  1. my stradics are great performing, bulletproof reels. however i have found the sedona is a great reel for the money. i cant tell which im using half the time. quite a difference in price as well.
  2. is he's a humminbird guy try to get a 580 out of him. i have this in my boat with a navionics card. easy to use, lots of features, not too much dough. great waranty service from humminbird by the way
  3. if you're fishing around the dam be careful there is all kinds of cheap poly anchor line attached to buckets full of rocks.
  4. i had moderate luck with 3" minnows. caught smallies, sheephead, used the tails for perch. fish seem to hold on longer than regular plastics, and they are quite resilient. leave it on the hook overnight though they harden to cement!
  5. i learned alot from this post and until this year always fished with spinning wquipment. i am wondering if you are doing losts of casting and retrieving should you be looking at a quality baitcaster. as the line spools directly from the front of the real there is no issue with spool size etc. they take some getting used to and seem to like heavier lures and baits but i find my new quantums will outcast my stradics considerabley. of course i dont know what kind of fishin you are doing...
  6. it takes a big fish to rip down a ceiling. i hope you practised good catch and release.
  7. port maitland perch have fled the scene i believe. wont be around in august i wouldn't think. i catch cats and sheephead at the dam, and see scattered boats throughout the run to the lake. ive been told worm harnesses and cranks along the shorelines, watch the fishfinder and pitch to holes or found fish. understand it is slow but steady. looks like good bass territory but posters tell me bass is better above the dam. lots of deep water and it was easy to drive around. decent boat launch behind the arena in dunville for 10$. check some older grand river posts i got lots of advice from here.... thanks again fellas
  8. there is a big difference between CAN you do it and SHOULD you do it. economy cars get great mileage because they are designed to barely pull their own weight. pick ups get terrible mileage because they are built to carry another one on their back. After about 6 years in the marine transport/trailer manufacturing business i came to the conclusion there is no safe load for a small car to tow down the highway. you also need to consider pulling this boat package up a crappy gravel boat ramp by your favorite little river. just my opinion of course because lots of guys pull small trailers and they are not littering the sides of the highway! a rule of thumb i used when deciding what was too big to tow was to look in my mirror, if there is a line of traffic behind you you're pulling too much. you should be able to keep up with traffic flow regardless of what you are towing. keep your vehicle in top shape and beware of hidden loads - i pulled almost 400 lbs of crap out of my tool box in my chevy once!! you gotta do what you gotta do to get out on the lake - good luck in your search!
  9. spill it uglyfish where were you really and how come i didnt know about this tourney? i sat on my couch for 4 hours last night 10 minutes from there.
  10. somebody made a great comment that we'll eat taco bell but not lake ontario salmon. fish size has alot to do with toxicity. older, bigger fish have more contaminants for obvious reasons. just another reason i shake my head when dudes go home with crusty old bass from longpoint instead of 3 little ones. i follow the guide to sportfish as well. except for temagami walleye, id have those 3 meals i day if i could catch 'em.
  11. from shore i lob weighted plastice into the weeds and hope for a hit on the way down. always comes up with cabbage but that is where the fish are. in the boat ill use live baits in the deeper water past the weed beds. on spinnerbaits all i have caught is small catfish, a surprise everytime! crankbaits seem to be ignored. there are nice sized bass in there, not too pretty lookin. if you see me by myself in the blue stratos wave me over.
  12. my outfitter in temagami keeps boats in portage lakes and they get used by just about everybody. seems like the kind of guy that will hump 30 minutes into a back lake is the kind of guy that appreciates not having to carry a boat. it has always worked out, once all our boats were out so we used someone else's - turned out we were in eachother's boats! one thing i would always say about borrowing. now that i have dragged a 14' thru 2 miles of swamp, i feel like i can use someone else's boat when i come across it. you got to ask yourseld when you use or borrow other peoples stuff, somewhere along the chain have you made your contribution? as long as you're using buddy's boat in that trout lake you better be the guy that lends jumper cables at the boat ramp........ also seems kinda dumb to fish from shore when there is a boat just sittin' there..
