  1. Where are they going to go? Like most big cities many are working at minimum wage and many have no work at all. Canada's last modern age natural disaster was Ft. Mac. There are larger urban neighbourhoods in Houston that all of Fort McMurray. Imagine Toronto under 4 feet of water, I can't but it can happen, Hurricane Hazel, October 1954. If some of the younger guys here don't know much about it Google it. I was born that week while the Hurricane devastated southern Ontario. A warning of things to come? The Hamilton Hurricane's are named that for a reason.
  2. What's a bush cord go for up that way fellow Mariner owner? Cheap down here compared to 35 years ago when everyone installed a wood burner in Hamilton. $100.00 a cord or more then, now about 60 here split and delivered if 5 cords or more.
  3. New Lake Houston, that has to be 30' deep, more? Wowza.
  4. THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL STATEMENT POTUS just said in a press conference 15 minutes ago, "It is the greatest flood, a huge flood in the history of all the floods". I sure hope not. It's sure is bad, it is said the crest will not happen until Wednesday or Thursday. People still trapped on roof tops according to Houston's mayor as I type. Need more help from the Feds. I'll stop right there Art.
  5. I had a Chevy 3500 diesel 20 some odd years ago. I always had to carry 5 gallons around with me as even in southern On. it wasn't available at every filling station. I hate, too strong a word, I strongly dislike with a passion that incessant clanking, cackling, carbuncklement diesel sound. When I was a kid our bedroom was about 20 feet from a bus stop and they sat there idling for what seemed like hours, the sound and smell of the diesel engine reminds me I shared 2 beds with 5 brothers and numerous cousins on weekends. My first ever pay I bought a Pup tent. Haven't heard from you here for a while JoePa, good to see your still with us.
  6. I hope he gets out with one of the members. There isn't fishing in the Hammer area like up north. Open water trolling, there aren't any back bays etc. to cast for anything. Actually boring to me lugging in a dead Walleye but that's what we have, and 1 can feed 4 people. Even Bass on Erie this time of year can be off shore a bit and nothing to see but Wind Turbines and the Hydro and Steel Plant.
  7. There's more than fish in that flood water. He may as well be swimming in an open septic pool. I was amazed to see all the rescues made by individuals that came from far off places with their Jon boats to rescue those unable to walk out. The folks sitting in hip deep water in a Nursing Home really hit me. The most vulnerable are our children and the elderly. I did have to chuckle though when I watched 2 good guys trying to get their deep V glass boat off the trailer in water just covering the bottom of truck tires. Later the CNN reporter was asking on behalf of authorities for those with "flat bottom" boats to come to the Houston area. Thank God the hurricane didn't pan out as expected. Religious statement deleted.
  8. If I was where you are Stoney Lake for sure, take a shot at Burleigh Falls where Stoney starts too. Launch at Burleigh.
  9. I can paint one for you Pike if you have a photo.
  10. Geeze Pike I didn't know they don't make them anymore. The lures I saw must be knock offs, I know folks use them (knockoffs) here successfully. The few I do have my wife mounted in a shadow board for decoration of our place. I should put a tag on it "In case of emergency break glass."
  11. There is nothing that trumps horsepower for towing. What you save on fuel over the years you will spend on maintenance on all mechanical components because of the strain on a smaller power plant.
  12. I know Giardinara, it's not the same. It is dark and tastes unique, more like a pate you can spread. More Eggplant and Zucchini I think. I have to ask her, her memory is better some days. My middle brother and myself make homemade salzeech, fresh and dried, and lonza. No suppresata though. All the kids are women and their husbands couldn't care less unless it's roast beef and potatoes. I found it Caponata! http://theitaliandishblog.com/imported-20090913150324/2012/9/11/sicilian-caponata.html
  13. Yowza, yowza. What a beast. Those Nasty Boys hammer the Walleye here too. Way to go man!! I never have a spare Nasty Boy but you can get them all at Angler Outfitters in Woodstock. Call Bill's Bait in Hamilton as well.
