Health issue, Sinusitis, any help please
Old Ironmaker replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
I have had my snozola broken a few times too. I don't know why I have waited so long to address this. That's what I was going to suggest to my Doc. to see a Ear, Nose and Throat guy. I Googled to find one in Hamilton and not 1 came up, just TO. I'll drive to Kingdom Come for a good Dr. -
I have been dealing what was a just the occasional stuffy nose for a dozen years and finally went to see a Dr Greenbaum . in Hamilton 5 years ago because it was worse and worse every year. He did an in office Ultra Sound and an allergy test, gave me a script for a nasal spray AVAMIS and said use it once a day or twice max and see me in 5 years. This last year I would give my left nut and bolt to be able to breath well. I went to see him another allergy prick test and he said here's another script for 5 more years, use it more see you in 5 years, bye, bye,,,,,,, next patient please. I realized now he is an Allergist and I don't have an allergy. I will see my Family guy asap and go from there. I am not sleeping. that affects my Diabetes and that effects everything else. I wake every 30 minutes to wet my mouth because it's so dry from breathing through it wakes me. The snot gathers in the back of my throat that I can't breath through my nose or mouth. Breathing is important, you never think about it until you can't. I take something called Helexia a sinus med for diabetics, also a pot of steaming water with a few drops of Eucalyptus helps a bit, a tiny bit. I go through a Vicks inhaler every few weeks. Last night was the 3rd night this week I finally got to sleep at 05:00 then a few hours and up because I'm stuffed up 100%, zero air through my nasal passages. Sun, Mon and Tue. Today it didn't start breathing through my nose unto 5PM. Guys I know this isn't the life and death things poor souls go through daily, some our friends here but any experience with this that someone can help with I really would appreciate it. I do need your help from our OFC community. Thanks Mr. Al Stuffedup.

When you are talking about a minimal amount of fuel for the year on a 9.9 won't break the bank so use hi octane fuel only. Most if not all hi test fuel does not contain Ethanol. Adding an additive like Stabil or 2 plus 4 will not harm anything. We are talking a few bucks a tank. 2 bucks difference for a 29 litre tank at 10 cents more a litre for the good stuff. A Tim Hortons coffee.

A majority of the uneducated young people I personally know today just don't want a trade. Grand kids of friends. When they find out there is schooling involved and have to be up at 05:00 they run. Why should they work, single Mom gives them money for whatever they want and play video games until 5 AM. I have a good friend who's son is 25. He has never held a job for more than 6 months. Now that all his pals have jobs, cars and girlfriends he wants to get paid but not earn it. Every one is stupid, especially his old supervisors. I have several associates that can hire him but I won't recommend him and it has caused a riff in his father and my friendship. Sad.

I tried but never got into it. The boys and I had a remote camp we went to on the Ottawa years back Fishing until hunting season. I went out with them as a shadow for a morning goose hunt. Laying on my back in a cold damp frozen corn field with stalks jammed up my kiester in the dark waiting for daylight is not what I call fun. As soon as it was daylight I heard boom, boom, boom and before I could get to my feet it was over. So I went along for a Deer hunt, with my knees it was a bust too. I did learn that Blue Jays are Forest Rats as in they warn every other animal you are there. I'll stick to fishing. Shooting, that I like, I still get to the gun club for some trap skeet when invited and that I enjoy. Good luck to you. I hear it's fun.

Hunting Bear with a spear gets some backlash
Old Ironmaker replied to chris.brock's topic in General Discussion
I read about this today. The guy got hammered on social media as bad as the Musky clubber in Windsor. And he did nothing illegal. I don't agree with that type of hunting but to tar and feather him in the court of public opinion. is a bit too much. -
What a fantastic opportunity for a young person willing to work there way up. And great of you to offer it here. Another example of the community atmosphere they have created here at OFC. Good luck finding someone. In my experience trying to find a lead generator willing to get experience and work there way to a sales position aged me, lost hair and what was left turned grey. It seemed everyone wanted to start where normally it would take years to get to without an education in business. They wanted it and wanted it now. The new car lease, latest laptop, I phone, expense account and a corner office. And this is out of high school or maybe a few years of Community College they never finished. It was very surprising to me. I had one kids Mother actually call me to tell me how much her child should be paid. Another Mom called me to ream me for cutting her kids hours back. He was supposed to be watching the store and was given the opportunity to actually garner leads and sell. I drove by after dinner and stopped to pick up paper work I forgot only to find him and a few pals playing poker in the showroom and a few girls in a Hot Tub. I should have fired him on the spot. And Mommy called and complained I cut his hours back, wowza. .

