  1. "Wood used in boats-teak very expensive, south american mahogany a little less expensive than teak" Ya but you are going to be hard pressed these days to find a boat with teak or mahogany on it for anything other than trim. They aren`t using it for filler in transoms or for decks on boats, well maybe if the boat has a million dollar price tag. My 75 SeaRay Sundancer had some small pieces of teak trim on it, and I bought a 4x8 sheet of teak faced marine plywood and rebuilt the cockpit seat, it was like $128.00 back in the early 80`s. Glue a couple of pieces of plywood together to get the right thickness, use water proof glue cut it, varnish the heck out of it and you should be good for 10 years.
  2. "being born in a farmhouse near Camden, Ohio makes me a redneck at birth" LOL Connie, they didn`t have hospitals back then? My kids asked me one time when they were you " dad what kind of calculator did you use in school"? I held up two hands, and told them writing on them stone tablets with a hammer and chisel was rough! but it was easier, we didn`t use as many numbers. I cut my own hair for 20 years, waiting on barbers or a "hair stylist" la de da just wasn`t in the plans. Plus a truck driver looking a little rough kept some of the er, morons at a distance. LOL Johnny, not so much the taxes? It`s what they do with them? It seems like every politician out there has his own favorite idea for a new tax, and complains loudly about his cohorts ideas for their new tax.
  3. LMAO, Connie at your age be glad you still have hair to cut! Don`t worry! be happy! Never worried to much about mine, an old hippie, it`s hair! I don`t care! don`t like it? then kiss my hairy ass. LOL if your hair is too short you might become a redneck!
  4. "Smallies are strange creatures, definitely hard to predict what they want, I think that they are opportunistic though." LOL what he said! The first deeper water after a riffle? waiting on lunch? in a bend, current can wash out the bank leaving an overhang, ambush point, cover. Any obstruction, big rock, log in the water, smallies will tolerate more current than L/M but it doesn`t mean they love it. Largemouth can be unpredictable too also, fished a river one day after a heavy rain, like a 6 foot storm sewer draining into the river, water flowing out of it fast enough that you couldn`t have stood with in 10 feet of it, and largemouth all around the darn thing , so much for the current arguement? Food getting washed in?
  5. LOL fish dinner? plenty of perch there! Although I do like to fish shallower water for bass, I did catch large mouth there in 20+ feet of water at times. I really have no idea why, perhaps pushed to deeper water by pike or a ski in their preferred spots? or just the presence of food in deeper water. First time there for me was 1964, never a numbers spot for skis, but some huge ones present. Dad stayed at Pleasant Cove and liked it, er 1962 or so? Try Brignall`s early or late in the day, a good mix of shallow and deeper water and the only route for fish to enter or leave that area of Pointe Au Baril. Boat traffic through there did increase over the years and screwed up the mid day bite. PM me and I can give you some spots to try, but it has been a long time.
  6. An opposing view, you are your best advocate! I have Multiple Sclerosis, some doctors can be arrogant idiots. If you are not comfortable with what your doctors are telling you? ask to see a specialist! After a year and a half into my illness I knew Multiple Sclerosis was the most likely cause, it only took me another year and a half to find a doctor that would listen and order the proper tests to exclude everything else. Look up the differential diagnosis for your symptoms, be objective and it my help with an answer. LOL ya I had chest xrays, twice, no I didn`t have Pneumonia.
  7. I used to deliver stuff to the power plants in my area along the lake shore(Erie. Unless falling water( eg Niagra ) is used to generate electrical power it is a standard practice in coal generated plants to heat water and produce steam to turn the turbines. The power plant in Lorain Ohio used to have a stack of fish outside every morning that had been caught on their water intake screens. So it is not just nuclear plants, and I never got a chance to see what was happening at the water purification plants. It is just my guess that supplying a large city with water requires a tremendous water intake? Possibly more than a power plant? The plant in Lorain used to give the fish to farmers for fertilizer.
  8. hmmm, table rock?
  9. "Commercial netting has been happening in Lake Erie for a long long time. Obviously with the way the walleye fishery is currently, it's not having a negative impact as it once was..." hmmm? perhaps because Ohio has banned it, and set very strict limits during the spawn? Plus water quality has improved? Obviously commercial fish had an impact in the past? and not just in the great lakes, over harvest by this nation and others still poses a significant problem to the worlds fisheries. Lake Erie walleye are very migratory, where they spawn and where they are caught can be very different things.
