You do suffer from a population problem, but an increased population causes other problems? and probably more taxes?

Limits on pan fish and limiting out
OhioFisherman replied to Acountdeleted's topic in General Discussion
We used to watch the commercial fishermen on the bays off of Lake Erie hauling in their trap nets they used for catching carp and buffalo, those nets were huge too, so was their catch! I recently watched a video of some carp netters on Lake Simcoe, all they got was 150 pounds or so. LOL, that's like 6 average carp here in places. -

When I was young it used to be legal to use perch for bait at Pointe Au Baril. There was a old guy that lived there that we used to see trolling all the time for pike and skis? LOL, I still remember his comment! " the bigger the perch? the bigger the pike! -
Ohio is roughly 1/9 the size of Ontario with 11 million people, and there still are Bobcat sightings. With all the woods you folks still have there has to still be cats roaming about.

How do you hook minnows for drop shot.
OhioFisherman replied to Tjames09's topic in General Discussion
" drop shot dead stick " Not sure what that means? Never used live bait on a regular drop shot rig though. Circle hooks sold in my area are usually used by people fishing for bigger catfish, and most of those hooks seem like they are made with some pretty heavy wire that are intended for bigger bait and fish? -
LOL, all that rowing is tough work!

http://www.walleyecentral.com/articles/?a=1370 http://www.cleveland.com/outdoors/index.ssf/2013/03/lake_eries_walleye_yellow_perc.html Bits and pieces on the Lake Erie fish population, I have caught steelhead with perch in their bellies, but they were far out numbered by emerald shiners and shad. -
Limits on pan fish and limiting out

My dad was a child of the great depression years, he had 6 brothers and 7 sisters and his father died when he was 13, so him and a few other siblings had to quit school and help support the family. In that era it was hard enough for an adult to find a job, let alone a kid of school age? He grew up a couple of miles away from Lake Erie and catching fish was a large part of him helping to provide food for the family, that seemed to stick with him all his life. I have 3 brothers, the year of our 5 birthday it was the ritual for us to go spring crappie fishing with dad, or first over nighter fishing with dad. None of us ever made it two days, we ran out of room to store fish. 5 - 5 gallon buckets, buckets and coolers full of crappie on ice. For a 3-4 week span in the spring dad and anyone and everyone he had taken fishing to his spots seem to be there at least one day on the weekends. Ohio had no limits at the time, but the size of a " keeper " seemed to get smaller as the years went by. We didn't have limits or regulation on walleye fishing either, I had to go to Ontario to catch my first walleye because they were few and far between here in the late 50's and 60's. I remember seeing lots of people with stringers full of smallish bass before Ohio started closed seasons and possession limits, bass fishing here has gotten better since. Personally? I never really had the incentive to keep many fish, for me it wasn't the reason I enjoyed fishing. -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Hazel Thanks, I was very young and don't recall hearing about it, Toronto and Ontario in general seem pretty far north and inland to be affected so badly.

Any fans of light musky rods and lures?
OhioFisherman replied to Weeds's topic in General Discussion
Thoughts? Not a muskie fisherman, although I have fished for them and it didn't go well. They will hit small baits, but most smaller baits, unless made for hard fighting fish have smaller, weaker hooks? Putting out sized hooks on smaller baits can kill the intended action of them? A bigger bait might discourage some smaller fish, especially those you aren't targeting to keep from hitting it? A smaller bait doesn't seem to do that? All of my reels would have probably handled a moderate sized muskie fairly well, maybe not on a daily basis fishing with muskie sized lures for long. The rods were open water muskie rods, hope you don't have to try to turn them or stop them? Our bass club used to fish a few lakes that had muskie in them, them hitting lures meant for bass was a problem, we didn't gear up for bass fishing with muskie tackle. If you are using a heavy enough rod, reel, line, leader? Lure size is debatable? I personally have hooked 40+ inch skis on a 5/8 jig and pig and a 1/8 ounce spinnerbait, needless to say I wasn't equipped properly, and had 0 luck with it! -

Beautiful animals! and following the nice rack story? http://www.tennessean.com/story/sports/2016/11/15/world-record-deer-antlers-worth-100000/93920776/

I can understand that given it's history, it was the weapon of the British Empire for a long time.

http://www.atlanticwallblanks.com/303-BRIT-FULL-LENGTH-BLANK_p_28.html .303 blanks, cartridge is lipped like a .22. No idea on hiding them in a wall, as long as they aren't in a humid area corrosion would be low and slow? I had a VFW across the street from me growing up, they were always giving 21 gun salutes. Blanks for an M - 1 Garand and British Enfield rifles were probably a lot more common years ago? Base of the pistol cartridge may have a caliber on it? No idea on the cost of having a gun shop disable cartridges.

So, what toys are on the wishlist for 2017?
OhioFisherman replied to Shloim's topic in General Discussion
I may have to pick up some new batteries for my wheelchair and scooter! -
I had a 17 foot Smokercraft Pro Angler, an older boat and only 73 inches wide, also under powered, a package boat with a 35hp motor, but rated for a 60hp motor. A lot of lake here are electric motor only, and most inland lakes here aren't huge. It came with a 35# thrust Minnkota, which was adequate unless there was wind. I changed to a 55# thrust 12 volt Motorguide when the Minnkota wore out. Under powered, 2 batteries, I always had a spare trolling motor battery, I moved mine to the rear, a livewell up front full of water and fish and 2 batteries made is slow to plane, not that I was going to go anywhere in a hurry anyway! A high sided aluminum boat is going to catch more wind, I probably should have gone with at least a 70# 24 volt system. A battery usually lasted me most of the day, and I had mine set up with Anderson quick connects, so I could just unplug one and plug in the spare.

LOL! The farmer behind me used to lease land to farm all around my area, one spot was right across the road. I could get up in the morning and see 20 - 30 deer grazing in the field after the harvest, sometimes they appeared again towards evening, homes there now and the deer scattered.

Great pics! looks like a quieter group than my former in laws!

Sorry for your loss.

I don't know how much weight difference there was between the 4 and 6 cylinder models, or how they compensated for it? Front brakes provide most of your stopping power, putting more than the recommended weight on the rear by towing could detract from that. http://knowhow.napaonline.com/front-brakes-vs-rear-brakes-whats-the-difference/

LOL Dave, fish with it, sell it, collect reels, or give it to the wife - girlfriend instead of a small appliance for Christmas? That could earn you more fishing time? Alone? Retrieve was like 4:75 to 1? Slow by today's standards? Probably wouldn't hold up using braided lines of today and not a good reel for species like Salmon or big Trout that make long fast runs? They handle light mono line better than the Abu reels of their day, 10# test would get between the spool and the frame on Abu casting reels, never had that happen with a Shimano baitcaster. On Lake Erie fishing for Smallies or Walleye with lots of open water to play fish you didn't need more than 10# test. My Abu 5001 lefties were slow retrieve, unlike other Abu reels of the day, righties, I never saw high speed gears available for them, Smallies on Erie could outrun them coming up. Mine cast well, a small light reel and comfortable to use all day, LOL what can you get these days for 60 - 70bucks? Shimano made a Curado for a time with a 3.8 to 1 retrieve? a crankbait reel? Slow rolling spinnerbaits? That reel isn't much faster?
