  2. October 10th, 2016 For immediate release: On Saturday October 8th, 2016 75 teams composed of 150 anglers blasted off from the Upper Niagara River in Chippawa Ontario in search of the 5 biggest bass they could catch. Weather was a major factor in this year’s event as high winds, big waves and rain met anglers as they ventured out of the river and into Lake Erie. Changing wind directions made travel very difficult and anglers had to focus on the spots they had without running and gunning. In the late morning the clouds gave way to bluebird skies and gave teams at least some reprieve. As the weigh in began it was obvious that the conditions and relatively tough fishing had played a role as a number of teams loaded their boats early without weighing in any fish. As the teams weighing in progressed the 2015 Champions Simon and Melanie Frost came to the scales with smiles on their faces and the scale dropped at 24.89lbs anchored by a 6.31lbs monster smallmouth. It seemed as though the husband and wife duo were destined to repeat as team after team could not surpass their weight. It wasn’t until long time partners Scott Huffman and Rob McIntosh came to the scales that we had a team come close to dethroning the Frost’s. The fish were scaled and a new leader was born with 25.07lbs of Lake Erie Smallmouth! Later in the weigh in the 2014 Champions of John and Perry Poirier came to the stage with another large bag and the scale settled at 23.52 lbs putting them in third place overall, out of that bag also came the new, and overall Big Fish with a giant 6.42lbs! The new live leaderboard let teams see where they sat in the overall standings and was a welcome addition to the tournament. As the final standings and payouts were tallied, the awards for the kids colouring contest were handed out and put rod/reel combos, Canadian Tire Gift Cards, and more into the hands of all the participants! Dirty Pig BBQ severed up some outstanding food while the Monster Energy Drinks Truck handed out samples to all in attendance. In the background during the weigh in the live release team worked diligently to release all of the fish brought to the scales and a brand new bass tagging program was carried out. 100 Smallmouth are now dawning special tags in order to study the recapture points of fish release from the weigh in. The tags carry and identification number with an email address and phone number to call if anyone catches them again. After the final standings had been tallied prizes were awarded by MC Eric Hill and weighmaster Jason Clay to all winning teams. Out of 75 boats a total of 26 teams received cash and/or prizes, with the total payout for the event surpassing $38,000 which is over 235% of the angler collected funds. The cash payout alone exceeded 135% of angler collected funds making this one of the highest payout percentages in Canadian based bass tournaments. Every team walked away with a grab bag filled with goodies. The sponsors of this event deserve nothing but thanks and appreciation for their generous contributions lead by the title sponsor Canadian Tire. Canadian Tire 4th Avenue St. Catharines store owner Pat McMaster attended the weigh in to support all the anglers and see who took home the top prizes. Event Sponsors Include: • Canadian Tire, Shimano Canada, Freedom Tackle Corp, G-Loomis Canada, Fishbum Outfitters, Athens Printing, Mountainview homes, Pure Fishing Canada, Anglers Choice, Carstar Niagara Falls, Jack Link’s, Live Target Lures, Power Pro, Dirty Pig BBQ, Set the Hook, Vigor Eyewear, Ultra Tungsten, The Rod Glove, X-Zone Lures, Niagara Outdoor Show, and C-Tow Niagara Rewarded for their efforts – Winning Team of Scott Huffman and Rob McIntosh with 25.07lbs took home a total value of $7500.00 including $5800 cash, a $1000 Canadian Tire Bonus, and the Pure Fishing Top Team Award! In second place with 24.89 lbs Simon and Melanie Frost took home $4000 in cash which included the Carstar Returning Team award! In 3rd overall with 23.52lbs and the overall big fish at 6.42lbs John and Perry Poirier netted at total of $5,250.00 which include the Pure Fishing Big Smallmouth and Big Largemouth prizes (no team weighed in a largemouth so prizes were combined). The 4th place duo of Sy Phengchanh and John Stathakos with 23.48lbs won $3,700.00 total including the Shimano and G-Loomis Rewards program. In 5th place New York based anglers Joe Fonzi and Larry Mazur netted $1400 in cash! With many contingency prizes to fill out the prize structure additional teams were rewarded. 5 lucky teams took home the Jack Link’s Bonus payout worth $200 each. Partick and Slaw0mir Zajdel won the Freedom Tackle Corp smallest 5 fish limit. The Pure Fishing Mystery weight which is 55% of the winning weight was awarded to Landon Weiske and Kevin Hordyk. The Power Pro Rewards draw was won by Drew Sokolowski. For teams finishing just out of the money prize packs from Anglers Choice, Dirty Pig BBQ, Live Target, Vigor Eyewear, Ultra Tungsten, X Zone Lures, and C-Tow Niagara made their day! On behalf of the St.Catharines Bassmasters we wanted to thank all sponsors, volunteers, the Chippawa Public Dock Committee, City of Niagara Falls, the Lighthouse Church of God (for allowing parking), Shirley Fisher (for allowing parking), and most of all the anglers who participated and families who came out to support them. Looking forward to 2017! The date and registration details will be released soon! For Full results and payouts please see https://www.facebook.com/ctcerieopen/. All pictures and Results will be posted on www.stcatharinesbassmasters.com very shortly. Champions Scott Huffman and Rob McIntosh Pictured Below 2016 CTC Open Full Results.pdf

  4. How did you find the raccoons ????? Man do I have stories about those buggers!
  5. For sure Bill! Every spot is different! I have certainly been spooled before lol and had some very close calls! That's what makes it awesome! The Aerial show still amazes me when a 25 lbs fish clears the water 3ft in the air!