  10. Where are you staying? General rule number 1, watch for rocks. It has been a long time since I was there, some rocks in the water are marked with jugs an other devices, some aren`t. There are a lot of islands so be sure of your location, a good map will help a beginner there. Live bait will work, often had to use it while fishing with women and kids, lures will also work well though. Fish shallow 6 feet or less early or late in the day, weed edges mid day. Or just break lines if no weeds are present. Just about any lures that work for bass else where will work there, and not just for bass. My biggest walleye came there slow rolling a spinner bait down a weedy point. Silver and black back rapala`s or perch finish, 7 inch will catch a lot of different species, cast or trolled. Largemouth and smallmouth and you can catch them deep in the same areas at times, 15-20 feet, plus a mix of other fish.
  11. young one, for one they have much better electronics in their boats than the average fisherman. Seasonal patterns, there are well established areas where they fish, er net. There are large schools of walleye out there, er for now, the netters communicate and share info. Usually walleye aren`t hanging around in the same waters in quantity as other fish, it can and does happen at times, but here on the south side of Erie people don`t go out in 70 fow and fish 35 feet down for smallies. It was a rare thing to catch a walleye except in certain areas and certain times of year back in the late 50`s thru mid 70`s here. Ohio bought out the commercial walleye fishermen`s licenses. For years they had said the weren`t taking enough walleye to hurt the population, always problems with them over harvesting and getting caught. With in 3 years the lake was full of walleye. The economic impact? Sport fisherman spend far and away more money fishing than the commercial fishermen ever did. It also affected travel to your country, just in my own family dad, my uncles, cousins all stopped traveling to Ontario, walleye fishermen, they could now catch them here. Lake front property values shot up, boat sales increased, probably thousands of charter captains here now compared to a few commercial netters. Just my opinion? a natural resource, protect it by banning commercial fishing.
  12. Used to fish a quarry here in Ohio, old guy had a small bait shop 10 feet from the waters edge. Every morning when he opened his shop he would skim the dead minnows off the top of the bait tanks and walk over to the edge of the land and drop the dead minnows in the quarry. The dang bass could tell his footsteps by the vibrations and were waiting for the minnows. e and my buddy would walk over and they would take off. Pitching a lure onto shore and dragging it back into the water can catch bass very shallow! Tournaments can be tough, it`s nice to catch a limit every time, but there is some luck involved. No bluffing at a weigh in.
  13. Nice fish Mike, bowfin may be not one of the more sought after fish, but they do give a heck of a fight. More info on them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowfin buddy got one on the Georgian one time when we were up there pushing 20 pounds, got it in deeper weeds 16-18 feet in an area where he had caught a 31 inch walleye the day before. Disappointment when it wasn`t s bigger wally.
  14. Art thanks for the offer, really no plans to head for your area, been through there once long ago. A nice area, we went through the mountain down to Newport News and made it to Virginia Beach one day. I have like less than a zero interest in the ocean. 5 weeks in Florida last year and I went to see the gulf once, it was a mile from where I was staying. My travel now is limited to exploring relocation destinations, Florida wasn`t a good fit for me. Looking at the Knoxville Tennessee area now, it seems like a better fit for me. No hurry or need for me to upgrade tackle, I don`t fish much any more because of disability, and I do sort of have my own tackle shop. 40 ish rods and reels and they all work well enough for me. LOL after steering 18 wheelers around for 20 years that didn`t have power steering you don`t notice a couple of ounces weight difference in a rod or reel much. The low profile design was more a matter of comfort and design for me than weight, I just preferred the thumbar over the old style spool release.
  15. http://www.myoan.net/fishing/weight_calc.html Never caught a grass carp, but carp on lures, and not snagged. A few of them longer than the yard stick I kept in the boat by a good deal. Never guessed at any of mine over 35. Possibly? but it doesn`t look that big in the pic.
