OK first thing - BP are finiancially responsible for every cent the cleanup costs and have to pay for all the damage incurred, that's the law and they know it - just look at what's happened to their share price. It's very easy to slam big oil companies as you sit on a plastic chair typing on a plastic keyboard and clicking a plastic mouse to talk about which soft plastic lure you'd take out of your plastic tackle box and tie onto your nylon line perhaps sitting in your gas powered boat having driven to the water in your gas powered car or truck - there's something of an oil theme here..... The events in the Gulf of Mexico are terrible and lets not forget 11 people died in the explosion but the problem goes deeper than corporate greed, it's the reliance of world at large on oil and the products we get from it that is forcing drilling to take place in mile deep water, all the easy, shallow wells have been exhasuted and even though technology has advanced so we can reach the previously inaccessible supplies, it's still a risky/dangerous business. I'm not condoning corner cutting by anyone (the work was being done by TransOcean, not BP by the way) but until attitudes shift oil exploration will be a necessary evil. I'm no better or worse than anyone else, we have two cars in our household etc. but I'm not naive enough to think I can blame oil spills on big corporates with a clear conscience. Apologies for going on - think I'll put my flame suit on now

Looking on the Amundson site, it slooks like the Costco outfit is actually this one so potentialy almost $300 worth http://www.amundson.ca/flyfishing/topfly/topfly_combo.html It may not be the best quality money can buy, it should be half decent as a starter kit. Is it website only - would be good to be able to get a feel of the rod first but it's a mediuim fast action and that's what you want as a beginner (assuming you are new to fly fishing - apologies if you're not)

what the hell was he thinking? Fisherman marries P3TA member - does she have beer flavoured nipples? Oh, and I'd take him up there for the day and have "car problems"

It's that time of year Again - Fishing licence Renewal
cuzza replied to Uncle Buck's topic in General Discussion
Thanks Dara, does that mean I can never do online renewals for it? -
I'll be out to see it in Oakville tomorrow, supposed to be some canoeists involved as well - they just need to get rid of the sheet of ice on the river first

I just get the option to updtae my details or re-print, nothing about renewal. Do I have to wait for it to expire? I have a 1 year that I gopt from BPS if that makes a difference. -
Cool Bloody knuckles sounds about right though

You use fly gear with a downrigger?
-
The Orvis Battenkills are bulletproof, will take anything you throw at them and fit into your budget (never used one but know plenty who do). I use a Shimano which is now re-badged as a Loomis (all Loomis reels are Shimano-made) - it's very smooth and has a great drag, I think it looks nice too so it covers all the bases a fly reel should!!

Too right - WD40 stands for Water Dispersant 40th attempt Canadian Tire do a WD40 pen which is useful for tight spots http://reviews.canadiantire.ca/9045/0381508P/reviews.htm

As well as my suggestion about moisture, if the signals and lights are on the same 'stalk' you could just try replacing the stalk, it'd be less than $650 and if you fit it yourself, you can probably take it back if the problem remains (might want to check that though) Have you done a Google to see if anyone else has the same problem on the same car? Could be a known problem.

If it only does it in the cold weather, it's probably condensation getting in and shorting something out (doubly so if the problem goes away on a long run whene everything has had time to get warm). I don't know the car you refer to in any detail but have a look in the engine compartment for black boxes containing relays like these http://www.reuk.co.uk/OtherImages/selectio...tive-relays.jpg and make sure there's no moisture in there. They are sometimes near the drains and if they are blocked up with leaves that can cause problems too. I hate electrical problems with cars

Agreed - although if you have to use monofilament then leaving longer tags helps the knot through the rings. I've used dental floss for all sorts of things too - un-waxed frays easily at the ends but is more flexible so waxed is probably better for stop knots
-
Just what I was thinking as I read the original post - stop knot diagram.... http://www.pacgb.co.uk/tips/stopknot.html

Depends on where you're planning on going but a good starter would be a 9' to 9'6" #6/7 weight rod with a medium or medium-fast action, add a 7 weight floating line (weight forward taper is easier to cast) and a reel and you're good to go. Don't worry too much about the reel, it's a line store and not much else especially if you're trouting so spend your cash on a decent rod and line. If you can get someone to give you some casting lessons with your own gear once you have it, that'll help you along. Twocoda - what are you fly fishing for in Decemeber????

Oops - can I play my "new in north america" card now? While I was looking at a map on Google I looked up Rotenone - it breaks down in sunlight and last 6 days tops so presumebalty won't get too far in that time
-
LOL @ Mike I assume this stuff breaks down pretty quickly otherwise it'll just end up in the great lakes like the carp would - or am I missing the point?
-
Can't help but agree with the majority of the posts, if you need lessons in using the gear then you're not ready to make a living out of it - I'd be very unimpressed if I chartered a boat and the guy running it didn't know what he was doing, it only takes a few people with a bad experience to ruin your business. What about renting the boat out but not your services? That'd help pay for it and the upkeep while you learn the ropes.

I was wondering the same thing, they look similar in shape, fin pattern etc. never thought they'd be able to survive in fresh water though - found this pic of a small "sea ling" for comparison, the British record for them is 59lb!!!
-
What's the difference between these and normal cheapo shot?
-
Thanks guys - much obliged

OK, I have a day off on Friday and wanted to head out and catch a few fish as I haven't been out locally in ages. Now silly season has died down on the Lake Ontario harbours, I was going to head to one of them but the main question is whether the fish that are there through the summer (not talking species like salmon here) are still around or do they move into the deeper water as things cool down? Just trying to findout whether it's a complete waste of time or not really as I haven't fished fall over here yet. Thanks

cleaning the IACV is a good place to start but it could be a temperature sensor, that would cause the idle to go up and down if the engine can't work out whether it's hot or cold. Good job on the heater Biteme, hope you don't end up with loads of rattles after taking the dash out!

I'm in Oakville so thinking Mountsberg, Kelso etc. - I'll look into it in the spring - thanks!!

Can't see the pictures (work internet restrictions) Where do you rent fishing specific kayaks? Quite like the idea of a kayak for fishing conservation areas etc. but they only rent normal canoes.
