  1. abu garcia switched to woven carbon drags in most if not all of their reels a few years ago so smoothdrag's carbontex isn't going be a big change for your reel. If you lost a ton of drag, it's not going to be from getting oil on that type of disc. I would guess you probably put the drag stack together wrong or some other parts between the drag knob and the drag stack were reinstalled wrong. the drag stack has round, eared and keyed washers that need to be in the right order to turn against all drag discs. I will however recommend installing carbontex in your other reels though. a wet carbontex setup is the smoothest drag i know of, you can dial any amount of drag and there won't be the sticky startup that all other drag materials have.

    uh oh

henry and italo got busted and that didn't stop them. Sure it ended their careers in the short term, but all they did was wait for the next generation of fishing show fans to come of age before coming back out. I'll bet most of the people watching them now don't know anything about it.
  3. don't worry about it so much. just fish however you want to fish and deal with wear on parts after they happen. if they wear.
  4. everybody caught something. I didn't have the energy to get out during last week's heat. Forget the rod and reel, all i could reach for was the A/C control.
  5. Yeah, that's how it's done to add multiple map products to all models that don't support more than 1 map file. You can combine everything into one big file and enable/disable whatever you want. There's a hierarchy that determines which map is shown if they are all enabled. If you want to use a map for an area that you've included 3 or 4 products for, and you want to use the map with the lowest hierarchy (for example topo is very low), you must disable everything that's higher level. Another trick that some people do is put individual files on the same memory card (a map file up to 4Gb is supported by some older models with the newer firmware) Store the maps under different names then put the card into a phone to rename them as required. I've heard there's a way to incrementally add to map files by importing your custom map files back into mapsource with maptoolkit but it's not worth my time to learn how to do it when I can just as easily rebuild the whole file from scratch.
  6. I've made the same comparison. I think it was an on an MD-L1011 with a big movie display. I turn on the gps for all flights that let passengers use it and you're right, most cruise 5xx-550mph, and there were a few around 600mph. You can see my max is 604mph, i tell dumb people i did it in a car, and some believe it because you can't inject the numbers into those fields.
  7. interesting. you actually broke the bail wire itself or one of the end connectors or what? I've had problems with Quantum's antireverse also and have read many posts from others with similar problems. It makes me think something is up with their design.
  8. pretty sure the limits are set by the cfia (food inspection) and enforced cbsa (border services). The airports have a booklet on what you can bring and the limits. meat is 20kg/person. that i know for certain because i return from vacation with that limit it every summer.
  9. catch 'em bait and tackle down in the south end of kitchener has them. you can buy just one or a handful, they're not pre-packaged. I haven't been in there since they resized the store but I doubt they would change their inventory too much. you should call first to be sure.
  10. well, the fly you show up close has a real jc nail. It would cost quite a bit to make all those at today's prices if other flies use similar quality materials.
  11. funny. just a little more an he would have been good to go. heh. ..the tide comes in fast when you're not paying attention.
  12. yes. from shore, walleye fishing is tough. There are a few spots that i know of but the only way you can get anything of size is from a boat, nighthawk lake, grassy point good to me consistently producing 5-6 pound fish. For shore fishing, you can stop on the way in at the frederick house bridge. Check out barber's bay, anywhere along the road there, you'll probably see people fishing. And there's a drive-on dock in connaught just before that (or on the way out depending on which way you're going). I've seen a lot of fish caught off that dock. If you want some cool backroad fishing (old logging road), find your way to Springs road and drive around looking for streams. most hold small brookies.
  13. without a doubt, the relationship we have with the insurance companies is the definition of a rainy day friend.
  14. I go past it every day although I haven't been in since he moved to the bigger shop. There's a sign outside about a sale and the trout opener. I should have gone in there when he was moving and had that 40% sale to clear out stuff rather than move it but i slept through that too. as far as the store by the beer store, I was in there for the first time in about a year and i saw a reel in there that was clearly used. It was not priced so i asked how much and how old/used it is. The guy said it wasn't used. It has some telltale signs that it was used quite a bit, there were no scratches or damage but lots of other things that could only happen after being used for some time. If you want know which reel it is, PM me, then go in and see for yourself.