  16. LOL Art, started of on Langley bait casters, so everything with in the last 40 years or more is a few steps up. I did like my Abu 5001c`s, but a real slow retrieve rate. Shimano 251`s? antiques of sort and in their day like the Abu`s a high dollar reel. For ease of use? just about any of the Abu 500 series, a great reel for kids and women that don`t seem interested in learning how to use other tackle. Also an excellent reel to use in the dark, fool proof. Just my view? instant anti reverse is nice, the star drag was a great addition. Probably 10 different kinds of Shimano reels dating back to the late 70`s and a half dozen different Abu baitcasters also. I have never really seen a baitcaster, lefty or righty I couldn`t use, just a preference for Abu and Shimano reels, history, no issues with them. Guess I was lucky? baitcasters were all my dad had, and I had the desire to fish, so I learned how to use them. LOL of course now my right hand has to sort of guess at what the left will do, but that also keeps things interesting!
  17. LOL guys I have an appreciation for fine machinery myself, it doesn`t mean I am willing to spend that kind of money for it! 850? a week or more on the water or a new reel? going with more time on the water myself. I have yet to see a fish that was impressed by what it was caught on! I got to start dating richer wimmins!
  18. You don`t want your cranking motor or any electronics wired to a 24 volt system, that includes lights in the boat or running lights. 24 volt for a 24 volt electric motor only. Fished out of a lot of bass boats with 24 volt 70-75 pound thrust motors, and most in the 18-19 foot range, it should have no problems at all on a 15 footer. I had a 17 foot aluminum, with a 55# thrust Motor Guide, a high side boat compared to a glass bass boat, and it caught a lot more wind. Depending on where and how you are accustomed to fishing you can save the batteries by planning an entrance to an area so you are not fighting the wind, plan your entrance to the wind, drifts you into an area, motor for control only. Quieter and saves juice. Really no point in fighting the wind if you don`t have to.
  19. http://cgi.ebay.com/Shimano-Antares-DC-Left-Bait-Casting-Reel-NIB-JAPAN-/160341185889?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2555145561 8fity for a reel? LOL if you can`t catch fish you can look good trying?
  20. LOL Bill, try jig fishing, nice when you aren`t sure if a bat is hitting your line or a bass your lure! Luckily I never hooked a bat! might have to cut the line on one of them.
  21. LOL Terry, we do have alien problems. A bonfire last night with my son and his friends and watched the neighbors fireworks. the ones that don`t fish. Smart people spend their money on fishing tackle! Had a neighbor that used to drop 10k a year on a fireworks display, then the township told him he would have to get insurance and cops to direct traffic. Dude put on a better show than some of the towns in the area, and we could watch it around the bonfire in the back yard!
  22. I have fished at night from shore and a boat, also wading in waters I was familiar with. Not really a question of distance for me, a lake, pond close by gave me more time on the water. On vacations I regularly fished the lakes I was staying at during the night. Mostly for bass, but there are a number of species that hit well at night. Some waters have a much better night bite than others. I never had much in the way of success for pike at night, but a couple of hours before dark can be a hot time.
  23. Javlin is a glass boat? 15 foot? a 70-75 pound thrust should be fine. 2 battery system, is your boat wired for 24 volts to the trolling motor or 12? Just something to consider.
  24. I used to fish a Wednesday evening bass tournament at a small local above ground reservoir. The water is crystal clear and the banks fall at a 45 degree angle to about 17 feet deep.LOL and actually weeds down there, unusual for an Ohio body of water, sunlight usually doesn`t get that far down here. Fall rate can be very important, if a bait is dropping to quickly they may take a look, but then ignore it. Never used senkos much, a lizard or worm with a 4/0-5/0 hook allowed to drop slowly worked as well as anything. Put on too much weight? the number of hits dropped, at times the difference between 1/16th and 1/8th of an ounce matters.
  25. LOL Johnny, maybe Bernie Madoff is secretly running the treasury department from prison? The concept of sending good paying jobs overseas is beyond my grasp, the politicans are allowing the destruction of their own tax base, and who benefits? It certainly doesn`t seem to be the average working man, or the country? Hello Washington? unemployment is at 10%, spend 10% less? or tax those still working 10% more? Take a look around the world, countries all over with self inflicted financial problems, and none of the politicians seem to want to accept resposibility for them. Pick a party.
