Lake Kipawa - Critique My Plan of Attack
Old Ironmaker replied to Sterling's topic in General Discussion
As Ohio Fisherman start shallower and work deeper. In my experience a Shad Rap at less than 1.5 MPH is too slow. Don't Pigeon hole yourself to a specific trolling speed, vary the speed the fish will tell you fast or slow. I like a harness slow too. Blow your worms full of air, get a syringe at a pharmacy. That is a big system to work with 1 boat. Ask where at a local bait/tackle shop, they want you to do well. I always look at the racks and see what tackle has less on it, that may be the ticket Try a Lindy Rig and floating Jig head for drifting Leeches etc. I like the Leeches best as live bait for drifting You are wasting valuable time still fishing unless you know you are on a school or it is a hole that has produced Start with trolling covering as much water as possible Work the shores and Islands on the windward side. With all that structure I would be stumped as to where to start. A few cold beers, some Hi Test and snacks offered to locals and others that have been there before can be better than the most expensive electronics. I like your approach. A job without a plan is a plan for disaster. Go get em. And you two stay safe. If the catching is poor the Fall colours will be fantastic. Enjoy. -
Georgian bay musky guides recommendation?
Old Ironmaker replied to Tjames09's topic in General Discussion
Drive the extra few miles and go out with Dan Columby on Nippising's West Arm. It is well worth the extra drive. Many here will recommend him. -
Yes Brian, I know the basic difference between a 9.9 and 15 HP is a carb kit. I know many guys that have a 15 that says 9.9, not 10, 9.9, that's another joke. The blocks for a 250 and a 300 Merc are identical on older models, I don't know about the newer power plants. On iboats a fellow from Alberta said he was sold a 17 footer rated for a 90 and the dealer sold him a 150. They will sell you anything you will pay for. Personally I think that's nuts if it is true. The guy could virtually tear off the transom eventually. Mine was more of a technical question than what the thread evolved into but some good info regardless. I will tell you 110% because I know this first hand. If there is a major insurance claim as in the case I personally know of, the insurance provider was looking at paying out high 6 digits because their insured was liable in a major accident resulting in severe injury. They tore apart that boat looking for a reason not to pay out. They didn't find anything out of the ordinary, operator error. If they found any design or mechanical fault they would go after the manufacturer after the pay out. Off topic but I just don't get why guys will get behind the wheel of a boat without liability insurance but would never back a car out of a driveway without automobile insurance. A poll here would be interesting to find how many of us actually do have any kind of marine insurance. Boating accidents usually don't turn out very well considering the lack of safety features other than a PFD on a boat which may or maybe not worn.

It was Sue Watson that did Bob Izumi's show a few Falls ago and gave him a fishing lesson.

I have come to learn that yes, the number on your engine is taken as what HP you have and it is all taken at the prop by all manufacturers since the mid 80's in North America. The Transport Canada plate that states max HP on the boat is not a suggestion it is law. One can be charged for non compliance here in Canada. More than one boater has changed the cowl to represent a lower HP. Regardless of insurance being null and void I can't see why someone would risk the damage to the transom over time.

My sincerest condolences Rick. If you want to talk call me. I have lost too many relatives and friends to drunk driving. I have been known to take the the keys away from a drunk that insisted on driving more than once. One idiot charged me with damages in a civil case. The Judge threw him out of the court room and awarded me court costs. You can use reasonable force to prevent someone from driving drunk. Sometimes unreasonable force. Including ripping the wires out of their engine. The Cop whispered thank you to me and refused to charge me thus the civil case.

Hi Cliff, when we cleaned out Mom and Dads place after it sold we couldn't give away their furniture, including to the charities. Mom couldn't believe it as she said it's brand new, yep Ma it was brand new in 1989. If I had to do it again I would just take it to land fill and save me many calls and a few head aches.

Help! Federal regulations question
Old Ironmaker replied to Dave Bailey's topic in General Discussion
That's too funny Dave. When I first read it I thought you said "pooped". -
I think I have it, actually no I don't. I think the article I read that brought this up the author was trying to seem more intelligent than he is. I have always asked questions, too many one teacher said in grade school. When I was training at the plant it was usually the guy training me who's head hurt. I was amazed at the lack of knowledge that some old timers actually knew about the process. I ended up writing the supervisors training manual before I left. That made my head hurt. This is one of those questions that is so cloudy there may be no definitive answer. The reason I asked was exactly what Grimsby brought up. Also a sharp insurance investigator might just find that the engine is over rated for the boat regarding a big claim and deny it.

I have read where marine horsepower is rated as horsepower at the prop as well as horse power at the flywheel. What is that to mean? What's the difference? When my Transport Canada plate says maximum horsepower which horsepower are they referring to? Anyone here know what the difference is? Thanks all.

There are some class act Cops out there. A few goofs on power trips give the other 95% a bad rap. Just like the 5% of fishermen and the rest of society. You found a good one Rizzo. But my question is why would you have to vacate regardless?

Not arrested? Don't leave us hanging Rick. Did they see your photo at Canada Customs? When the family had the condo in Florida a Lady and I flew down there out of Buffalo for 3 days on a red eye back to Buffalo. We got pulled over at the bridge on the way back at 2 AM. Sitting in the waiting room this woman looks at the wanted photos and says " I know that guy". 5 hours after severe questioning we were back on the road. She was prettier than smart.