Marine Plywood and using composite 2x4" for boat bunks?
Old Ironmaker replied to Fisherpete's topic in General Discussion
Man how many thousands of dollars worth of lures are in one of those boxes in the link you provided Landry? Several thousands I'm sure. I don't like how they are jammed in there, the idea I thought is to keep them separated. I got sick and tired of trying to pull the plug that is working to et on another line and spending time to get the hooks untangled. Then just giving up because I have a hook in my hand. I want the boxes closed so when I might hit a wave they are not all over the floor. I love my Tackle Mate box. Since I got mine a few of the boys followed suit. Sorry about the hi-jack. -

FishFarmer used that space age slick polymer stuff for his bunks, slick as snot. I don't know the proper name. Just make sure the boat is in the water before taking the hook off the trailer, I saw the aftermath of a boat that slid off right onto the concrete ramp, smashed it to smithereens. -

I have had to go through Barrie and Orillia a few times in the last couple of years, man what a mess. Where did all those cars come from? TO I guess, what a pain. I don't know how you guys can stand that drive. It is the main reason I bought south not north and that was 21 years ago, it's even worse now that I couldn't believe possible. It looks like Toronto starts in Burlington now and goes north to Orillia. -

You don't know how to do something Landry? Tell me it ain't so. I get what you mean now. I have seen some pretty ingenious tackle storage solutions out there. I came up with a home made rod holder for my boat. Cut a 3 foot piece of 4" black ABS pipe and screwed 4 @ 2" 6" pieces of ABS around it vertically. Then I glued a 4" piece of 2" pipe to a 4 to 2 inch reducing coupling on the bottom. The 2" piece on the bottom fits tightly over the post of my removable seat posts. I mount it on the bow mount seat post and can store vertically and safely 4 rods, or I can put it behind me on the boat post on the rear casting platform. Once we start fishing I just pop out the seat mount post and keep it to the side of the bow up front. That gives me 7 total vertical rod holders on the boat. I will not lay rods on the floor anymore since I stepped on my best rod. -
Oh, its that time of the year again!

Reminds me of being a kid. Took the 59 Chevy wagon to Simcoe and picked bushels of plum tomatoes until the car was full and the 4 of us sat in the front seat. Then again the next day or until the garage was full of bushel baskets of tomatoes. Then the fun started. I hated tomato sauce then. What I would give for one of those jars today. -
I need to catch a fish, and what better than to catch a Musky. There was a Musky guy that chartered on LSC that was a member here that went by the name of Handlebarz, He was very active here but I haven't seen him here for quite some time. Anyone have a contact # because he would be my first choice if he still does it. We would go out on a charter then spend a few days on our own. I have never set foot on that lake fishing. The second thing would be a cottage with water access or a motel close to a ramp recommended. A slip at the cottage would be best. We are talking the end of Sept into Oct. My God Daughters wedding is Sept 17th and my fishing buddy is my Compare. Her wedding gift is a 40 year old home Dom and Mary bought for them in Hammertown in May and he and I (plus a few dozen guys that owed him) did a complete gut and remodel, more he than I. We all chipped in. All top notch materials. I told him if there is life after death I want to come back as his grand child. Please any recommendations.

I call this the season that never was. Levels here on Erie are high. We have 2 feet of beach where we normally have 20'. I have caught a grand total of 3 pics. Not 1 Erie jumbo, not 1 this year. Get this, water temp at 75 feet deep is 75F. Not even the Pic gurus are catching fish. I have caught more fish when I lived in downtown Hamilton and didn't have a boat or a clue.

When you hit an Immovable Object (NF)
Old Ironmaker replied to hutch4113's topic in General Discussion
Just thinking about this and talking to Ted the marine Guru a few minutes ago, he may have bent the bejeezus out of the shaft and damaged pretty well any moving part in that drive train. I sure hope not but that was a big violent hit. So Ted said 4 grand may not get the boat on the water. Especially if it was a stainless prop. Hopefully not. Like Ted said 2 grand may not and probably doesn't cover a new prop that can go $600.00 alone. Like Brian said you are a good guy to do that for him. If he had to get a tow what would it go for up there? I got a short tow in by the Coast Guard to the marina by the Coast Guard when I broke down just outside of Port Dover and expected to pay for it. The charge was "zero". I am on record so I wouldn't expect to get that price again, especially if I ran out of gas, again. They knew I ran out. I am very surprised he couldn't raise anyone on the VHF. I was out 12 miles in Erie and was able to reach the Coast Guard station calling Pan, Pan, Pan on channel 16 in Sarnia on my 21 year old unit. I was told the Coast Guard has more powerful receivers than our units. -

