  1. Yep, nip can be difficult to fish. Took me a while to hone in on consistent action. My spots in callander bay seem to have slowed down over the years
  2. Sounds like a great idea! Maybe a short history on fishing as a necessity, culture and tradition. I like to believe that our right to fish and hunt comes (and stays) from the fact that it's in our blood and DNA, not just because the lawmakers said we could do it.
  3. Government represents more than the economy. If oleary was the finance minister or a leading economical consultant I could handle that, but he is way less qualified to lead a full government and a society than any current candidate. I have little sympathy for double-talking and money wasting politicians, and I have just as little sympathy for rich businessmen. I dumped my ballot in the last provincial election so I have no heart for our current government.
  4. I am by no means a dedicated liberal. I could explain why, but that's a boring read for this thread Oleary isn't the first person to try and take the gov to task. He's just louder than everyone else. If you think he is putting out original ideas and is "right" then you watch too much TV and get too easily star struck I have no issues with him trying to address fiscal mismanagement, and he would make a good government consultant, but in no way do I want him to have any serious political control in Canada
  5. If any other "dragon" was merging from business to Gov, I'd be much more ok with it. Leary is nothing but a reality TV star in thin disguise.
  6. Self serving wiener.
  7. One hell of a day indeed! Well done
  8. Sweet! Those herring look great, not like the gross fat wormy Nipising herring
  9. I got a pm from Dutch asking about Callander Bay for Friday, I said: "wanna join with me instead?" This worked out perfectly, we met on time and got along fantastically. His brother in law joined him, and really, they couldn't be better guys to spend a day on the ice with. There is an open invite anytime guys! (they said the same so I'm holding them to it ) We drove the two vehicles on the ice. The pressure-crack crossings were in good shape, so Dutch's pucker levels were kept under control. The fishing was, what I would consider to be, slow. We had a hard time finding any consistency during the day, but the bite picked up around 4;30 and the numbers started rising. All in all, the fishing wasn't as good I've known it to be, but this one beast made it worthwhile! 28" This was Dutch's first hook-up, we joked that he was the only guy on Nipissing to be batting 100% for keepers. 23" I've been hearing the keeper ratio is close to 1 in 100 this year. We ended up with 4 keepers out of around 25 total fish caught. 'nother great day on the ice!
  10. 22" of ice on Nipissing today says the fishing season will be closed long before the ice ever melts
  11. For anyone in Northern Ontario who is interested, there is another attempt at creating a Northern Ontario-specific province/political party. Take a look. (I know this change.org site is rather irritating, but it's the only place I'm aware of with the N.Ont stuff right now) https://www.change.org/p/justin-trudeau-kathleen-wynne-northern-ontario-mayors-northern-ontario-peoples-petition-to-create-the-province-of-northern-ontario
  12. There should be a minimum 'content' system, for every two fishing-related posts you get the right to post 1 non-fishing post. Of course, I'm kidding, people should be able to self-monitor their own yaketty-yak, and I don't mind the system we have here, but I like to think that without my fishing posts I'm just another wind bag.
  13. Gaaaa, no facebook either. Oh well, someone will get to enjoy this great prize! Have fun Mike.
  14. Not to worry, we will all get raises accordingly. Saaaarcasm
  15. And dip your shoes in bacon grease first.
  16. I agree with the intent of the law regarding shooting sows, but I also agree with Dara that the fines are way too high. If that's what it takes to open up the season however (and pander to the stuffed animal crowd) then I'm ok with it.
  17. Don't worry Joey, if Nip runs out of walleye, they'll stock it with splake.
  18. I was out there again today with a friend, only 27 walleye and 1 keeper
  19. Nice off-road boots in the one picture. Someone needs to paint Chris' canoe bright yellow some day; watch his head explode.
  20. Sweetspot...yes. We've always done well there, but nothing like the action this day. In my opinion, completely unscientific but based on some knowledge and history of the lake, I'd say Nip has recovered a bit since it hit rock bottom, but in a couple more years you'll see even bigger gains. If the keep rates stay low, in 4 years this will be an absolute fish factory again. Nip just keeps trying and trying to recover...it just needed some breathing space, which I think the new MNR and FN rules are giving it. We need to remember that Nip was never known as a size lake. It was always a numbers lake. I hear lots of people this year catching 10-20 a day, which if you compare to any other lake in the area, is a great day of fishing.
  21. Sap is running already!? Wow. My trees won't be ready until mid to late march if I'm lucky. I kept sap for a couple weeks at a time by burying the full buckets (lids on!) in the snow; but my conditions are likely quite different than yours. And, yes, go ahead and skim off the bit of ice on top. The sap freezes too so don't be too zealous and start throwing out frozen sap. One of my favourite things to do is to grab that small chunk of floating ice and drink any liquid dripping off it. I can't wait for syrup season!! Good luck
  22. I believe it would, but obviously reading the policy or calling the provider would clarify
  23. With the amount of time you put in, you are bound to get your speckasaurus soon.
  24. Nothing beats a shoreline fire.
