely respectable sized pike. I'd be getting giddy driving those roads up to the cabin in anticipation of the fishing and good times with buds. Imma gonna have to hit google to figure out which outfitter you used and that load of wood in your pickup would be very nice burning in the stove of my wall tent in about 3 or 4 months

A number of lakes are sanctuaries and thusly closed. http://www.ontariopa...l-multiple.html As well, if I read the Ont regs correctly, of the lakes you listed, only Carlyle is open, all the other lakes are closed year round. Few of my friends who paddle Killarney consider fishing something worth bothering with there. ymmv

fwiw, the Canadian Tire on Eglinton in Leaside has Marine Stabil on sale, 20% off. The small bottle is now $8.39 and sale ends on the 25th. Product is in automotive right beside regular Sta-Bil.

At least that's a start Shawn, however unsatisfactory. If the remaining photos are still making people uncomfortable, then perhaps Joey's advice might need to be taken and see where it goes from there. Hopefully she won't be taking any more hospital photos and that her husband has a good talk with her. Like wildeye rainbow, my dad was in icu for a couple of weeks and it's probably the lowest point anyone can feel so I can get a sense of what this added stress is doing to the family. I guess I'm saying try to ignore or put it in the back of your mind it as best you can although this is tough to do. She doesn't sound like she's very considerate nor compassionate and there may not be anything you can do to change this. Be there for your family and take care of those you cherish. and have a good time fishing, you deserve it. wb

It would have been a nice gesture if she'd at least asked first considering the circumstances. But yeah, I think this was in poor taste if she didn't look as well as I think you're saying. Has anyone else asked her to take them down ? I wouldn't have had a problem if she had pictures taken of herself with your gramma just for memories. I'm sorry your sister had to see the photos which are now her last memories of her grandmother.

I stayed at the MGM Grand during a UFC fight and it was packed, well probably woulda been packed regardless. Close enough to stuff and the monorail line ends at the Grand if you wanna get around. Try and go to Battista's Hole in the Wall, kinda packed with tourons but fun place for dinner one night. Did I mention you get a free glass of home made wine ?

If my old man was still around, catching anything with a dorsal fin would be bonus. Time with him would be topmost and I hope you and your dad get out for many more hail mary's to come.
