Reef Runner

Last year the carp die off never reached Canal Lake, well at least in the magnitude as on other Kawartha Lakes, I can assure all. I believe I only saw one floating carp all last season. There were more dead crappies/sunfish than anything else washing up late spring last year however. My garden is looking real good as a result and I've been having no problem in catching them this year. No significant die-off of any species there yet, however, usually this time of year we see the carp playin on the surface and in the shallows. I havent seen any this year so far reefrunner

Marc really, really need to start wearin some shorts? The kilt doesn't allow him to tan those gams. lol. Fishin with those guys, Roy, you might need a jock for yourself. Goodluck to you if ya get out them, sounds like blast!

Yeah he was "hooked"! Following Monday around 2pm he sends me a text "I'd rather be fishing". Told me the past two days were a right off since all he was doin was day dreaming of getting out again. My reply? "WELCOME TO MY WORLD"

Palomar all the way. Was the first knot my Dad taught me, used it for years even before I knew what it was called. Learn the palomar, uni and uni-to-uni and your pretty much covered your fishing needs. I don't have any pics though, sorry.

Storm chug bug is my fave. You can use a topwater in deeper water to. Just make BIG noise on the surface and pause. In deeper parts, concentrate over humps, saddles and vegetation.

Good day all, Well now that my exam is out of the way and I find myself in the midst of summer, it's time to shed my Monday through Friday persona and get up to the cottage or other locale every weekend to do what I love... This weekend had some interesting challenges: Teach an absolute newbie, my friend who's never held a rod in his life, the pleasures of our pastime; battle the changing weather fronts; test out some of Ryan Landry's black lures; and get some inches for team 9. Introducing the newest predator on the water As you can see, I set him up with my 7foot MH paired with a Shimano Sedona 5000RB, 20# PP in moss green, leader for those pesky Northerns and a bright orange Cyclops so he can practice casting and see the action of the lure. I told him he was gonna be casting from Saturday to Sunday non-stop, so he took to it whole heartedly. As you can see the weather held up for us. Within the first 15minutes he gets his first fish ever:clapping: It was dinky OOS smallmouth, a pound and a half at best. No pic, sorry guys, it started bleeding and was released right away to grow up. I got 5 pike and and OOS largie that afternoon before we got pushed off the water by an electrical storm. This snot rocket got mauled by something bigger (NUDITY) The release That something bigger was, I beleive, the nice 40inch Tiger musky I hooked two casts later on an orange 1/2oz spinner. Fought it for about 40 seconds when it bulldoged underneath the boat, turned and got off Sorry team, no inches this trip. Would've been my first 'ski this season, but even more so, I would've loved to get her in for a pic. I can tell you she was a Beaut, that tiger pattern is something else. I tested out some of Ryan Landry's black lures. Perhaps it's was because there was a leader tied on, or not, I found the action of these lures to be Anyhow, free lures, I can't complain. Out of what I could try, on a shallow very weedy lake, I liked the topwater popper at night Although they didn't catch any fish, I'll give them another test run when I get to a more suitable lake. The strom passed late evening so we went out for a night fish. After a couple hours topwatering, jiging with white twistertails and tosing jointed rapalas, with no results we headed back in to get up bright and early for Sunday. Sunday started off at 10am, it was bright out. lol. My buddy, casting a white spinnerbait, yells "fish on". Two jumps and a WICKED fight got this respectable OOS LMB in the boat. Went back to that tiger ski's address and knocked on her door a bunch of time with different baits, to no avail. I left her my card and call back info. That day was a tough fish, on and off rain. But we couldn't leave before buddy hooked into a Northern. Just before packing it in around 3pm he gets this hammerhandle Hope you all enjoyed the report and fish porn. I learned the 5 fillet method years ago from a lodge owner out of Kipawa, Quebec. JWL has a nice pic of it. Another tip: The "pike" taste of the flesh is the result of toxins released into meat during periods high stress. If your gonna keep a fish, knock it out and immediately sever the nerve endings coming from the brain to the body. The incision should enter from the base of the gill plates to the top of the back of the head. Don't believe me, try it yourself. Betcha the pike culled by the above-method will taste better than the one hanging off the stringer all day. Bon appetite, reefrunner

Thanks and a great remedy without resorting to drilling a bunch of holes. Was wondering if that'll be strong enough, but judging from your post, it shall be strong enough indeed!

Don't know if permanent marker will wash off mono, but my suggestion would be marking a single mark at 10 feet, 2 marks at twenty and soo on.

Nicely done richyb! I was out there this weekend as well, didn't notice you out on the water. I had a similar weekend, with a nice tiger musky lost at the boat I got her address, next time I'll go knock on her door again. Yesterday was a tough fish though. Only one sunfish and your average LMB in 5 hours. Filleting a pike boneless 5 fillets from one fish. -1)and 2) on each side from tail to just before the back bottom fin -3)and 4) on each side gill to just before back bottom fin (carefully along the rib cage) -5) along the back reefrunner