Oh that looks like it hurts, no amount of pain meds will help. $4000.00 to replace a lower unit? I guess I am spoiled having 2 retired marine mechanics amongst my group of close friends. I have seen them take off and replace a lower unit in 30 minutes or less if things go smooth. The last rebuilt lower unit I picked up for them cost 1800. Even if it's $2000.00 like Cliff said I can't see 20 hours in labour, no way. That's a gouge. There are many hazards out here on Erie fishing for Walleye and Bows, rocks aren't one of them luckily. Going for Bass well that's when I need to watch my previous GPS routes and the water ahead of me. -

Landry you said you used "downspout" to hold your Musky lures. Please elaborate. I bought one of those "Tackle Mate" boxes for all my big Walleye plugs and spoons. The best $89.99 I have spent in a long time. They also have a deeper box for big bricks you guys throw. -
I'm no a hunter by any means, went once that was enough for me, but shooting a nuisance Bear out of season I would think that Bear is going to be kept by the Ministry for study. I don't think you can make a rug out of it.

I love your boat JJ. Kids enjoying it is priceless.

Yep she really is good at it. Now the truth, I don't cut it right. No pattern. That's just fine with me, I quit a few years ago. But seriously the lawns and ditches are green today, not Masters green but not yellow like all year.

Pigeontroller they are nice features. The new 23' Crestliner I rode in has that feature as well, but it was 75 grand all decked out. I looked hard for over 2 years before I found my boat. What I found is that if there were any deep "V" aluminums for sale 17 to 19 feet they were beat to all hell. Those that were in good condition were not for sale as guys kept them for decades and maybe swapped out outboards or sold them to friends or family if buying new. The Lunds and StarCrafts as well as some others were built like Abrams Tanks in the 90's and early century and guys couldn't justify $50,000.00 to $70,000.00 to upgrade to new if the boat itself was solid and well cared for. I fished in a nice 17' side council Lund last year here on Erie in 1/2 meter or less wave height, it was not fun. The big difference I found was how much more room just 2 feet made in length, a 2 foot longer boat is much wider and deeper depending on make. Put in a few boxes, small cooler and a few bags and I was tripping trying to move around and find my balance. I would never put more than 2 in that boat on Erie. River or northern lake yes but not here. The owner had a second bilge pump installed as back wash or trailing waves coming over the transom was a problem with his kicker adding weight. It was not a warm and fuzzy feeling watching water pumping over board the entire time out. I hope some of this info will help a prospective buyer. Edit: It was not a Lund come to think about it. I think it may have been a Prince Craft. The splash well had an opening on the interior side if you can understand what I mean. Water would splash over the well onto the floor and into the bilge area. I wouldn't buy a boat without a sealed bilge.

If I have learned anything about batteries I learned it from here. The #1 thing I did learn is that the difference between a $79.99 battery and the $139.99 battery that all look the same to me looking at them is that the cheap battery has less numbers of available charges in it from 20% to full charge than the more expensive battery does. So that tells me I will get better value from the more expensive battery. The other thing is that batteries sit on retailers shelves for a long time. The older batteries are brought forward on the shelve to sell first, like milk at the store. Check the manufacturers date. You can be buying a battery that is a year old when you can buy a new one. One battery manufacturer makes 80% of all batteries sold. I can't remember the company, something instruments. Then the sellers name is plastered on it. The best deals on batteries in the Hamilton/Niagara area is Acme Battery off Parkdale Ave. North, Paling Ave maybe. He will sell you the best battery available. If you want it to be an Interstate they put that wrap on it, etc. They did 20 years ago at least. They have been there for 30 years and that tells me something. I have bought cranking batteries that lasted 10 years as long as it is maintained, maybe more I sold my cars with their batteries in them. Wormdunker got a good deal in Niagara area. Better yet buy a gas kicker. All this battery talk is draining. Ha.

The world revolves around talking about weather then a conversation may morph into something else. I did PM Pics. What is the "goof tax" for the foul? Sorry.
