If I am ever reincarnated as a fish I want to be....
dave524 replied to coreyhkh's topic in General Discussion
When I uses to clean smaller channel cats, I'd drive a spike thru their head, cut them around the back of the head and pull the skin off with pliers, the spike quieted them down -
I'm with DaBluz on this, go with a 10 wt. for pike. I use a 9 1/2 foot 9 wt and a bass bug taper for bass and pike, generally throw big wind resistent spun deer hair surface creations or streamers with enough saddle hackle to make a small feather duster Trying to force this stuff through the air with too light an outfit is more work than letting a line with ample weight carry it for you. Don't need a mile of backing, I can't recall ever have a bass or pike, even pretty good size ones run much into the backing, actually I prefer reels with an exposed rim drag like a float reel ( Hardy Marquis' or clones )for this kind of fishing rather than a disc drag. Put musky on the aggenda and I'd go for a 12 wt.

Anyone fish Davis lake north of kinmount?
dave524 replied to cityfisher's topic in General Discussion
yes, Sandy Bay , where the Gull River flows into Gull Lake. Cast upstream into the river and drift your bait or lure in the current that extends into the lake. Edit: I believe the bows actually run that river up to the dam in Minden much like steelhead in the Great Lakes. -

May , too early for bass, you mentioned Gull? even if you don't want to deal with the boat , I've produced both Lakers and Rainbows from shore working the outflow of the Gull R. into the lake on the north end that time of year over the years. -
Came across the receipt for my old 1982 18 foot centre console Sylvan the other day, talk about sticker shock 18' Sylvan Rodmaster.... .........................$4995 with windshield , grab rail........................$125 85 Johnson Tnt....................................$2800 EZ Load trailer 2000 lb...........................$1200 ..................................................$9120 sales tax.........................................$638.40 labour.............................................$50 ..................................................$9808.40 One thing that is a deal today is electronics, for what I paid for that old Lowrance 1510 paper graph back then , pretty sure would get you a Lowrance hds-7 today the motor was a deal, it was an old stock 1980 85 hp, got it for the same price as a current model 70 hp, always glad I went with the v4 instead of the 3 banger. Drifter, make sure your hull is going to handle that weight on the transom. I know I wouldn't have wanted any more weight back there on my older hull than the V4 that was 310 lbs in the tilt and trim version and a 9.9 kicker, OMC went all the way up to 140hp on that block and weight back then. Hulls weren't designed around 115's that outweighed my main motor and kicker combined.

If you are into brookies, save a wack of cash and get non lakeshore property. Spent a lot of years in Haliburton, all the good brookie water are no cottage lakes, get a tinny and a canoe , 4 wheel drive and your all set. Edit: I would look at the area north of Kawagama before Kenisis or Miskwabi.

One lure that is an oldie has been a consistent walleye producer for me over almost 50 years is the Canadian Wiggler, originally the 1 piece model in chrome but later the new jointed models have worked well in various colours eapecially on Erie for walleye and even spring salmon/trout trolling. price is reasonable and they are virtually indestructable too.

OK, little history lesson when you say Dudmon Lake, all the oldtimers there will think you are referring to Loon Lake, the name at one time was Dudmon Lake. The lake now known as Little Dudmon at one time was Wenona Lake. Makes lttle sense to me to have a Little Dudmon Lake now when the original Dudmon Lake is no longer called Dudmon There is a good public launch on Loon/Dudmon with a large parking area down Ross Point Rd. which is opposite Trappers Trail the access road for Miskwabi on the highway. Not sure about a public ramp on Litle Dudmon/ Wenona. I got by with top sheets for the area but that was in the days before Google Earth With your bike I would first explore an abandoned railroad embankment, tracks are gone that runs south from Tory Hill towards Gooderham, take a rod you might catch a few specs in the creek that runs along it, at least there used to be a few

Sucess on Loon Lake walleye for us was always an dusk/after dark bite cause of the clear water, caught very few during the day. Lakers have been in there since the 80's so there could be some larger ones now. Don't recall ever going deeper than 50 on the riggers for lakers in Loon or Miskwabi, temperature probe always showed a very sharp thermocline around 30' and temps in the high 40's by 50 ', the ones just below the thermocline were always the ones to target, generally inactive fish on bottom.

I know the area very well but my info is somewhat dated. My folks bought a place on Loon in 68 when I was 18 and had it for almost 30 years. When we first got the place on Loon it was a smallmouth/walleye lake, excellent smallies and walleye was passable with good sized ones on occasion...8+ pounders. Later there was musky stocking with a few caught trolling for eyes and later the Ministry added lake trout which we found easy to get off riggers with gang trolls. Miskwabi was our original fav lake trout lake b4 we got them in Loon, good success there with the same method. Long Lake is connected to Miskwabi thru a short navigable channel and it is long and shallow with very good bass fishing for both large and smallmouth. Just off the highway on the road into Miskwabi is Little Dudmon Lake and it has smallmouth and I understand that Rainbows have been stocked there now as well. If you are willing to do some back roading, canoeing and small portages lots of good spec and splake lakes in the area as well. Nice area, miss the place.

I found that just after ice out , look for shallow back bays and channels that have a !!BLACK!! bottom are the first place to hit fish. Minnows or minnow imitators are the ticket.

Grew up within bike range of the Welland River, caught one there in the early 60's near the mouth of Forks Creek, it was a White Crappie, only one I ever got there during lots of worm soaking trips as a teen. Next time I encountered them was at Long Point Bay when I lived there in 73/74. Caught a bunch b4 trout opener in the channels when they were spawning I presume, these were Black Crappies and up 14 inches, great eatin too Curiously, there was also big Bluegills in the channels at the same time, but you could selective chose to fish for either. I would use a 6 wt flyrod and to get Bluegills I would use a floating sponge rubber spider with rubber legs and for the crappie I would use a white maribou stream. Come the summer neither were around in any numbers from shore.

OK, smart guys, why is it when you take spring water that has been sitting down there 100's maybe 1000's of years, put it in a bottle and suddenly it has an expiry date Whats'up with that

I'm with you Billy most of the worst boat launch miscues I've seen are the product of power loading edit: plus backing in that far keeps your trailer wheels out of the blowholes the power loaders leave

Actually, master eye is not about what eye has the best vision, it is more about how the brain is wired to process what you see. On the original thread at almost 62 I learned on baitcasters in the late 50's when switching was the norm, do it without even thinking. In the 60's it was common to see oldtimers with the new on the market open face spinning reels, cast with the right hand, switch and reel in with the reel ON TOP CRANKIN BACKWARDS it was strange to them to reel with the left hand
-
I bet you'll find your left eye is your master or dominant eye, my dad was like that, right handed for everything but when it came to shooting he had to shoot off his left shoulder because of the master eye. Not sure how he shot pool?

We did a lot better with distance than that when we ran the old 40 channel 27Mhz CB's, boat to boat or boat to a base , might want to check in to those.

Depends where you intend to run it in your spread on which rod you use. If I run 10 colours , it is always down the chute right over the main motor on a short 6'6" that was originally a light musky rod, like the short length in that position. The other leadcore rigs are 5 colours with mono backing, just prefer mono in a release clip over braid, they get run off homemade double planer boards, as is or with snap weights for more depth, I prefer longer 9 footers or more in that position, helps keep the line between the release and rod off the water and easier to manouver around the rigger or dipsy rods to net a fish at the back.

Drifter explained exactly like a friends Crestliner cracked, the welds themselves are fine , they crack immmediately adjacent to the welds. This friend was also a multi ticketed maintenance welder at a Hamilton steel mill, excess heating of the material was his best guess at the cause.