  6. Thanks for the kind words all ... Fishing from a boat can be more productive some nights simply because you can move around. Have fished off credit into about 40fow. Heck have even flatlined with the glow spoons before if you get tired of casting, just wind in and recharge every 5 mins. But in general off any of the river mouths in 15' plus ... And please be sure to be well out of range of anyone casting from shore or piers. They can be all over so no need to cause any grief with guys from shore. Bottom fishing off the piers for salmon is something I have never been a fan of. Although it does take I share of fish at times. If the fish are there and guys on bottom are getting them then downsize spoon and less glow and hug the bottom really slow. There are many many options for colours now but I still gravitate to the old five of diamonds or orange accent. Another small tip - I paint the back of all my spoons in hit orange and in early in the dawn it seems to make a good difference!
  7. Night Time is the Right Time Late Summer Kings are here and there is no better feeling than doing one on one combat with these formidable giants! When the sun goes down the action heats up and when the conditions align it can be fast and furious action as pods of Salmon slide into river mouths of all the major great lakes tributaries and become accessible to shore and small boat anglers. Forget down rigging and trolling this is casting glow spoon primetime where you get to feel everything from the thumping of your spoon to some rod jarring strikes! When The middle of August right through till the end of September is the prime time. Action can heat up as soon as the sun hits the horizon and can last until the morning dew is burning off. Peaks and lulls throughout the night are the normal as these pods of fish move around in the open water at the river mouth. Normal peaks last an hour or two and being in the right spot and the right time you can put up some impressive numbers of Chinooks. Techniques I have always deployed three main methods in order to figure out what they want on any certain night. Surely just casting and retrieving a glow spoon will work, but paying attention to details is what separates a random fish to a repeatable pattern. Low and Slow This involves casting as far as you can, when the spoon hits the water tighten up your line and let it flutter all the way to the bottom keeping a tight line to feel the spoon movement. After the spoon touches the bottom give it one quick jig and start the retrieve. In this case the retrieve should be slow and steady keeping the spoon tight to the bottom. Down and fast Same technique as above to get the spoon to the bottom, only this time you speed up the steady retrieve so the spoon will slowly raise throughout your retrieve and cover the entire water column. The most important thing about choosing the speed is the spoon itself. You want to feel the spoon thump where it flutters side to side, not completely rolls over. Simple experimentation can tell you what speed works for each different spoon. High and Dry This time when you spoon hits the water you let it flutter down from 1-6 feet (a few seconds) and then immediately start your retrieve. A fast retrieve is the ticket as you want to stay near the top of the water column. This is best used when fish are very active on the surface and jumping or rolling. Any variations of the above can be used, the key is to know what you were doing when you get bit, and keep with that hoping that a pattern for the night comes thorough. If you are fishing with friends everyone should try a different technique until you figure out what pattern is working that night. The Bite: There for the most part is no mistaking when you get smashed by one of these giants, however many times just simply slack line is a fish rushing from behind and overtaking the spoon. Many people dont clue in on the slack line bites that happen while the spoon flutters to the bottom and at any time during the retrieve. If you feel any change in the action or line lightness set the hook! Tackle: Having a good selection of glow spoons in size, weights and colors allows you to fish the conditions. There are many different variations on shapes to choose from, heavier spoons help to cast and keep them down during faster retrieves. Smaller profiles are often needed for extra clear water, again experimentation is key. Another trick for windy conditions is attaching two spoons back to back, doubling the weight which allows you to cast further in a head wind, or reaching fish that nobody else can. Having a good camera flash, flashlight, large net, good pliers and of course a camera are all staples for night fishing. Safety is first as night fishing can be quite different than during the day. The amount of glow is a very important detail that you need to pay attention too. With very clear water in the great lakes a lure can be too bright and in stained water you need to keep your lure as visible as possible. Pay attention to the conditions at hand, Water clarity, moon phase (how bright out), manmade lighting, are all factors that change how often you need to recharge the glow. When flashing your lure experiment with the number of casts between flashing, 2-3 casts is normal but in crystal clear water and dark nights you can try 5-6 casts. Again paying attention to what cast you got a bite will tell you something. If its always the first cast then they want a bright glow, if its always the 3-4 cast then they want less glow. Find the pattern and stick with it. Med-Heavy to Heavy baitcasting rods in the 8-10 feet long are the way to go. Maximize the casting distance and minimize the fight times to be sure these fish are released alive and well. Mono vs Braid in years passed 15-17lb mono was the normal however with the introduction of braided line came more sensitivity to feel spoon action and light bites. My current set up uses a Calcutta 251 spooled with 50# Power Pro Super 8 Slick, a great line for casting distance! Watch the conditions especially early in the season, the technology available these days lets you see water temperatures and wind forecasts that can lead to the ideal conditions. Colder water temps pushing up to shore help to bring these fish in tighter, many will stage and after a rainfall they will run up the river leaving the lake portion with less catchable fish, although this is sometimes tough to predict it can help you to put the odds in your favor. At the end of the day simply time on the water will eventually lead you to the best night of the year! Dont forget to visit your local Canadian Tire to pick up many of the items you will need to have a successful and safe trip out. Good Luck! 11. The idea of Chippawa is so we can run the event no matter what the lake does. Crystal beach is subject to wind and limited parking. Port Colborne is the only other option but if its too rough you have to move it or delay. So the tourney will run even if the lake has to be closed (obviously hoping that isn't the case!!!)

  13. BowSlayer - PM sent ... Tonyb - I have a 14' with 25 4 stroke, and bow mount electric ... I know where that Musky was caught ... only a couple weed beds like that on Sotrmy that i found. I was disapointed not to catch a walleye in Stormy ... so i wasn't sure how plentiful they were. All the walleye fisherman that i talked to on restoule only fished the last few hours in the evening. Have you ever caught the suspended eyes in restoule?