  14. Cappunare, I don't know how to spell Italian, everyone laughs when I speak it. And here I thought they got my joke. Cap-poo-nari. All the fall veggies cut up and laid out on the table on a sheet and salted. Then in jars with veg oil and garlic cloves. Calabrese thing I think from my Mom's American side of the Familia. I don't jar anything since the first time I tried and lost everything when the lids popped. I roast the Shepherd peppers, clean skin and seeds off, put them in one of those water go, Spaghetti no things and cover them with a clean mapina and put weight on the colander to drain the oil off. It can be bitter with some peppers. Then I put them in good freezer bags, flatten them and freeze them. When I take them out to thaw I then put veg oil, cloves of garlic and some fresh basil. In the jars was always better as the garlic and basil got into the peppers and the oil was to die for slopping it up with crusty Calabrese bread. What do you call what you clean the plate with, scarpetta? Little shoe. On a positive note my Godson is everything Italian. He just remodelled his first home and put arches in the rooms, 5 different ceramic tile designs in and bought 2 chamenta Lions for the front driveway and a huge fountain with a statue in it. He spend hours with his Nona learning the recipes, what recipes? A bit of this some of that and a dash of the other stuff. I have to laugh when someone asks me for a recipe. The first ingredient is from your Heart.
  15. Sometimes I get "thanks" usually it's "Is that all?" I need to better my group of friends and relatives. I was once invited to my brothers in the mid 80's as he scored some Lobster. I cooked them and the corn and as we were leaving he told me what I owed him, I swear to God. That was the first and last time I went to his or any of his 3 ex wives for dinner. You can't choose your relatives. Now I went and got myself all upset and I need y rest for fishing on Erie tomorrow for Wally's.
  16. Believe it or not I really don't like Porchetta. I will eat it warm though, if I have to. I love Pork and I have no idea why not Porchetta. Maybe too much black pepper. Ketch, Mom would take a few days at least to do the Cappunare. I always wonder if the old recipes are going to be lost forever here. I personally kick my self for not paying attention. I also roast 3 bushels of Shepard Peppers every Sept. Then give 90% away. Most Gen X ers csn't boil water. All my nieces and nephews fall into that category because my Bro's and Sis in laws can't boil water either. 4 meals a week were take out and 3 at my parents or my home.
  17. I use a knapsack that was on sale at CTC years ago for 15 bucks. It has exterior and interior pockets and it holds 3 Plano boxes plus whatever I throw in the bottom of it. For whatever I am going for that's the boxes I put in it. I love the 2 straps it has as I can sling it over my shoulder and have 2 free hands for rods and my lunch bag/cooler. Can't beat it. Plus when it's MT it's a knapsack.
  18. PM me. Hoovers is miles away from Selkirk. I live in Selkirk.
  19. Congrats on the new baby. I first started my local fishing on Niapenco. I always thought it was an Indian name but it is the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority. Take a drive to Haldimand and launch at the south end of Kohler Rd. and catch Smallmouth on every other cast in the little bay using tube jigs or imitation Leeches or real Leeches from Bills Bait on Upper James. Google it. 45 mins from the Hammer.
  20. If I knew how my Mom did her Fall vegies I could become a veterinarian. Her Capunare (sic) tasted like steak. All Fall veggies on the table salted and drawn of water then canned in veggie oil. A lost recipe in my Family sadly. Do you know how to do it Kettchinany???
  21. What place? No pics? I don't have ESPN.
  22. Yep. All my parents Grandchildren are spending my inheritance. However I'd rather they see someone enjoy it while they are still alive.
  23. I saw a bumper sticker once that said "If there is life after death I want to come back as my parents grandchild". Congrats.
  24. Age has a tendency to diminish reflexes and thus reaction time. Just a fact. I haven't ridden in 20 years and miss it greatly. But you have to know when to quit for your own and more important others safety. Just like crime it's something you don't start late in life.
  25. Excellent dear Sir. Like Moosebunk said I hope to have someone to do the same for me, soon. I took a 40 something year young with me for 3 days fishing, I'm grooming him to be my guy, I hope. I showed him how to clean a fish and he cleaned all the fish for us old timers and did a great job. A great start. By the way were you able to stay dry out in the boat?
