Stag & Doe Etiqutte.....totally non fishing...as 100% NF
Burtess replied to Cookslav's topic in General Discussion
All the stag and does that I have been too were far from "cash grabs". Charging $10 to get in and you end up having a nice party and a buffet at 11pm, thats not such a bad deal. My wife and I had a very large stag and doe in the local bar (was one heck of a party!!) and really made very little money from it. The purpose was to have a good time. This is what I have experienced with other stag and does as well. So I see no problem with having one and then having a wedding somewhere else (who really wants to go to the wedding anyway????).... I just bought a plasma from Costco and found their prices to be the same of very slightly lower than FS/BB. You get a second year of warranty for free as well and you have to pay for that at FS/BB. Ours doesn't sell gas, but does sell propane, this is a few bucks cheaper a fill as well compared to Crappy Tire. Burt

School In Class Salmon Hatchery Feb 15/11

I would suggest that you get some test kits for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate and test the water regularly. New filters are void of any nitrifying bacteria, which is not a good thing. The water will quickly build in ammonia, which is very toxic to the fish. This is why many people have large die offs when they start a tank and add fish too quickly (new tank syndrom). If you are not aware of it google "nitrogen cycle" and read up on it. It makes fish keeping so much more pleasant when the nitrogen cycle is understood, better for the fish too lol... Burt -

When you had the large die off did you test your water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate? What were the values? You state that you cleaned the aquarium and started fresh.... did you clean the filters too, did you cycle the aquarium first (either with other fish or by adding liquid ammonia)? Burt -
There is definitely something "odd", this guy has enemies for sure. You can hear them saying "get the ____ out" blah blah blah. If they just wanted to burn the place, then they just would have lite it on fire. These guys were angry at something! But, he should have the rights to defend his property and family. He had better be found not guilty on this one! Burt

I am looking to get a large LCD for the living room. Presently have a 42" LG LCD, this will go to the basement. I want to be as economical as possible but don't want a total piece of junk (difficult sometimes!!). Looking at the Philips 55PFL5505, http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/philips-philips-55-1080p-240hz-lcd-hdtv-55pfl5505-55pfl5505/10145794.aspx?path=43de3d90e91ac3a5726b761a0dc958a9en02, on sale for $1000 (from $1200). Anyone have a Philips LCD, has it been reliable? Any problems? Warranty / service issues? Thanks, Burt

If you can't find those take a look at Schooley's Arctic Blue Ultra-lite rods. I have one in 30" (model 6330). They are green with a orange tip. Sound very similar to the rods you mention. VERY sensitive tips! I got mine last year at BPS. Burt

What's your favorite steak cut?? And doneness?
Burtess replied to Burtess's topic in General Discussion
Be VERY careful with this... Aging a single steak is not recommended, either wet or dry. Generally it is safe to "wet age" a larger cut of beef in cryovac in the fridge, this will tenderize the meat but will not enhance flavour. Dry aging a cut of meat at home is some work... you need to have it out and free to dry, covered in cheese cloth, in the fridge. The cheese cloth should be changed daily and you should use the cut within a week. Before cooking you need to cut off the dried areas. Dry aging will remove moisture from the cut and concentrate flavours. Doing this either way will not result in green meat (???), it will still be red and fresh looking after trimming. Burt -

For those of you that grill your steak "hot and fast" to somewhere in the vicinity of med-rare give this a try.... On thick cuts (ribeyes!!), say around 2", try a "reverse sear". Bank the coals to one side (or for gas grills one side on high, one side on med/low) and lay the room temp steak on the cool side. Cook on the cool side until the steak warms and starts to grey on the outside. This gives time for the enzymes in the steak to "activate" and start tenderizing the meat before they are deactivated by heat. After the steak is fully warmed, transfer to the hot side to carmelize the outer layer for flavour. It is a myth that searing seals in juices, you sear for flavour. This will give you a steak with a very even cook.... med. rare throughout... no grey outsides and blue insides. Give it a shot. Burt -
I have been stewing over what steak I want to grill for New Years Eve. I used to be a sirloin guy because of the fine flavour but I have found that and more in a good ribeye, so I am leaning towards a thick ribeye done med-rare. What is your taste? Burt

The only thing that peeves me off about that ad is they should have used a yappier dog like a shih tzu or a bichon frise...... Burt

Not fishing but for fish....... I already have a custom steel stand that will hold two 180 gallon aquariums, but I need the tanks.... hope I can pick them up over Christmas!! Burt

Just cotton sewing thread..... should have used white though as it was difficult to see the black after they were cooked. You can use tooth picks but with the thread you can seal the ends so that stuff doesn't fall out when cooking. Burt
