  2. This year I have a photo of a 58-incher displayed in our Snakbar...! There's the Lakair challenge...!
  3. p.s. the above weekend package is for two persons.. cheers...
  4. I find it is kind of sad.. when a well intended conversation quickly turns into the indecent and prejudice rules... And when the local media and politicians will not take on the important issues. For fear of stirring up the hornets nest. Unfortunately, not at all unexpected. I do get tired of hearing the red-neck line. It is so predictable. And my meds are just fine...!!! I will try and behave myself in the future...... O.K. I am going to bed now and dream of catching a 60-inch musky....! I need to relieve the stress! the cap't ouch...!
  5. Good luck with the contest and raising money for a good cause... Just to let every one know .. this is a 3 day package for two worth .... $750.00 value... cottage, boat and motor all inclusive... p.s....needs to be used in 2013 cheers... the capt
  6. Fresh Water Drum... only way to go...!
  7. If you are Native are you allowed to fish "off the reserve" with no license?
  8. Looks like the guy is trying to contain the sand.. In the past you (short time ago - 3 years at most) you needed permit from the DFO (dep't of Fisheries and Oceans).. for any shore development that may affect fish habitat and other aquatic life... Then they (the DFO) found out they were so swamped with minor appications (such as above) that they had no time left for the bigger picture... (like 4-laning Hwy. 69 between Alban and Sudbury). When that brain storm came along... (duh..!) ... they immediately suspended consruction on Hwy. 69 for a whole year while the proper? invironemental study was done.. But how many Banting turtles.. must you relocate before givng the MOT the go ahead on the highway project...? Anyway the results are now (for private land owners)... no DFO permits are required as long as you go by their suggested guiide lines.. (you get a nice paper laying it all out). However what is less known is that you are still required to have permits issues by the MOE and the MNR for any such projects... Welcome to beaucrazy run amock...!
  9. Roy is funny...! Tape worms are handy to check the slot ... I have found dew worms in my walleye's stomach... how they get there? Do not throw the tapeworms to the eagles... they taste good in a Caesar salad. And finally... a true story.. I knew a professor of biology at Nipissing University in North Bay.. who grew his own tapeworm... (in his guts) as an experiment... I think when he flushed it out it was some 10 feet long... Now how cool is that....?
  10. Try this one.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A91pY1L9meQ Closer Walk wi Thee.... Clapton, Marsalis and Tag Mahal...
  11. Good post Jeremy ... the guy knew what he was doing... (bass fishing)... maybe did not know the local regs... possibly? So you tell him bass fishing is closed.. see what he says.. and go from there.. Now as laPlumma... says.. many areas.. down south have no closed season.. and plenty of bass... and just this year... the area around and west of Sudbury open bass year round... (too many bass?)... so the rules... may not be the best...? Now about the other issue of one guy pretending to fish one species but really targeting another.. on Nipissing we closed it ALL fishing until opening day... that eliminates the "perch" fishermen hauling off boxes of walleyes.. just prior to the Long Weekend opening... We also had a fall closing on Oct.15.. (to all angling) but the local "meat eaters" convinced the local MNR to reopen the fall season for pike... (Local people here would never be caught eating pike (well o.k. most of them anyway)... But now after October 15 walleye closing ... when the walleyes are really aggressive; you should see all the "pike fishermen" packing into the good walleye spots...
  12. Guys will spend ... hours, searching the web... to try and save $10-20 (o.k.. maybe $40-60)... maybe? on a flat of worms... get the best price... Then end up in some fishing lodge and put the flat in the guy's fridge... the worms... crawl and the owner of the lodge has to completely tear the fridge apart.... (all the inside walls)... the worms.. get into every space.... two hours or more to clean up this mess.... Party of six guys.. saving what $30.00.. (this is $5.00 per guy)... on a trip that probably costs them.. maybe $250-$500 per guy... Same guys spending each $80 on two cases of beer... Sheesh... total nonsense...
  13. I love pickerel... but they are hard to find...! The local restaurants sell pickerel for $10.99 a plate.. don't know where they get it from... you ask.. they don't say..?! And I know it's not coming from commercial fishers... cause you can not use gill nets in 3 feet of weedy waters... must be a bunch of kids... figured it out.. (catch a bunch and sell to the local food places... on the weekends..)... I dunno? Time I tried it... tasted much more like Rose fish to me... but the menu would not lie..???? Probably a typo? Can't wait to get back out on the waters...
