The bass club I used to fish with held open tournaments in late December, I know people here that catch largemouth while ice fishing. Picture casting blade baits in December and winning a bass tournament? They were active enough to chase them, or reaction strikes? Ice limits boat usage, snow can too! Ramps aren't a top priority for snow removal here in December.

Like you say, nothing fancy, but all seem usable to fish out of. A 9.9 isn't going to make any of them a speed boat, but should get you around OK.

It can be tough to find good ones even here in the states with a bigger market, some of the people making them really cheap out on the hook quality. We used to do a September trip every year, try the channel between Payne's and Brignall's, no numbers, but some biggies.

It is hard to find large minnows in this area unless you happen to be near one of the lakes that has a population of big catfish or muskie. I used to fish at times for large minnows for bait, a tiny piece of worm or maggot on a size 10-12 hook with the barb flattened down, surprising how many of them can shake themselves free. Some lake and ponds here have golden shiners in them 10-12 inches long, bigger than I cared to use, but a 6-8 was fine for bass here. Easy to damage a baitfish removing a barbed hook.

57 is easily within their comfort range, find baitfish? feeding areas? A jig and twister tail? tip it with a piece of crawler or gulp? Swim it slow, cover water?

I do agree on the trebles, when fishing bass tournaments I tried to avoid them if I could.

The idea of a barb is to help keep a fish from throwing the hook, if you're not concerned with landing it why not? Of course flattening the barbs will help reduce injury, cutting the hooks off a lure will reduce it a lot more!

My dad was there once, like 50 years ago and in the spring. Not sure I would focus on 30-40 feet of water, it's October and the water is cooling, I would probably start a lot shallower 6-10 feet.

I believe the water that comes out of the tattle tale is actually part of the water used to cool the engine.
