  1. I think Rona have a special on paint this weekend Craig Fingers crossed the weather-folks are wrong!
  2. LMAO - get some carb cleaner in there Dara, Creemore make a good one O/P - if it overheated when the gasket failed, it probably the head, it needs to go to a machine shop to be skimmed. If the head bolts weren't tightened correctly and in the right order that could cause the gasket to leak as it won't seat it properly.
  3. LOL - seriously? I'm sure one is more than enough
  4. Perhaps you should start QFN then Thanks for the link Craig
  5. The places I had in mind are blown now that but would have been spot-on by the weekend given no more rain I'm not so desperate to get out on opener that I'm prepared to risk wading a muddy river with 3 feet of extra water - one is currently currently running at twice the amount I'd consider wading in. I'll go for a walk to one of the closer places with my gear in the car on the off-chance though
  6. I have a day off on Monday and had great plans to give my new fly gear a run on the rivers - looks like it's not going to happen though
  7. Seeing as he didn't touch the valves and assuming it was OK before the gasket failed, it may be that the new gasket isn't sealing properly or the head has warped. Is the compression off on just one cylinder?
  8. Why even get up from your chair? Googling Zone 16 Fishing regs came up with this http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/stdprodconsume/groups/lr/@mnr/@letsfish/documents/document/mnr_e001335.pdf The marvels of the internet
  9. Are you sure? It's still on the Rapala site http://www.rapala.com/products/lures/countdown/
  10. Don't know where you are but Angling Specialties in Mississauga carry quite a bit of rod building gear
  11. Trout Unlimited are holding work days on Bronte Creek on the following dates through this year - April 30th, May 7th, June 18th, July 16th, Aug 6th, Aug 13th, Sept 10th. I'll probably get out to few to lend a hand, more info on the project on their blog http://brontecreekrenewal.blogspot.com/
  12. If you can move them by hand, I'd be checking the linkage between the motor and the wipers, I'm not familiar with the Sunfire but alot of them are ball and socket or shaft and circlip type arrangements and you may just be able to pop it back together.
  13. Never seen those before - clever idea, the website says "Eliminates bearing re-packing" so I guess as long as your seals are in good condition (if there is grease in the bearing buddy they must be) then they shouldn't need re-packing. http://www.bearingbuddy.com/
  14. LMAO - our old black cat sleeps on my lap while I'm fly tying (she knows I'm not going anywhere for a while) which gave me an idea - cat fur makes great dubbing! I use the fur from the brush though, I don't pluck it as I need it! Back on topic, can't believe someone would go out stealing cats and with a kid too!!!
  15. If you're fishing with and 8 weight rod, you need an 8 weight line (or maybe a 9) and a reel that can hold teh line and plenty of backing so you need a 7/8 model in that reel. Fly lines are generally around 90 feet long and a decent carp will take that easily, then you're into your backing. Backing is usually 20lb dacron or similar and you generally have 100yds or so under your fly line. In all honesty, I'd go for the SLV and spend the extra $20 on leader, tippet and flies. You won't be cheaping out doing that, the Okuma is a good reel for your needs, just make sure you get one that will hold a WF8 (weight forward taper, 8 weight) line plus 100yds+ of backing. Of course if you want the bling....
  16. There's an 8/9 weight rod for sale on here > http://www.ofncommunity.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=52000 Nothing to do with me but that plus a cheapish disc drag reel (you need a good drag for carp!) and a 9 weight line (Something like a bass taper to cast bigger flies) and you'd be up and running for less than $200 I reckon. For reels take a look here - the Okuma SLV is very good (I have one in 4/5) or the Amundson Rocky Mountain would do the job too, not so sure about the plastic ones. Like those corn flies Chris - not sure what size hook that is but you might want to shorten the hairs, I've seen carp feeding on the surface come up and put their lips round baits and drop down again rather than sucking them in and I think they could take the 'corn' but not the hook the way you have them now. Feel free to tell me to mind my own business
  17. First and foremost get out more, so I can.... Catch a pike on a fly (never caught a pike so may as well kill two birds with one stone) Explore more local area streams Catch a Canadian carp - on a fly would be nice but I'm not too fussy I too need to start a fishing journal (thanks for the reminder PainInTheBass!)
  18. Looks like nothing is open - even pike has a different season in that area and it closes at the end of Feb http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/stdprodconsume/groups/lr/@mnr/@letsfish/documents/document/mnr_e001335.pdf
  19. Look at koi carp specialists - they may have the kind of thing you're looking for. Alternatively see if you can find the dynamite distributor, they do big bags but not many shops stock them.
  20. Because CNR probably owns the land a few metres (at least) either side of the tracks and going on that land is trespassing, anyway if they said "south of the tracks", some moron would stand right by the southernmost rail on the bridge
  21. Without wishing to steal hammercarp's thunder, I use a "knotless knot" for this - don't ask me why it's called that Here's how it's tied.... If you don't want the hair, just trim the tag end off - I put a drop of know glue/crazy glue on it but you don't have to. It's a good rig, makes it very hard for the fish to eject the bait without getting hooked.
  22. Thanks, I'll take you up on that when (if?) the weather warms up a bit
  23. Well the Dyna-King is around $175 and there's plenty to go at in that range. Do you need a rotary? FWIW I was in Bass Pro at the weekend and the Peak rotary the have seems like a nice solid piece of kit and is $160, I ended up with a Terra Silverado for $50 as I don't need rotary and can't justify spending loads on a vice that won't see that much use. Did a quick Google on the Dyna King and it gets good reviews (all their stuff is good) so if you like it and it's in budget, go for it
  24. I have a pair of White River waders and they seem decent enough especially for the price, I think they're s tep down from the ones in the flyer (based on the price). I think the key is getting the right size, if they're tight, they'll hole more easily although if they're too big they'll rub.
  25. Nice fish Love the use of the foam roller too - ingenious That's it - I'm going to dust off my baitrunners and carp rods and head for Hamilton. For those who only have spinning reels - you can mimic a baitrunner by turning down the drag or leav ethe bail arm open and use a bait clip (which can be made from the end of a popsicle stick and some electrical tape to hold it to the handle) and you don't need alarms, just use a bobbin - when I was younger in the UK I used a wine cork with a hair clip stuck in it that was tied to the front rod rest and weighted if it was windy.
