  1. And people you need to remember poaching not as important as habitat destruction despite what you may think. Some one poaches new fish will eventually replace the old. Destroy the habitat = No fish EVER!!!!!
  2. Heres my favurite bass picture its my son with his first river small mouth wet wading. The fish isnt huge but he was just a little guy about his 5th year. When I look at it it still fills me with pride. He caught it all by himself cast his own rod out reeled it in and liped it. It started of a great partnership of fishing expeditions.
  3. My whitefish recipe its very simple but incredibly tasty. Whitefish fillets Dijon mustard cashews lemon zest salt pepper In a food processer or just manually with a rolling pin crush and pulverise the cashews till they are the consistancy of bread crumbs. Season your fillets with salt and pepper liberally brush the mustard on all surfaces of the fish spread the crushed cashews out on a plate and flip the whitefish a few times till cashew are encrusted into the mustard. Place the fillets in a buttered baking dish Bake at 400 degrees for 20 minutes or until filets flake easily with a fork. As soon as fish is removed from oven zest with lemons. Done!!! If you have a food processer this is a very quick and delicious recipe.(Manually crushing cashew can take a while) Great with twice cooked fries.
  4. 4 large onions chopped fresh rosemary moose 1 bottle of guiness handful of garlic cloves olive oil salt and pepper Put chopped up onions and rosemary in large roasting pan. Then take a knife (no not that, the serial killer knife) and stab your roast in a variety of places . Insert a whole peeled garlic clove into the holes youve made. Salt and pepper on the moose. In a large hot frying pan avec olive oil sear the outside of the roast till brown. Put the roast in the large roasting pan on top of the onions. Add the bottle of guiness. Cover and put in the oven at 350 for 90 minutes.
  5. If the fish dies you still have to let it go. I've asked the CO's before because its happened to me with a sub legal musky and with a trophy Lake Trout I got through the ice on Simcoe fishing for perch in December. The reasoning is that those less scrupulous individuals would always make this claim in order to keep a fish.
  6. Ling are very tasty. Back when we had real winters we use to catch quite a few while fishing whitefish on Colpoys bay. None ever went to waste.
  7. Incredible important tool for steelheading is a thermometer. When the water is cold fish mid to tailout but if the temp of the water climbs even a little fish the whole pool even run water. Ive had days in december that water was 33 degrees first thing and temps climbed a degree and half and boom lots of fish.
  8. Wow obviously you dont and I think now I see why?
  9. Also notoced your location. If the golden triangle steelheaders are still arounds its a great group for a beginner to join
  10. Since no one has mentioned it yet. Chum and single eggs. Really helps to produce in tough conditions. Also stay away from smaller tribs. Fish the big rivers. Small tribs are only good on the drop after a freshet. Big rivers hold their water and colour longer and always seem to be bring fresh bows in. In my opinion there are only 2 rivers that almost always have fish. The Not and the Grand. Third choice would be the 'geen. Learn one of those rivers and you wont be dissapointed.
  11. Every Hatchery raised steelhead should be tagged and with a gross seasonal tag for hatchery raised fish similar to atlantic salmon . Tags should be individually priced say 2 or 5 bucks each to recoup some of the hatchery cost. And you can buy as many as you want up to say 10 or 15 a season. No one needs more steelehead than that. That way you when you catch a clearly tagged hatchery fish you affix a trout tag to it. And you can take home hatchery fish. Naturally produced fish are protected in this way while maintaining angler harvest opportunity.
  12. This is the case for a lot of people. I am sure most are nice, smart, polite individuals. They wouldnt think twice of butting in front of you in a movie line up or a ckeckout at a supermarket but give them the anonymity of being in a car and they all get a sense of rudeness and entitlement. I'm a limo driver and if there is one thing that has taught me its be polite while driving let people out into traffic particularly when its all stalled and your not moving fast. Its all about karma be nice to others and it will come bck to you
  13. Have you ever read the book Trap Lines North a true "diary" of 18 and 16 year old brothers trapping near Nakina in the 30's and absolutely riviting snapshot of Canadiana. http://traplinesnorth.tripod.com/
  14. buy 2 16 foot boats and secure one to each side of your 12 footer as an outrigger. Seriosly add a seat with a small pedestal it will help
  15. I use to miss so many classes at Guelph when I would get the call from a landowner up there that the river would be on the next day. It can produce absolutely stupid amounts of fish. Nice to see you could get into them.
  16. With the 6 foot rod you might be better off utilizing other techniques than floatfishing. Try spinners and wobbling plugs on fresh fish. Keep at it and pick one river to learn to start with.
  17. I noticed the girlfriend kissing the fish... whats that? best choice in the boat?? LOL thanks for the report I enjoyed it.
  18. Kill two birds with one stone get married on Valentines Day, you'll never forget your anniversary, Its not an opener in any way, its a day that you have to spend with her anyway.
  19. I dont know the name of the show caught it a couple of times on CBC News channel. Its a BBC production and its flyfishing oriented. It was a pretty cool couple of shows that I saw. One was trying to find trout in the Thames watershed and another was flyfishing for trout in Burma and India.
  20. "Turn off a light save a brook trout" early nipigon conservation tshirt
  21. Heres a photo of my rig its a custom loomis 11 1/2 ft. Its done with the guides starting on top and then twisting to the bottom of the rod. With the baitcasting reel I took the anti backlash magnets out and the drift is very smooth almost as good as a centerpin. What I miss in drift I more than make up in casting and fish control. Excuse the quality of the photo its a scan left the steelhead crowd behind 15 yrs ago to start musky fishing so its an old photo although the equipment still gathers dust in my storage locker.
  22. Jedi Windsors alright I lived there through university. Its a bit dirty but its like most Canadian cities. Having Detroit right across the river is excellent. Oh an lets not forget the ballet!! Caught some bass right at the school in my first couple weeks there then I got sidetracked from fishing see previous sentence.
  23. The Notty beat me up for a while too but I concentrated on learning it and it was well worth it. Always has fish. Maitland depends a lot on water levels. Caledonia is an excellent place to start on the Grand.