  15. ARe diameters the same? It's so hard to compare because diameters are rarely the same even within one company and their comparable products that I rarely pay attention to numbers unless it looks way off what i'm used to. It's possible that your #105 pink is #110 clear, but then maybe they thin out the clear product so you're still getting #105? I don't know, I've never really paid attention. I have one pink FC that's so darn opaque that i'm surprised it was sold as FC. It's as solid pink as you can imagine, like casting a wire with glowing pink plastic insulation, that's what the line looks like. I'll get a picture if i have time later. I like the line's strength, abrasion resistance and knot strength so i don't mind, but i would never use this for a leader material, i actually tie on a clear leader tip for this because the coloring is so solid.
  16. I might be able to help with a blank for later builds although i don't know how much it would cost to ship within Ontario. I have a few dozen blanks here now, some i doubt will be built because a year only has 365 days. I brought back most of these in my rod case when i come back from vacations to get around the shipping fees. MLJ is right about shipping blanks from the US by courier. being hit by extra charges at the door is not a sure thing but don't be surprised if you get nailed pretty good for longer blanks.
  17. how many guides are on the rod now and how long is the rod? The problem with just swapping out guides with micros is too much line rub. If it's a higher quality rod with more guides, you might be able to get away with it but it's not going to be optimal. If you look at some of the factory micro rods on the market, you'll see that the guides are quite close together and likely a few more guides than a typical rod. and now for the workaround to make it okay. rewrap it into a spiral wrap with a bumper guide. hehe. no line scrub and it keeps the guides in the same locations. still not optimal as far as loading the blank but you will get to try out micros and a spiral. btw. I also say no to powerpro for wrapping. First, I'm not sure the rod finish will be able to penetrate the fibers for a solid hold on the guide. Micro feet are very short to begin with. Second, power pro is covered in that wax so the finish i doubt the finish will stick to it. You're from KW, i think. go down to Natural and grab a spool of proper thread. BTW, sewing thread has silicone lube that will fish-eye the rod finish unless you use "color preserver" so that's out too. whose micro guides are you going with?
  18. Daiwa Interline rods. They still make them. There are 2 other manufacturers of that design that i've seen. One makes super heavy saltwater rods that resemble a compound bow with a solid back half and a flexible limb tube on the front half. I forget the other brand, it's not one of the well known companies. Syn...they come with a looped cable.
  19. I built a micro spinning rod for a friend last year and he didn't let go of it for the last month of vacation. I wasn't so sure it would be a good idea with a spinning reel and sic guides going from 25 down to 3 micros and a fuji titanium concept tip, guides were set up as new concept. I've got casting rods and i thought they were great. I was skeptical at first also. Without the bigger/heavier guides on the light ends, you can feel the responsiveness of the blank alone. It's almost like the difference between casting a high graphite rod and a fiberglass composite rod like an ugly stick. At the end of the cast, the rod tip will continue whipping down on the heavy composite rod. you don't get so much on a decent blank, and you get even less with micros on the same blank. the only real drawback are for people who cast knots. I don't think it's a gimmick. this one is here to stay just as concept did, which was a similar departure from the rods before them with high legged spinning and casting guides all the way to the tip. Any spinning or casting rod today that starts with double foot and goes down to single foot fly guides to the tip can thank fuji concept for that.
  20. Most dealers will offer to take your old as a trade-in when you repower. Even some manufacturers have nice trade in deals to keep you brand loyal if you're going to buy new. It all depends on how much time you want to put into selling it yourself and how quickly you think it will sell. Sometimes it's not worth the trouble for a few extra bucks when you consider the time it will take. My friend recently repowered her sailboat and donated the yanmar to a small radio station where it'll be used as the backup diesel generator. It was old but immaculate. She just wanted to go faster...I think the whole concept of sailing eludes her.
  21. cabelas uses both courier and USPS so it depends. send an email to customer service, they'll get back to you in a day.
  22. Or even better, set it up a cheap proxy server on a P2 here then you can surf/connect anywhere that filters out non-canadian IP ranges. and no hop lags
  23. If it were me, i would roll it all into 1 trip with the honeymoon and go a holiday spot that has great fishing like australia, hawaii, alaska, south america, somewhere in the gulf. with a fiance who likes fishing i'm sure a few members are also wondering if she has any sisters
  24. Yep. that's the reason it moved out of Direct Energy. The move made no financial sense for the city since it got $750K to host the event plus any other revenues it brought from the food vendors, parking, etc. I'm glad it went closer to town rather than to some remote location on the outskirts like the fishing show.
