  1. Well cooler water holds more dissolved oxygen than warmer water. http://omp.gso.uri.edu/ompweb/doee/science/physical/choxy1.htm Consistent higher water levels open more feeding areas to fish, probably more spawning areas too? A lot of the walleye charter captains on this side of Lake Erie move from the shallower western basin to the central or eastern basin to follow the walleye migration as the water temps heat up, deeper water.
  2. Those were big in this area too, not surprising though, the company that made them was in Oberlin Ohio, around 20 miles from here.
  3. LOL, memories, when I was young dad had me and my brothers at a local park collecting nightcrawlers before our Canadian vacations.
  4. I have no idea of what is around your area, some metal reclaiming sites and junk yards here have all different types of " scrap " metal they will sell at not much over scrap prices, one man's trash is an other's treasure? I am not sure what type of wood utility poles are made of, or if it is treated wood, but our local power company had damaged ones they would give away, that could be an option?
  5. I have heard of them, but never used them, 12 bucks a dozen is a lot more than " golden shiners " cost here!
  6. " It was the least i could do for the poor thing...i thought it would bring some better karma...although we did catch and some of the locals got skunked during the basscat tourney so i guess it did? But where the heck was the size!!! " Nice job though, why let an animal suffer? even if it isn't a popular animal? You guys went there, an unknown big body of water, with severe time constraints, pretty hard to expect fantastic results? Even Kevin Van Damn doesn't win every tournament? 25 years of going to PAB for me and the results could vary widely! but it was always fun! LOL and not so far of a drive!
  7. Great pictures and report! LOL Even Cormorants need a rescue ranger!
  8. It's another good looking Canadian lake, just from the boat tour video I see spots I would be trying for bass.
  9. These? http://www.scheels.com/shop/scheels-catalog/Johnsonquot-Rattlin39-Beetle-Spinreg-D-8950-1285601-PCB
  10. With all the water in that area there has to be some 8+ pound bass!
  11. Dang! way to go flipper! That's a fat fish!
  12. I used to wander around at night fishing some ponds and small lakes from shore, I used a back pack for that. Carrying a couple of rods and a flashlight to see my way around dangers left a shortage of hands to carry stuff.
  13. I don't have a problem believing a 23.5 inch L/M could be around 7.5 pounds.
  14. I'm in Ohio, and obviously our laws are different, here the local TSC store sells bass and other species in the spring for pond stocking, so you can transport them here, a receipt can solve ugly questions on possession of under sized fish?
  15. If you're going to upgrade your horsepower? Make it a one time deal and get the 40.
  16. I also used the quick connectors like Drifter mentioned, for a lot of years and never a problem with them.
  17. Old, let me help you fish! http://games.aarp.org/games/sport-fishing/ No rain and easy on the legs!
  18. That incident took place in Florida? I can't even imagine someone doing that along our lake front here, they might not survive the encounter.
  19. I am disabled now and rarely make it out of the house, but for around 30 years I fished bass tournaments and took fishing vacations, dates were planned months or the prior year in advance, I took whatever weather I got. Even fun fishing, I had some very good days fishing in the rain hoping for dryer weather next time. I would rather have rain than get blown off a lake by wind.
  20. Any idea on what the deepest water in that place is? It looks good, but without some deeper water it can be hard to maintain fish populations? It's always fun to catch bass on surface lures, but sometimes it's not the best way, I would probably mix in a texas rigged worm or lizard, in areas with less weeds you can even rig one on a mushroom or bullethead jig and slowly swim it. Spinnerbaits, rattletrap style lures, even shallow to mid running crank baits, search baits, they allow you to cover large areas quickly and locate the fish? LOL maybe?
  21. 1:30 pm, and it is as dark as 9pm, lighting thunder and the monsoon is hitting! My youngest daughter went to Ohio State's agricultural college branch in Wooster Ohio. She posted some pictures of some of her friends family farms farther south of here, some of their corn is as tall as they are, so not all areas here are getting hit as badly.
  22. If I was going smallie fishing I would have some tubes with me, by altering the weight you use you can fish them shallow or deep, and you control their action, fast or slow, a versatile bait. We used them spring (pre spawn cold water) here and summer and fall. A darker color for a crawfish look and a light color for a baitfish look. What the others have mentioned will work, some times it can be as simple as a jig and grub.
  23. We had another storm blow thru the area early Friday morning ( before dawn ), the weekend wasn't too bad. Monday - Thursday? scattered thunderstorms predicted. My son got the flat on the tractor cart fixed anticipating it drying out and having to water trees, he might make it all summer without a prolonged dry spell?
  24. No clue Brian, but if you get one of those huge smallies? get a picture!
