  1. That last photo is dramatic! haha. You didn't use a rock to put it out of it's misery did you? jk jk jk.
  2. very cool Lew. My Dad has been writting a novel based deeply on our family's history, including farming and our native bloodlines. He isn't sharing any of it just yet, can't wait to see how we used to live. Reading the stories above, I really find it interesting how dependent people were on fish for food and how no one concerned too much about the species, only the amount of protein.
  3. A cellar is one of the next big 'lifestyle' items on my list. I have sandy soils and very steep slope in my backyard, I was thinking of excavating it out next year maybe into the slope. Good place to store homemade beer/wine if I ever do so. No Excavators in the early 1900's, right?
  4. Thanks for that Bruce. I find it funny how back then you needed to do those things to sustain and not die, and yet nowdays you'd lose money doing it. I mean,... if I ever quit my job to self sustain, well I couldn't afford my property and my children (6 months away) couldn't keep up with the modern world. Sure makes it hard to even consider reverting to the old ways. It's our own fault/choice but wow we are enslaved to corporations and governments.
  5. for the blind or standing on ice for long periods of time, check out the Cabela's Saskatchewan boots, and they come in camo. I've used them hard for 5 years and still on the original liners, water and scent proof. I bought spares incase they discontinue them. They are not great for walking because they are so tall...
  6. Cool. I like this. Thanks Art. My wife makes and sells lip balm. Her brand is "SIMPLY CHAP" It is made with three base ingredients: Coconut Oil, Beeswax and Vitamin E Oil. Also available is added: Selected Essential Oils (Grapefruit and Eucalyptus). Good for the fishermen, fisherwomen and the fisherkids in the family. The stuff works really well as a hand balm too, especially in winter. $5 each, no tax PM me your email and/or phone number and she'll make contact with you ASAP. Or, visit her facebook page http://www.facebook.com/simplychap and send her a message.
  7. For dinner tonight I boiled a couple plucked partridge with potatoes, then baked it all with spinnach for 10 mins. I kept the stock and froze it for future use. It was a simple dinner but obviously delicious. As much as possible, we've been trying to simplify our food by foraging, hunting and even breeding rabbits. More to come, including pheasants and/or chickens and gardens. But really, we'll likely always depend at least 80% on grocery stores. Ever wonder how much effort and resourcefulness it would have taken a couple hundred years ago to feed a family, likely a LARGE family and the things we would be without? I mean, where would I get spinach or any fresh leafy greens at this time of year? And hunting a bird wouldn't be this easy. As long as you have the means, and since you are all on the internet right now, you do!, we have a very convienent life foodwise don't we?
  8. It's just a stupid move in public. It that happens deep in the bush, hit with a truck or four-wheeler, with no gun in hand, then you dispatch it by any means necessary to avoid suffering, don't call anyone and don't keep the meat, or call the MNR and then try to keep the meat.
  9. Ya, I wouldn't be happy to find someone hunting in my urban back yard, especially since there are 'two sets of rules', the ones I follow and the other ones that are unwritten and/or vague. If there is to be hunting on adjacent and/or city limits property, then full communication, debate and rules need to be written...for everyones sake. Hunt all the deer you want but be smart about it...no?
  10. -14 here and JUST enough snow to test out the new sled. Oh and i've calculated that it would take just over 3months to pile up 40 cars on my road haha.
  11. Beat the thing to death? You should work for a media outlet. "serial bear smasher murders Pooh's sister in public bludgening; bear rape suspected"
  12. That would be my suggestion as well...and an 8lbs maul would help as well. I have a pile of birch I'm gonna hero split this winter...seriously you'll feel like superman blasting through your pile. YOu'll never split in the summer again.
  13. I'm selling two Three wheelers right now. One guy emailed me three times asking "you stil hav hondAs?". On the last occasion I emailed him back and said the bank transfer had been completed, I received his money and that he could pick up the machines whenever he felt like it.
  14. Agreed with the 'busy road' assessment. Leave it, stay low key and don't take a chance at being posted all over the internet. As much as I'd want to dispatch the hurt animal, if I knew I'd be all over the internet for it, I'd sit quickly in my truck enjoying the irony of some people thinking that it's best to leave the animal suffer because the visuals aren't 'as bad'. Nature moves on anyway, we have cars, there will be accidents, blood will be spilled, get over it. Sucks to be this guy.
  15. Relax everyone. Cliffs is not a friendly company. They are playing war games right now. It's their way or the highway and they are folding their arms and pretending to quit the game. I was a shareholder in the company that sold the deposits (Thor, Big Daddy) and Cliffs bought the resource at a very low cost relative to the value of the metal in the ground. When they purchased the claims, they took the lead on developing the area and made all kinds of promises and projections... and the media reported on it. Now that things are not going their way they are blaming everyone they can. KWG resource, hydro prices, Ont Gov. Cliffs is angry at the province because the province WON"T FORCE another company to allow Cliffs to have a shipping right of way on their claim (KWG Resources). If you were a competing company and CLiffs had screwed you in the past, would you want Cliffs to have special treatment, and force you to give them access to your land? Cliffs is simply leveraging the threat of a 'lost opportunity' upon Ontario. The ring of fire is still progressing. There are MANY more companies still developing mines and deposits. Cliffs is a big powerful company that has a history of making its presence felt. don't ever let a single company have any power over a government, no matter how incompetent you think that governement is. That is the stupidest thing we could ever wish for as a population. EDIT: and one more thing, You won't see Cliffs selling this deposit anytime soon.
  16. If the actual question/comment is exactly "Is driving down the 401 with a dead animal purposely displayed in order to get shock value a JA move?".... I obviously vote yes, as would most I'm sure haha, but if you did it Hearst it probably wouldn't be for shock value.
  17. Certainly looks like a perfect day for fishing. You picked a good day to get out.
  18. As much as I hate listening to all vocals forms of Ted Nuggent, THAT is some Ted Nuggent like talk right there hahaha.
  19. I've been thinking about that place... its a great early and late season spot....not sure we'll have safe ice before Dec 15th, despite my wishes. Winter is forecasted to really grab a hold in January. Env. Can. and other sources are calling for a 'normal' winter, which basically means its gonna be a good one!
  20. Albino, or just sun bleached? It actually swam away?
  21. oohh right, I was second guessing, thinking maybe it was Joey haha. Good times..
  22. You are doing some good taking all those kids/people out fishing! Not a bad collection of photos
