Found this site while looking for information on the Moon River area back in 2002-2003? Illness prevented me from making that a realistic destination. I just thought that for the most part the people on the board and the way it was handled were great! Only met a couple in person, but consider a lot of them friends. Most would be welcome at my place.

GWB, it was actually in a drug store advertising flier in the Sunday paper here. I had to look it up, I thought maybe one of our more famous members might have been involved. Cute little Dwarfacus in the picture?

Just thought I would ask?

LOL quadra bog, had a 325hp 396 in a 68 camaro with a 4 barrel quadra jet on it, if the air filter got a little dirty it would bog.

Dara my dad fished there once for a week, like the opening week of walleye season? They got lot of walleyes, but it was back in the 60`s, a lot has probably changed since then. I believe that most were caught using worms.

Don`t quote me on this but I believe the W denotes a winter grade of lubricant. As it get colder oil thickens and doesn`t flow as well until it warms up. The reason for mixed grade oils like 5w30-10w30 in automotive engines, flows like 5 weight, protects like 30? You don`t usually see boat motors operating in the extreme cold like car or truck engines though, and the gear case is usually submerged in water that is at least 32 degrees f or warmer. I would be leery of using something that isn`t manufacturer recommended? It was a fairly common practice at some of the trucking companies I worked at to take a sample of the gear case oil (transmission) and send it to a lab for testing. Unusual amounts of metal particles in the oil could indicate a lubrication problem or abuse. Most of my car engine experience is on small block chevy`s, older one. A the oil pump was driven by the distributor which was gear driven by the camshaft. A slot on the bottom of the distributor fit on the oil pump and drove it. I had always been told that most engine wear occurs on start up, the oil drains into the sump and a brief lag until oil pressure build and it starts flowing. A cold day and thick oil makes it harder to flow. Don`t race a cold engine, let the oil warm up so it can flow well. I have never had a lower unit apart, just my guess that there is no pump, the gears are either submerged in oil or splash lubricated.

Record Setting Day..BASS Video's 130+lbs in 4 days
OhioFisherman replied to MCTFisher9120's topic in General Discussion
They had that on tv here one Saturday, Lake Amistad or something like that in southern Texas. Huge fish. That dude can stay calm catching them, he has caught them before. http://ahps.srh.noaa.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=ewx&gage=amit2&view=1,1,1,1,1,1 -
Just my opinion? Tackle is secondary to finding fish and determining what they will hit. Won a two day tournament in New York casting a crank bait non stop on a shimano medium action spinning rod with a diawa reel and 10# mono. No one else seemed to match the pattern or lure closely enough to do as well. Cranks work, but a time and place for everything, some days they may not be the go to lure. $500 for one combo? over kill unless you get them from a sponsor for free.

Are bluegill/pumpkinseed/sunfish (not bass) tasty?
OhioFisherman replied to Mykester's topic in General Discussion
Yep, great to eat, finding ones of any size can be a problem, they are out there though. I didn`t mess with them unless they were 8 inches or more either. A friend had a pond that they grew big in, 10 inches or more. On light tackle they can be fun to catch. -
Advice needed for crappie fishing
OhioFisherman replied to mr blizzard's topic in General Discussion
I always caught far more Crappie on minnows that worms, and actually more on lures than worms. Just for me worms wouldn`t be a first choice of bait for them. Micro tube will work, a jighead and 2 inch plastic grub, or a roadrunner jig also will work. Also caught them on crank baits and bass style spinner baits. -
Where the heck is that GCD guy from Bama?
OhioFisherman replied to bassman's topic in General Discussion
LMAO a southern boy, probably chasing his cousin? Glen is welcome here anytime! Might even cook him a possum so he feels at home! -
Looking at it as a fiscal conservative that I am? Take the money you were making payments with and save it! That way you have a fund for down payments, either on a boat or new ride. Bought a Chevy 2500 cargo van last July, a 2009, used with 14K miles so save some cash over new. LOL a mobile motel, 10 feet of floor space behind the front seats. Ford`s are for people that can`t spell Chevrolet!

Jann`s Netcraft in Toledo Ohio also sells supplies and has an on-line catalog.

I started fishing bass tournaments in 1974 or so, the focus at that time also wasn`t so much on the gear. Unlimited money and sponsors can do that do that to any game. It helps to know the water you are fishing, also to have a plan for finding them in waters you don`t fish often.

