  1. Hi all, I just brought home a nice sized hen caught on my favourite "put and take lake" in the Muskokas. Usually once a year, I always try to bring home one hen from this lake. The ministry stocks the lake every 2 years, and from what we can tell, there is no natural area for them to spawn, so I never feel guilty eating the meat and keeping the roe. This year, I decided to take a stab at preserving the roe. Normally, I just clean the roe well with fresh cold water and vacuum seal it for next spring. It seemed to work okay, but I did notice that the roe would almost freeze and become very opaque after a few drifts, especially in the winter. Once I removed all the loose roe from the skien, I rinsed it in cold ice water. I own a Reverse Osmosis system, so I used this, eliminating any chlorine, etc.. Here is the recipe I used: 1 cup of hot water 1/2 cup of kosher salt 1/2 cup of sugar (apparently steelhead prefer a sweeter scent - so I read!) Mix the ingredients together, and let the solution cool. Pour the solution in a large zip-lock bag and let it sit over night. About 2 hours into the process, I looked at the eggs and I noticed they were become shrivelled up. I thought I had ruined the lot! I read a bit more and it turns out that this process is normal, it is apparently part of the osmosis process. Sure enough the next morning the roe was plump and firm. From there I vacuum sealed the roe in 3 portions for later use. And that it. I found the process very easy and painless. Hope this helps anyone who needs it..
  2. I learned to down rig on Scotty's. A few years later I bought a used set of Big Jons for a great price. 2 years later, I sold the Big Jons. I wished I just waited and bought Scottys.
  3. If that is the same creek that I think it is, try a mepps #1 rainbow. The browns always seem to hit it there!
  4. For a canoe, I'd think I'd prefer one of these: Frabill I also wonder if you could mod it to be a walking staff on the river.....
  5. Check this forum out: http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/index.php Lotsa knowledge there!
  6. Fish anywhere south of Moonstone Road, and you could be in trouble.
  7. Funny, I was there last Thursday and it was low and as clear as gin. I guess that was before the rain though..
  8. Great catches! Man those fish look naughty!
  9. I walked on 3" of black last Christmas Eve. That was in Gilford
  10. If you and your machine are ever in the Barrie area, you would be welcome to use mine.. Super easy to use and it will sync up to 4 carburetors: http://www.carbtune.com/
  11. I am not familiar with the quality of the unit, but Costco is great for returns if you are not happy...
  12. A couple of pictures of the transom and platform may also spark some ideas. There is alot of knowledge on the forum...
  13. How big of a kicker would you be using? If I was trying it out, I'd attach the kicker and then maybe tie the motor off to a cleat for some extra insurance..
  14. I've got a 2004 StarFire and am very happy. I kinda wish my floor was not carpeted though. It seems to take forever to dry. But that's just me being picky!
  15. It appears that it is the "between seasons" time again!
  16. what if you heated up the broken hook enough to melt/pull it out of the lure? Then drill the holes slightly bigger (enough to put a new hook eye through), and after inserting the new hook, seal the entire hole back up with a good glue or epoxy? I also thought of acetone to separate the 2 pieces, but it would likely melt the lure and for sure wreck any of the paint that is on it.
  17. Maybe... They were right in the centre isle, north of the fishing section. There was about 7 boxes or so. 1 was out on display with a yellow tag on it that said who re-conditioned it. Hope that helps..
  18. Just came home from the North end Canadian Tire. They have since put a sign up saying that the augers are reconditioned. The gentleman working in the department did not know if a warranty applied. I am waiting for a phone call back to confirm..
  19. Although I've never met you Cudz, I have to say, I'm glad that you never gave the sport up. I also battle with the obsession to get out when ever I can, and with 2 same girls myself, and a wife that does not understand why I chase green slimy things around the water, I know it can be very demotivating to get out and feel the pressure of "I gotta be home soon, or else"! As the girls get older, I have come to realize that my fishing time will become less, time on the boat with them may be for boating and swimming (with 15 minutes of fishing or so put in the mix), but I have also realized that the fish will always be in the lake, and one day I'll have to beg them to spend some time with me... From your posts, it is very apparent that you understand and love the sport and to drop it completely really would be a shame. So welcome back and I look forward to the posts, (even if they are fewer than before).
  20. Had another great day on Kemp yesterday. No shortage of perch I'd would put a special thanks out there to my 25lb anchor and bimini top though!!
  21. I could not agree more with that. I don't know how many times have have seen more cars in the lot with no trailers attached. I bet if i parked in a standard lot, it wouldn't take long for a ticket to be on my window!
  22. I wish I could contribute some of my own pieces of art, but the odd worm harness just doesn't cut it. Here is a link to another site that has some amazing work: http://www.ohiogamefishing.com/community/showthread.php?t=67416&page=58 Pay special attention to member: "Piatu" His work with using real fish skin is amazing!
  23. Take your time, don't try to break any speed records and most importantly have fun! I envy your opportunity....
  24. Anchor the boat and you should be fine! Wind Link
