Always carry insurance on your boat in the winter! It`s probably been about 25 years ago, the marina one of my buddies was at is in a river valley. The ice builds up by the highway bridges over the river and forms a dam backing up water and more ice. They had a quick thaw that year and it all came down at once, it took the boats stored in bunks on shore and washed most of them to the river mouth were they hit the steel breakwall and sunk. My buddy lost a 30 foot searay he bought the summer before. He was one of the lucky ones though, he kept insurance on his boat all year, a lot of the people didn`t they lost like 60 boats and only about half were insured.

I applied to be one down here in like 1976, the city I was living in had an add in the paper. I made the application and received a card in the mail to take a civil service test for the job. That was as far as I got in the process, I had already found another job driving a truck, it paid better, I didn`t have to go to Cleveland for training, a plus, and I didn`t have to jump out of an 80 foot tower into a net, also a plus. Down here some cities(smaller) have volunteer firemen, big cities have a regular force, 24 hours on duty at the station and 48 hours off. We used to get a lot of them working part-time on the truck docks on their time off. The pay wasn`t bad, benefits were good, and there is a lot of job security, but dangerous work.

LOL my first trip to Ontario was in a 1953 Pontiac wagon in 1957, the roads are better now. The old pictures are cool but I am glad some things have changed. Fish back then were dead once caught, eaten, mounted, or freezer burnt and buried.

I don`t know the lake or area, just guessing by June the spawn will be over? A Johnson Silver minnow , the biggest one with a pork frog or rubber trailer is a good lure for swimming thru lily pads or over weed beds, Dardevles, Red Eye spoons, bigger hard baits like a 7 inch Rapala, suicks, magnum Rattle Traps, most of the small muskie or larger bass lures might work. A bigger bass jig with a pork O trailer or bigger size pork frog. Bait will work also, just guessing bait stores may be few and far between up there and getting big chubs or suckers might be a problem? A big chub or sucker will work, you can set them up with a quick strike rig, under a slip float, and I have seen guys troll them. A 40+ inch pike has no problem with an 8 inch chub or bigger live bait. Small coves with deeper water on the entrance, or a flat with a deep edge are good spots to try, a weedy point. If it`s your first time there ask the camp owner for some place to try, and cover some water. Baitfish in an area are a good sign.