Those folks that braved the elements Saturday earned every penny. For those that didn't come into the money congrats to each and everyone of you that braved the elements. We live on the lake about an hour west and I watched those breakers pound the rock wall enough to shake the cottage and that was after the rain stopped. Bass fishing in that, no way. Normally I would say it would be foolish to fish last Saturday but these folks are pro's. 150 fishermen, amazing. This tourney seems to get bigger and better quality fish caught every year. Great job well done goes out to all the organizers as well. The Hawg Smallies are on the feed bag right now. The problem is getting to them at this time of the year. The boat is out of the slip, fuelled up and ready for a day that is fishable. I wonder if drop shotting was the ticket for the winners. It is simple fishing in Fall. If someone wants to get a personal best Small Mouth head this way ASAP. Heed your wind predictions. The lake can change in 15 minutes this time of the year. I find Wind Finder for Port Colbourne fairly accurate. Don't forget a 1 meter wave doesn't include the belly, that makes it an 8 foot wave. That's what they fished in, amazing. If I'm not mistaken Melanie did a show here during the Fall with Izumi a few years back and gave him a lesson in Bass fishing in the same conditions, that Ranger was bobbing up and down like a little cork in the Ocean and he packed it in after an hour and fished better conditions on day 2. That lady knows her stuff for sure. Thanks for the results and congrats again to all.

I couldn't afford to work up there at those prices. I talked to the Dunker while he was up there. He is working for an amazing company. Flew him to the closest civilization so he could order a pizza and a few beers plus a few days fishing. You should give that company a shout out Brian. -60 C, Come On Man. How do the hydraulics on a crane function at -60? We had major problems with systems freezing in Hamilton at far warmer temps, including steam lines. -60, that is as insane as the price of water or should I say bottled ice. There isn't any WiFi and virtually no cell service there so it may be a while before he gets back to us.

Help! Federal regulations question
Old Ironmaker replied to Dave Bailey's topic in General Discussion
When I first started visiting Bro and Sis in laws in Halifax area I found it odd that amongst all of Dave pals none fished. They lived in a new home built on a small lake in Mount Uniak. I could see the Small mouth cruising the rocks along the shore line. None of the neighbours had a rod I could borrow so off the Wall Mart I went. When I asked them about needing a licence to fish they looked at me like I had 2 heads. Apparently they had 1 CO for 1/4 of the province for inland freshwater lakes, most were on the Atlantic. I bought 2 Rappala's and caught one Smallie after another. They love eating fish but no one fished. Fishing to them is something you had to do for a living, not for sport. I did keep a few and fried them in Panko, they loved them. -
We were night fishing for Bullheads this spring on Nanticoke creek when a Lab started screaming, she got a treble hook in her paw and it was buried. No way could anyone get near her to even see it. I cringe still today at the sound the poor puppy made. Off to the emerg Vets, $$$$$$. Someone left the treble hook in the grass for someone to find. Usually that someone is a child or pet. Please clean up after ourselves.

Ridiculous prices for sure WD. Lucky you drink beer not water. Thanks for the read, interesting for sure. How can a person think about making enough to put food on the table, I know there aren't jobs there that can sustain a family at those prices. No one pays that for food there, that's impossible. As HTHM says "Hey look, a can of worms lets open it". Open a Photo Bucket account and we can see some pics next time you head north. It's so easy even I can do it. What would a 24 of beer be, $300.00 ?

This should be interesting, both teams swept good ball clubs. Bring on the Cleveland capital "C"s.

Instructions, who needs stinkin' instructions. Ikea instructions are the worst. I don't know how many extra holes I have drilled to build those things properly. When my uncle was a kid my Mom who had just moved from western NY to Hamilton sent him to the store when he was visiting her and Dad and told him to buy 100 napkins. He came home with 100 feminine napkins. She didn't know what a serviette was either.

Good news Fisherman7. A stiff piece of weed whacker line through the overflow helps if she's clogged up. Also a quick shot of a pressure washer through one of the lower inlets has helped clear crud in the cooling system before changing a good impellor. A pal left his engine down and creek water guck plugged the thing up, the power washer did the trick. He plugged one lower inlet and blew water up the other inlet, just a quick shot. I have to add that on my big Mariner the tell tale stream will only show when the thermostat opens. Running on cold water in cold weather with the muffs on I freaked when I didn't see any water overflowing. I had to get my engine Guru out here and he explained it to me and laughed. But not before he gave me some line about a blown water pump that would cost 500 bananas, funny guy.
-
I have been taught if the overflow at the top is not pissing overflow the upper section of the cooling chamber is not being cooled. The impellor is not working properly. The water that comes out of the exhaust cools the lower gear. I will not run an engine without water overflowing well.

PAB is a wonderful spot, especially in the fall. Good report. I saw your face at the Canadian Customs Border crossing at Queenston a few weeks ago. Your secret is safe.

Yes, one is that you are forced to watch Leaf games.

The poor guy has no idea what I'm talking about. He should get used to trying to figure out what I'm talking about.
