I have returned many crushed cans without refusal. They are not reused! They are sold as scrap. The deposit you pay when purchasing the cans in the first place are just that, a deposit to ensure they are returned. Now if they would enact a law to have a mandatory deposit on those dreaded Tim Horton cups they would be doing something worthwhile!

Lower Buckhorn and Rice Lake Report - with Pics
pikehunter replied to Dutch's topic in General Discussion
That's good advise. Good thing you listened to your senses. Sometimes we just don't pay attention to our conscious and go on ahead with our wishes and get into trouble. -

Finally got the boat out (Port Maitland)
pikehunter replied to huey graphite's topic in General Discussion
A good day at Pt Mait. Thanks for the report. My son and I are leaving in about an hour for the very same location. -
I have never boated on Cook's Bay so I can't comment on other boaters behavior. However, I am experienced with upper Simcoe and Couchiching. It can be a boat highway through there especially on weekends and even more so on long weekends. I can remember having my first boat out there, a 12'. WE were anchored near the channel, a big mistake! Those 40' cabin cruisers and large speedboats don't waste any time zipping through there and often they kicked up a good 3' high wake. Pretty scary in a 12'er! You learn in a hurry to smarten up or except the fact you may have to swim to shore. I figure that even though the bigger faster boat has a responsibility so does everyone. It would get pretty frustrating for the operator going fast or getting up on a plane to have to slow it down for every small fishing boat along the edge of a busy channel. I know that's where the fish often hang out but it can be a dangerous place to be.

long shaft transom vs. short shaft transom?
pikehunter replied to blue pickeral's topic in General Discussion
I had the choice of long or short when I bought a new boast a couple of years ago. If you are buying a complete package, boat and motor you are better off with the long, at least for me it was the best option. If you are using a motor you already have that will dictate the transom length... In other words, you gotta short one you're stuck with a short one. -
Good one, nice laugh early in the morning. Thanks for the post.

I was thinking the same. I had a problem twice with my 2005, 25hp Johnson. Older gas, even though it was bought in the same season it had sat around for a month or so. The motor ran OK for a while but started to crap out on me as I neared the last in the tank. Had to run it at a higher throttle or pull out the gas knob to keep it running, sounds like the same symptoms as you have. A fill up of new gas and it ran like a dream once again. Now I use Johnson's own brand of stabilizer/conditioner in the gas. Not only to keep the gas fresher but to help the motor burn the new gas with the added alcohol in it that they are all now selling.

I saw that on the northernmost island. I thought at first it was a real person out there doing some sort of tests or research. The next day he was there again! OK so I figured it was a scarecrow to keep the birds away. Thanks to your post we all know that it was a mechanical Santa! Great idea! Love it. Too bad some fool had to go and take it away I was past there one day and the gulls were all over the island and the cormorants were standing all along the edge looking into the island's centre, I got the impression that they were starting to get brave and accustomed to the Santa. So now he's gone...here's another theory, maybe the weather just got too warm and he hitched a ride to the North Pole

Nice boat. Should be very comfortable and the saving on accommodations will more than cover the fuel costs as I think you may be using a little more with this boat. Be nice to fish from in damp weather. As said, be careful pulling it with a Rav4, it might seem like the tail is wagging the dog if you catch an unexpected wind gust the wrong way.

An algae bloom? Maybe, if this is a current picture then maybe not as I don't think blooms happen till later in the season. I don't think it's storm runoff as the murky water looks more in the middle of Lake O. Storm runoff is usually observed closer to shore.

I dropped in there one day a few weeks ago while passing through while in between appointments. I only spent a couple of dollars on some jig heads and such. The guy on the counter was very helpful and friendly, I didn't get his name but he was of Asian heritage. Would this be Frank? I was going to stop in yesterday as I was right there but drove past before I remembering I was planning on dropping in. I had work on my mind I guess.

Cheap isn't always the best. I went cheap about 20 years ago. Some clown hits me, his fault, do you think my company looked after me? NO! I had my car in a shop and a courtesy car in my driveway before the adjuster even called me back after repeated phone calls to them. Actually I just arrived home and walked in the door when the phone rang, it was my adjuster. She's all cheerful and I told her outright, that I have a rental car parked in the driveway, my car is being repaired right now and I expect it back in 2 to 3 days. I phoned you at least 4 times and you have finally called me back and the accident happened 3 days ago (weekdays.) She says that's great you have it all looked after! I told her yes with no thanks to you! The other guy's insurance company called me immediately, I got the quotes for them and they told me to take the car to any of the shops I wanted to. Done! She should have contacted me sooner to make sure that all was in order and act on my behalf, after all that is partly what they are being paid for. I canceled my policy when it came due. Never had a problem with any other company since. Remember...good things are not cheap and cheap things are not good. Same rule applies with services! Be a tight wad and it might come back and bight you in the ass. Go with a reputable company that charges a fee somewhere in the middle. Start jumping from one company to another and see what type of respect or service you receive. If you stay with the same provider for an extended period you have a little pull when you place a claim. Just look before you jump! Good luck.

Really good report and the pictures were great. Thanks for reminding us who haven't been in that area of what we are missing.

I guess you carry your own TP with you everywhere you go from then on Photoz. After that incident I wouldn't leave home without it!

Yep! Sunny's can be a lot of fun especially for the young ones. Looks like a good day with family, these good memories will be with you for years.

A crane operator job just opened up! See what happens when you have too much money, god gets even in a nasty way.

I and many couldn't agree more! Too many exceptions and tight little areas where the exceptions cover. Way too confusing. Just set one set of rules for each geographic area and be done with it. If the rules need to be tight then so be it. I'd rather it be easy to understand and less to read. So if a broader area must be included in more specific rules then just do so, the fish will probably be better off anyway. Just make the whole damn reg book easier to understand, I don't need a brain hemorrhage every time I open the cover!

Thanks for the comments guys. Yep I have done a lot of stupid things besides the boat winch incident. The plug...one time so far. I launched, left my son to tie the boat while I parked and came back to find him dragging the stern end of the boat up on a half submerged dock to stop the water from coming in. Safety lanyard emergency stop, I have forgot that many times too. When I was younger I started my Father's 9.9 Evinrude in forward gear almost crashing it into the rocks in front of their cottage. I guess it didn't have a safety to prevent it from starting in gear and I didn't know any better at the time. In gear, done that more than one time, sat at the ramp in Orillia one day pushing and pushing the starter button and couldn't figure out why the motor would not go, or even had any juice running to it! A guy with an expensive glittery bass boat waiting to launch is standing there looking down at us and says, "Take it out of gear before you try to start it." I felt like Curly Larry and Moe all rolled together into one big Stooge.
