  1. crowes landing - not sure if that is the one above or abour parking. only one on my lake chart
  2. we sold several locks at our trailer shop, the sturdiest lookin one was called a gorilla lock at around 40$. CT sells tongue locks cheaper but this thing was beefy! chain thru the tires is a good low tech deterrent (funny story my partner towed a 26' for 5kms before figuring out the black strip down the highway and the blue smoke was not normal). some other ideas we came up with -long term storage or a week left at strange boat ramp - remove the bolts and take the coupler with you! -most of our boats trailers were huge and had pipe mount jacks, lower the trailer as low as you can onto a block and take the jack with you! kind of a hassle but in both cases would be thieves would have brought devices to conquer a lock but unlikely to have brought a spare coupler or jack sorry to hear about your troubles hope the replacement goes well!
  3. if you are thinking temagami check tamarvacations.com. great spot for the guys, starting with a barge ride across temagami and a stay at a very private island (see - no rules in the dictionary)
  4. with my luck - if i caught a 6lb walleye i would probably have a heart attack.
  5. are we sure some frustrated fisherman didn't pitch them out of the sunroof?
  6. FT i used primarily Goodyear Marathons in our trailer maunfacturing business. Carlisle was a standard name in the business but that was mostly pricing. the marathons held up best for us, built hundreds of BIG boat trailers had very few warranty issues. Dont want to doubt you never seen the tire you have but 80psi sounds awful high??? trailer tires due to their hard compunds and sidewall strenght are prone to failure after extended sitting, they like to be driven. not sure if that played a factor in your failure but was a common factor i would hear. if you are concerned about your load rating we would occasionally use larger width tires (think double seadoo) where we would get larger capacities and still say low. this migt require a different fender setup. anyhoo my reccomendation is the goodyear marathon and always have a spare!!
  7. a lke ontario tough guy, clearly with something to prove to his fish buddies
  8. did a little fishing on a lake south of parry sound called blackstone. fish were right up on shore (and i mean right up) or on the shelves just offshore. managed five largies and a pike on the trip to the cottage! later found lots of smallmouth on the bottom at around 14', they liked the leeches and to a smaller extent finally.....the berkly gulp minnow!!! jigging much more effective than working the weeds and shorelines. water temps around 74 blackstone and crane are connected by a fantastic river system that is just doable on the trolling motor. great ride.
  9. ive been watching some of these trolling motor threads - i run an 80lb minn kota at 24v and im not kidding you, ill fish for a week without charging them. absolutely unbelievable! not sure why but this is the performance i get. ill check on the actual battery manufacture but they are charged thru a minn kota on board charger.
  10. there was a picture on the longpoint page about an unnamed charter showing 68 bass laid out on the lawn. how many of those fish will get eaten? you know as well as i do they will sit in a tupperware container in the freezer "til we have enough for a big feed" then 4 months later they'll be found and chucked out. killed for no reason. of every picture we see of a nice fat bass that "was released" half are taken on shore with the guys car in the background - that fish is dead. worm filled, slimy, soft fleshed largemouth yum!!! the piles of giant walleye dragged up on downriggers seem to get released as well but they always seem to be laid out on cardboard with a knife in the picture. as much as recreational angling will never touch commercial fishing numbers i still shake my head at people keeping big fish. however having said that the conservation gurus set these limits and i trust they know what they are doing. at the end of the day anyone not going over their limit is guilty of nothing.
  11. i use navionics hotmaps premium. has good coverage but really depends on the year you purchase. older ones are cheaper but have less definition. i have a humminbird 580 and i think a better unit would show more of the cards potential.
  12. my 2 cents-m not too familiar with the weights but i have used power pro for years and i cant believe you are having multiple cases of the line breaking. i use 20lb and 50lb and i could put it in a dryer full of broken glass and then tow my boat with it. i cant damage or break the stuff, regardless of abrasion or tension. usually the hood straithens, swivels or knots fail. the palomar seems to be the best knot with braided. like i say, not sure about the weights but i get years out of power pro, if it is failing all the time perhaps it is a bad batch?
  13. depends on the bottom and wind conditons. 15 lbs is a lot of anchor for a 14', but you need that kind of weight in that style as it doesn't really 'bite' that much. a blade style (FLUKE OR DANFORTH) allows you to carry less weight (7lb) and grab a sandy bottom better. on the smooth sands of lake erie when it is windy my 18' could drag 100lb anchor, but i use an 11 lb danforth. only drawback would be on rocky bottoms the flukes can get stuck, and you might lose it! nice call on the chain and the long lines, most conditions call for 5:1 or even 7:1 depth to anchor line ratios.
  14. it might be a little late but the federal publications website sells govt charts and ships next day. one map covers almost half of the severn system for 20-30$. make some 11 by 14 photocopies of the areas you are fishing so the original stays original. dont know where you are travelling from i buy my charts at brewers marine in hamilton. west marine has a retail location in barrie i think that should carry the maps. i have trakmaps trent severn kawarthas collection in a spiral bound book, quite expensive but makes fishing/.boating new area easier.
  15. outrageous. week of neverending fish.it seems like you earned it.
  16. nice choice with the curado. i started with bell sinkers in my driveway. the boat might not be the best place to learn. try to match your line with your intended lures. start by setting the magnet to the weight you are practising with, then make further and further casts, slowly releasing the spool magnets until you are freewheeling. keep practising with progressively lighter weights. sidearm seems much easier in the beginning than overhand. i find braided line to nest up less than mono, plus a good screwup and the mono will get severed in the nest, braid wont. just my experiences - good luck.
  17. that is good to know. i dont know if it has always been this way but the online exam is offering 2 cards when you write your exam.
  18. anything i want to fab up i make out of UHMW (ultra high molecular weight) plastic. you can machine it like wood, its available at surplus shops and such. order it from lee valley or workshop supply.com. lasts forever, looks good.
  19. check the transport canada website for req'd equipment, and maybe grab the safe boating guide. .
  20. i just bought an ontario backroads atlas from chapters. there are similar govt publications at fedpubs.com. the kawarthas backroads fishing maps are sold out til fall.
  21. i bought the boat in the picture with 4 hours on it from a nice fella in michigan, thru ebay. when i showed up to pick up the boat, and hand over my cheque, we both breathed a huge sigh of relief. "we were'nt being scammed!" there are no authorities to report these guys to. in the countries they originate from it is legal and even considered a respectful occupation to scam north americans by turning their own greed against them. kijiji, ebay and the trader really cant verify all of their postings. offer your prospective seller escrow on a large dollar item if you're serious.
  22. this has been going on for years. started on ebay then the trader networks then kijiji. its been on every news special and articles in the paper. if you think someone will sell you a 60,000 dollar BMW for 3,200 you might deserve to lose a little money!
  23. i think daniel m is on to something. at the end of this year quantum blew out their remaining accurist reels by matching them up with 7'6" bill dance baitcasters. you saved the tax, blah blah etc. but the end result was the rod was basically free with the reel. may explain it being in the garbage. good strong rod but heavy to fish with for any length of time. seems too simple but the handle/reel seat spins freely inside the shaft of the rod???
  24. sounds a bit like 'the naked ape' - the human version of territorial imperative. it was usually published in essay collections like thank god for the atom bomb. some books from my past....
  25. absolutely pouring buckets in hamilton. the tarp on the boat is sprung like a bowstring, full of rain and hail in 5 minutes.