  13. lexxington you are exactly right - im always one post behind!!
  14. i understood that walleye were not particularly fast swimmers, topping out around 2.8 mph. for that reason i troll around 1.5 mph. my info must be wrong if you are catching fish at 3-5 mph. that sounds fast, that is flat out on my 80 lb trolling motor, id be leaving a wake..
  15. i thought grabbing a pike by the eyes was a myth. i tried it once on a small pike and visibly damaged his eyeballs. however my fish handling has never been that good so perhaps with some practice this method would be okay, seems more folks in favor than against. i have found lately when attempting to subdue uncooperative or dangerous fish like pike a blast of pepper spray or mace seems to make hook removal and photos easier.
  16. ive fished lake temagami for 15 years. i wish i could help you.
  17. i think its great that fishing hosts have to give up all their secrets to the rest of us. you can brag all you want if it helps me bust a slump. guys go hard on pro anglers sometimes because lets face it WE WOULD ALL LIKE TO BE PRO ANGLERS.
  18. yer having better luck than i am. great report guys
  19. where do you launch for deer creek - in the conservation area?
  20. no offense to the OFC but try stomps longpoint page, look at his maps and his advice, then read thru the latest talk on channel 6-8. hope for anything but an east wind. also be aware travelling from dover to the inner bay is almost always wet! start around ec10 and look for warm water, smallies are everywhere in the bay they like leeches.
  21. i access cross lake from where i stay in the south arm. island is 8 miles south of the temagami access road. (about 20 minutes). from there it takes about 25-30 minutes in your boat to access cross lake. you travel thru some good narrows and outlets that are also good for fishing. cross lake is my goto spot in the south arm, i dont know much about the north arm. i have never heard of road access anywhere other than the access rd. (and town of course). so youd be looking at maybe an hour to cross lake from there. there are numerous camping sites along the route which are fairly visible and good to navigate by. late summer can be tricky for fishing, the larger pike seem to be well hidden, and the bass are finicky. try crayfish that late, that seems to be all that is in their stomachs. if you make it to cross lake try the snake pit - i cant tell you where it is though, id be lynched. if any of my local pals know about an acces ill tell you.
  22. tamarvacations.com down in the south arm, real quiet down there they pick you up at the end of old mine rd (temagami access rd) by barge and take you 8 miles to island 856., where you get your houseboat. each has full kitchen and frideg facilites, bathroom with toilet and shower. real nature lovers trip,. you can rent fishing boats there as well. 7052378755
  23. i have an 80lb minn kota terrova with built in sonar on my stratos. it will practically plane on top speed. i think it might go all season on one charge. only complaint or comment would be if you are constantly raising and lowering the motor choose a style with a lift assist and handle, the terrova can be a little dificult. remember with minn kota you can add autopilot and copilot later if you wish. good luck and you might want to listen to the nguyen fellow seems to have done some research....
  24. you made me do it garrrry Pickerel, common name for 3 closely related carnivorous, soft-rayed freshwater fishes in the PIKE family (Esocidae). In parts of Canada, the name is applied, erroneously, to the WALLEYE. The name is derived from an English diminutive of pike. canadian encyclopedia. and no, i dont get invited to alot of parties.
  25. i cant believe im having this conversation again..... while i know that the term pickerel is prevalent in this area and geography is usually the strongest argument the simple fact is walleye and pickerel are two different fish. however, you know what you mean and i know what you mean when we say pickerel. what i have yet to see is what would happen if you caught a walleye (canadian pickerel) and an actual pickerel, and you had both in the livewell. would you say you caught 2 pickerel, or i pickerel 1 walleye, or how would you tell them apart if they are both pickerel - would you have to be from buffalo to know??? an onlooker would be confused when he saw 2 different fish in the bucket but you called them by the same name. hey its your business you can call them whatever you like.
