Had some time for a quick fishing trip before flying to Orlando for a week of amusement parks and punch-you-in-the-face heat and humidity. "Come on dad, the fish are waiting…" Second trip with his baitcaster (may have to click on link to watch video): We didn't have a lot of luck with the largemouth in the pads but some smallmouth played on top. The fight: Solid bass on a super spook: The release: Had to get a shirt for the trip: Lots of fish at Disney's Animal Kingdom: Feeding the gators at GatorLand (click on link to watch video): What Else would you have with fried gator???

Topwater, although a topwater would also be number 2 and 3 as well for me. lol With your other 3 options I'd suggest a minnow/twitch bait or a crankbait.

Saw something the other day that applies to me, and I'm sure many others: "I go fishing so I don't choke people." So it does help those people for sure.

Just needs a few fish scales, grouse feathers and a little blood.

They started fishing has soon as they could hold a rod and not drop it in the lake. My son was casting and reeling on his own at 5 and was fishing a zara spook on his own at 6 (I remember when I was a teenager and started learning, and then got the hang of, a walking lure and thinking what a "master" I was). My daughter is 6 and handles drop shooting well on her own but hasn't got casting down too well yet. For the topwater lures I cast them out and then let her work the popper back to the boat while I try to get a cast in.

I don't think it was nearly as big as the picture makes it look. We only put one fish on the scale and it might have been that nice smallie in the 4th photo. It was just over 3lbs and was about as big a bass as we got that day, except for the pike.

Well the bass opener was a bit like Christmas in summer for my 2 kids. They didn't sleep too well the night before and woke up early the day of. Grey skies and light rain were not a surprise but the number of boats were. The bass opener has not really been a thing for me so I haven't fished it. I'm not sure if we fished any spots that hadn't been pounded already that morning but we did just fine. My daughter spent much of her time fishing a drop shot for panfish but did get in on the topwater action the rest of us were enjoying. My son has been on me for a while to use a bait caster and I finally got him one of his own (both my brother and I reel right, my son left). My hope was he'd use it for a bit and not get too frustrated right away and slowly pick it up with practice this summer. Instead, he used it the whole day and only switched to his spinning rod to give his hands a break, and had 1 backlash the whole day (I had 2). Apart from the constant action the other key to a great day out was enough food in the cooler to keep the 2 kids happy. I swear they're part racoon. No surprise the panfisher with the first fish, also the most fish and the most species, six. (and she chirped the rest of the boat the whole day) First fish on his baitcaster. All of our fish were on topwaters except for the kids panfish. I tied up double drop shot for her just for this photo opportunity. The back of the boat ok as well. He experienced hand cramps near the end of the day. Taking a break from the panfish to nail bass on a topwater like the big boys. Good day. Good day 2.0. We got enough fish to lose count and even had a couple of pike on top as well.

NF - How safe are infant life jackets?
kickingfrog replied to John Bacon's topic in General Discussion
As I remember it when I went looking for infant lifejackets for my kids I found out that there isn't any that are "approved". Until they are a certain weight (maybe 20lbs) you're on your own. -
It'd be a nice addition to a man cave to have the diorama of the different classifications of lake they used to use in those early days.

KickingFrog and Son in Outdoor Canada mag.
kickingfrog replied to farsider's topic in General Discussion
Well he's seen it. His two reactions: He thinks he's famous and he is not happy that they incorrectly said it was his biggest bass. His sister was even more excited and immediately asked when her photo was going to be in a magazine. -

Ah. I think I sent a photos years ago of him but didn't remember a recent one. I didn't get my copy in the mail today. Now I have to wait all weekend…. and figure a way to get his sister in the magazine or someone's tail is grass. -

Very cool. I haven't heard or seen this yet. I don't even remember submitting a photo recently. Was this online or in the magazine? Time to search. -
My daughter is now 6 and has been fishing for a few years. Mostly with a 3ft ice fishing rod that served her well fishing from docks and some short trips in the boat during stays at a cottage. This year I got her a proper rod and reel for her birthday and yesterday was her first day long fishing trip with it. I think more planning went into the snacks and lunch for this trip than my 6 week arctic canoe trip. The crew included my brother and son. Started her off with a drop shot with a panfish sized tube and she had 2 perch in the boat before her brother had made is first cast. We were slowly woking an area so that she could fish beside the boat and my brother and son could cast the weeds for pike. I hadn't had time to open a box yet and she says she has "my third fish already" (her trash talk game is already at a pro level). I look over and see her rod doubled over and figure she's got a weed. Then the drag starts to sing and the battle is on. The rod is a 5 and a half foot light action with power pro main line, but the drop shot was tied with 4lb test flouro so she had her hands full. After big fight all the while I'm trying to tell her that the fish might break-off at any time, my brother gets it in the net. Now she's a normal 6 year old as I'm told over and over so basically if she's awake she's talking (there was one time in the car that she didn't say anything for about 5 minutes and I assumed she was asleep. When I looked in the mirror and saw she was awake I figured she was plotting the destruction of the world). It took a while for her to calm down enough to take a photo. The magic pike lure: She wanted to get in the photo when my brother caught one later in the day. She was so excited to bring home a fish that we all got to eat.

Even with all the stress we put on a fishery a few hours of high winds isn't going to do squat.