  14. this post is so "sick" ... Lew.. you're the man... not afraid to ask the tough questions... the rest of us.... just sitting back like we know? what's knowing on.... My son posts on facebook... I have NO idea what he's saying...?!
  15. Not sure about "flat" worms...? One of my guests who does the very best on walleyes.... uses "straight" worms only...... These are only available at fine bait dealers... But man do they work...!!! Stay away from the crooked worms...! the capt..
  16. 5 days until opening...! my prediction: late spring.. cold water.. means.. good for big pike, chasing spawning minnows... walleyes will be slow... and much better one week later as water warms up... But as soon as you make a prediction the fish... will mess with you...! go Leafs...!!!!!
  17. The MNR's budget is a very small portion of the Ontario Gov't's annual funds.. (like 3%?) This 3% covers all natural resources (mining, forestry, fish and wildlife). Until the Ontario government understands that our Natural Resources are more important than casinos... we are in trouble... The local MNR boys work hard .. but their hands are tied by lack of funds... (mostly).. However it is still hard to understand why the North Bay office is so much opposed to walleye stocking (their attitude is natural reproduction is better than a "put and take" fishery). Other MNR districts (Sudbury for one.. is all for stocking) and fully understand the benefits... Although the North Bay office has no money to support walleye stocking .. they could support us by allowing us to expand our stocking program on Lake Nipissing.. We (the local population and camp operators) can come up with some very inventive ideas to raise the funds... no costs to the MNR... just let us stock some fish! Vale (Inco) is raising walleye fingerlings underground and is excited about helping local areas increase their walleye stocks... Remember that our yellow walleyes are all the result of a massive stocking effort by the MNR in the early 1920s... Before that we only had the smaller blue walleyes... These would have been too small to be exploited by a commercial fishing industry... The natives should be using box trap nets, instead of gill nets and thereby reducing the by-catch to zero..! Check out (internet) the Michigan MNR arrangements with the native population... (only trap nets allowed)... and they are doing great... I applaud the MNR for deciding to be more open to the public through press releases and their hard efforts recently, (last summer with an advisory committee on Lake NIpissing walleye and currently another advisory committee dealing with a 20 year plan (including all fish species) for Lake Nipissing). the cap't p.s.f thanks T.J.
  18. Actually many of our guests have had not trouble catching walleyes during the last 3 years! Most of the complaints have been that the fish are all in the "slot" and have to be released. My believe is that fish are best fresh. If you and your buddy catch 2 walleyes each that is 4 fish to fry up... (8 filets)... that should fill your bellies, even if you are as big as Chris Christy. If we had all practiced responsible fishing in the past there would be no problem today! I suspect that most fish that are taken home to the "freezers" often are forgotten in the thrown out.. Anyway if you do fry up the fish after too long a time the taste is just not there.. If you like fresh fish .. go to the market, it is cheaper... But if you like a few days in the wilderness (away from the noise. heat and pollution of the cities).. breathing in fresh air, looking at wild animals, sparkling blue waters and quiet. If you enjoy perhaps cooking fish over an open fire on the shore some deserted island... then come north...! if you idea of a fishing adventure is based only on the number on just one species of fish you can catch (while ignoring all the other fish species that are just as tasty) - interested only some type of competitive count? If you have no respect for where you are and are blind to the nature around you... if you are what we call "meat eaters"... referring to those whose idea of the successful fishing trip only about the daily bragging ... Then do us all a favour and stay home...! the cap't...
  19. " First Nations should set their own management numbers to meet their needs, said Nipissing First Nation resident Fred Bellefeuille, a lawyer who has been involved with treaty claims and speaks on aboriginal self government. The Robinson-Huron Treaty signed in 1850 guarantees that if the walleye catch must be reduced, then the needs of the First Nation fishery supercede sport fishing and should only be shut down as a last resort for conservation purposes" Er.. excuse me BUT in the year 1850 the yellow walleye did NOT exist in Lake NIpissing! They were introduced in the 1920s through a massive stocking effort by the MNR. Mr. Bellefeuiille should get his facts straight...! Peace and Love... the Cap't...
  20. No idea ... why the ice thickened on each side of the crack... some interesting physics going on there? Location was some 6 hours north of Winnipeg on a large lake.