Spinning rod for dropshoting, wacky worm, usually a lighter line on them, smaller hook.Any where around heavy cover I like a flipping stick or a heavier action rod and heavier line, although I used mono, generally 17-20 pound test. Be aware of what rod combo you have in your hand, details count in a tournament, 1 fish, even a minimum size one can move you into money. You can land a 20+ inch bass around cover with a spinning rod and 10# test line, it just wouldn`t be my preferred way of doing it. Pretty sure Harrison will agree, pay attention to your hooks, you can bend or break a low quality hook pulling a bass out of cover. If you want to play with them get them in the livewell first.

Maybe a different Walleye / Pickerel technique to try.
OhioFisherman replied to Harrison's topic in General Discussion
My biggest walleye came casting s 3/8 ounce tandem blade chartruse and blue spinnerbait through the grass on a weedy point on the Georgian Bay. I have also caught them on a jig and pig, jig and worm. If a bass will eat it usually a walleye will too. -
My boat had a fixed pedestal on the drivers seat, the seat lifted off of it. I keep all my documents and out of state, country, fishing licenses in a baggie in the post.

Rattletrap take a look at the ammo prices, a 22 long rifle will work on most small animals, and you won`t put much of a dent in the wallet buying ammo to practice or shoot. Center fire cartridges are much more expensive. Most of your 22 rifles are chambered for 22 longs I wouldn`t mess with shorts, just not as strong. I don`t know what they sell up there, but here you can by 22 subsonics, a much quieter round, not as fast moving though. A 22 rifle can be very accurate in the hands of a good shooter, and they are popular because of their price and the price of ammo for them. I can shoot in my back yard here in the country and have done so, I have railroad tracks that are 4-5 feet higher than the land at the back of my property a back stop. A 22 will go a long way, some caution is needed if you have neighbors behind you. a rough idea of ammo prices http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/browse/browse.aspx?c=96 Neighbors here regularly knock off groundhogs with 22`s, lol and my dog brings their dead bodies home, bad dog! leave it in the neighbors yard. Ground hogs and horses don`t mix well, too many chances for broken legs.

Setting up bow mount fishfinder
OhioFisherman replied to rippinlipsfishingteam's topic in General Discussion
I like the bow mount transducer on the motor, the water in some lakes here isn`t to clear though. A lot of times the back of the boat can be in 15-20 feet of water and the bow in a couple of feet. I like to know what is going on in front of me, you can miss washouts and other items with just a transducer in back, nice to see the break lines, depth changes as they happen. In shallow water you may not see the fish on the screen, but you may see why they are there. -
Checking your equipment before you go
OhioFisherman replied to Fisherman's topic in General Discussion
Do yourself a favor, once you get the boat off of the trailer? Check the cross bars for cracks, and broken welds if they are welded. Especially if you have a heavier fiberglass boat with a heavy motor hanging on the back! -
A trailer and hitch place will generally have a much wider range of choices available than an store that sells them as a side line.

LMAO, soft and squishy? a swimming turd? They even have the color? I did a lot of live bait fishing in the past, chubs, shiners, emerald shiners, bluegill, perch. A soft ray fish like a chub or shiner will get you bit a lot faster that a fish with spines in their fins. Some inland lakes down here have already been affected my zebra mussels, probably not a good plan to see gobies spread. They can`t be used for bait here either.

That was our game plan with carp (egg eaters) and sheephead (food competition for smallies) in Lake Erie years ago, no net ,a fish billy and knock them off the hook with extreme prejudice.

Clean, cook, a little mustard? sardines!

Are there any antique lure collectors here?
OhioFisherman replied to LucG's topic in General Discussion
Lures weren`t reel my deal, I was more into reels when I was collecting, and I did some buying and selling on ebay. As I recall you can search for a specific lure and see what comes up in the line of pricing and bids. You usually have to get something pretty unique to get a high dollar for it, a very limited item, or very rare color. Some lures are much more sought after than others of the same time period. I would buy some at garage sales and flea markets, but only items that I knew were under priced. Ebay had a section antique and collectible lures and tackle? And there are various collector sites that may give you an idea of it`s value. Private collectors will try to low ball you to get a deal, ebay is the way to go in my opinion.
