It's a pretty confusing subject. According to the MNR bait dealers are not allowed to buy southern minnows and transport them to Northern Ontario (i.e. outside the VHS management zone). However they made no law prohibiting individual anglers from transporting minnows anywhere across the province. Kind of a weak approach to the problem in my opinion. If you use minnows infected with VHS (whether you release them alive or dead) seems to me there is a good chance you are going to help spread the problem.

I think they should have hired the people who produced the commercials for Newfoundland and Labrador..! They are first rate. Overall, I found the show boring... The most memorable moment was when the kids from Georgia marched in...!

Ha..! I deal with them everyday... Grumpy old fishermen... But they are mostly harmless..!

yeah...my sister is living in Baltimore... they got 30 inches...too.. sure glad I live up north...! -
Thanks for the article Bernie... I find the really serious thing that I read in this news item... is that the once again the MNR in North Bay currently has no biologist dedicated to Lake Nipissing. Ono of Ontario's most important sport fishing lake ... has NO biologist...!!!! That is terrible... I don't believe the fishing is terrible however.. I've seen over the last several years some of the best walleye fishing in this area. The main complaint is many of the fish are in the slot... however each year... we see a steadily increase of fish over the slot.... as the released fish are getting bigger.... I see more 25-inch plus walleye here... every year... I believe strongly in stocking .. something the MNR in North Bay is opposed to.... (of course.. they don't have a biologist who is interested in NIpissing on their staff). Other MNR offices (Sudbury for example) are BIG on walleye stocking ... I believe the MNR management... have their priorities wrong... the cap't

I've seen a couple of blue perch over the years.. kind of rare .. look very similar to blue walleye... some biologist say walleyes go through a blue fade.. maybe the same thing... ?

don't feel so bad Cliff... at the E.!. office the line goes around the block... sad looking fellows in gum boots and plaid jackets....... many still holding on to their bent up fishing rods... some carrying old bait buckets.. (the dream never dies) occasionally one spots an old tattered OFC hat among the crowd... its a horrific scene...

Brutal Accident on Nipissing near Cache Bay
capt_hooked replied to Muskieman's topic in General Discussion
I hate hearing that... but thank you for the news... (I think?) too close to home... those damn snow machines go too fast.. way too fast... my sympathies go out to the families involved.. a real tragedy... -
Welcome to the club Linda... You've got your work cut out for you.... First suggestion: the monies collected from sport fishing licences should be used for 100% fishery management work (i.e. restocking efforts?) and not be used to pay MNR staff salaries...! Good luck! the cap't

capt.hooked theorem: on any given fishing trip the total number of fish caught is inversely proportional to the number of beer that have been consumed. corollary: the success of a fishing trip is not necessarily based on either the number of fish that were caught or the number of beer consumed.

Great video.. the old man knew how to handle fish... I like the tap on top of the head... going to have to try that one...!

I was down near that area couple of weeks back.. (Anna Maria Island)... Tried some pier fishing... cost was only $2.00 for a day pass and no fishing licence was required (included with pier pass - not sure is this is standard for all Florida piers or not???). Caugtt a few small fish with frozen shrimp... it was fun.. Beer, at the pier, was $1.25... Drinking beer and fishing... priceless!

I good friend of mine has campsites and boat rentals on Lake Nipissing... check out www.lakair.com

One theory I heard this past summer... A sharp rise in the smelt population in Nipissing is changing the dynamics. The idea is that the walleye are feasting on the smelt and leaving the perch alone.. thus allowing the perch population to increase rapidly... This is leading to more and larger walleye on Nipissing. Smelt is also wonderful forage for pike and I hear rumours of very large pike being caught in the big waters. the capt.
