  1. I'm pretty sure with this brutal cold weather, the ice is at least a foot thick by now
  2. On the way home from work today, on the QEW near Trafalgar, I saw a micro truck, the type you might see in the Carribean, pretty sure it had Ontario plates, couldn't see what manufacturer was, it had a small, 2 person cab and a flat bed (not a box), it was white anyone know what I saw? I'd be interested in researching them if they are sold in Canada
  3. I read that story in the Star a couple days ago, if that's the way it actually happened, I don't understand what the 2 adults were thinking, I was pretty disturbed by the story, the kid has pretty serious injuries from th fall
  4. I hate when drunk birds drop dead into my hot tub, I also hate when the neighbors light fireworks and the sky rains dead birds if the media and scientists claimed it was a strange bird virus, I'd believe it, this crap is just an insult to our intelligence
  5. 5 or 6 years ago, my party went to Ramsey Lake, a lodge just a short portage on the south end of Bisco we had fly in fishing quality for walleye, check it out http://www.rayscamps.com/
  6. never been there and haven't heard much about it, but here's a link to a contour map for the lake http://www.adventurefishingmaps.on.ca/no1.htm
  7. Our group went to Grey Owl last year. The camp and owners were great, we thought the fishing was ok but not great. Averaged about 6 walleyes per day, per guy. Maybe we are spoiled. It's a big lake and I didn't feel that I figured it out (how to catch fish). Pike were hard to target and mostly caught them while jigging for walleyes. I did have a decent pike grab my walleye on the way to the boat. If you go, bring gas cans if you can, the price of gas from the camp or Bisco store is steep.
  8. not really relevant, but, last weekend I saw a guy had a portable hut about 20 feet from the open water on Mountain where 12 mile flows in, he could have cast to the open water, I'm sure he checked the ice on his way out, but it looked pretty odd
  9. I kept 3 brown bullheads in my aquarium. They are very tough and tolerant, I just fed them table scraps, I ran a filter and no aerator and they did fine. I released them when they grew too large. Very cool pets. I've tried other species too. I had a tadpole madtom, he was a little more finicky then the bullheads. Pike and musky where difficult to feed unless you had the right sized live bait. One of the most unique guys I had was a green sunfish. Very aggressive and would harm the other fish in the tank. He died, I found him dead, out of the tank, he must have made a jump about 5 times his length to clear the tank.
  10. it's been 15 years or so, but we used to do ok on Kabakwa (we called it Peach Lk), lakers down near the bottom and rainbows just under the ice (I can remember seeing the rainbows cruise by, looking down the hole)
  11. entrapment of poachers is fine with me
  12. Hey, try this, I've been doing it for quite awhile, I actually had it tonight buy a cheap steak, age it let it sit in the fridge until it turns a greenish/ grey and then bar b q sounds kinda gross, but it will be tender and taste like a premium cut, my steak tonight cost $2.50, I've never been ill from doing this, after the steak is cooked it looks great, I just sprinkle with club house Montreal (I don't like the Habs though) steak spice before cooking
  13. it's cottage country, and anyone who explores it knows there isn't any hidden gems, too many people, too much talk, too many 4 wheelers and sleds to keep anything secret
  14. I'm not a marine mechanic, I've been around outboards most of my life though, and I'm not a big fan of the older merc 2 strokes, you don't give us much details though (what year it is, how much use) maybe it's not worth rebuilding
  15. lots of lakes open all year (stocked fish) up there, not many south of Minden and not many that can produce 12 fish up to 3lbs in an day though (I've tried them all)
  16. I was up there last weekend and saw guys out on North Pigeon in Lutterworth, don't know how much ice they had, it's open all year although the fishing is tough, you could also check out Devils, Little Bob and Cedar (Sludge) (rainbows), all are smaller lakes, that should have ice (be careful though) and are open all season let us know how you do
  17. awesome, you're lucky to live up there, alot of us in the GTA are jealous
  18. I was up to Gull Lake, south of Minden on the weekend, Gull is totally frozen over with a few odd looking wet spots, cut a hole and there seems to be around 6 inches of good, clear ice, I was in a back bay though I also cut a hole on Little Gull (smaller lake) which had frozen over alot earlier, the ice was poor and slushy and about 6 inches also about an inch of snow on the lakes, 8 or 10 inches in the bush looks like there will be fishing come Jan 1st
  19. -18 tonight and finally no wind, I'm guessing the big lakes freeze over tonight, I'll be up there Saturday to see what's going on and will report back ps, the Leafs are sucking again
  20. I like my Boy-o-bouy 1 piece, I've had it more than 15 years, it's filthy, a little thin in the knees and elbows, but it still has a few years left no draft up your back with a 1 piece, it's not a fashion show
  21. they look pretty good, if you want to save some $, find some downhill or x-country skis at a garage sale or better yet, at the curb, and make your own with some 2x2's and a rubber maid or two, that looks like a good, ready to go set up though
  22. I think with that kind of thing, you can't expect to get rich, you do it because you enjoy it and like the lifestyle of being involved in the outdoors and being a hut operator
  23. thanks IAC, sounds like more snow is coming today
  24. do your research on-line before you go for prices, I'm always skeptical about all the "great deals" they are offering
