Anyone got the scoop on what happen at Thornbury????
Old Ironmaker replied to misfish's topic in General Discussion
Certainly this is sad to most all fishermen (persons), most folks couldn't care less with all the humans lost to earthquakes, hurricanes and nut cases in the last month. -
Just wetting a line with your Grand Son can't be measured, priceless. Fish or no fish. I have to say I'm a bit jealous. Have fun snag. I now have 9 nieces, all are girly girls that won't touch a fish. One was born just the other day, I am going to try and get her on the water ASAP.

Saturday Fall Hamilton Bay fishing Dream?
Old Ironmaker replied to Raycaster's topic in General Discussion
I would suggest trolling what is referred to as the West Side open cut. Warm city water is discharged there from Stelco. Many Salmon and even Pike in the 90's were trapped in the bay water strainers there when the bay was a cesspool as far back as the 70's. Because of the warm water they seemed to school there. It is located at the south east corner along the dock wall where Stelco and International Harvester property merged. Don't think about eating a fish from the Bay, please. -
Does anyone have a link to an Obit for Sue if there is one? I am sure many here would like to donate if there is a charity the Family wants to support.

It sure must be nice to catch some quality fish to wind down from a hard days work. Living the dream Big Dave. They hardly miss a step building here in Southern On. all winter long. The last 2 we didn't have frost below a foot or 2. We dug a pals basement this past January and poured without a problem. The 40 gallon fire drum and some Jack D was nice, after the work was done of course.

Yep, there is always someone in the field that will disagree with the scientists that don't know what end of a framing hammer to hold. A very good site for the discussion is buildingscience.com. I meant to say "insulating, not insulting." Though a few insults were tossed about. All in good fun though. Mike is a real good guy, I was surprised to learn earlier on in his TV career most of the money for the remodels came out of his own pocket. He is a lot smaller on TV than in real life.

Are they all closed because the gates are closed or no fishing posted? I would try Cootes Paradise. Less windy and have been told there are gamefish in there now as the Carp traps have worked. I would be wary of the wind in the bay. I have seen some mean water in there this time of the year especially. My department at the plant bordered the bay. East winds seemed to be worse than a west wind. Be safe and good luck, report back.

I have to say she's lookin' good Dave. Those invisible Minions you hide out of camera view are doing a bang up job. That view of the Norden Lites from inside is much more than a million dollar view, it's in the billion range. I can't agree with that Lucas. I could go on for pages talking about heat/cooling loss. In my experience the difference between R-24 bat insulation and spraying in a closed cell makes a huge difference in savings on heating and cooling. The other thing that Mr. Holmes stresses is to insulate both sides of the building envelope, I can not for the life of me remember the term as I type. Imagine a large or even small home that has bat insulation between the wall studs. There is virally no resistance value to dimensional lumber. Add up all the wall 2x's and you may be surprised how much of the house has only the R value of the dimensional lumber. Having a place on the lake and the lake side has rather large windows and an 8.5' patio door, a single pane window is something like R-2, even a triple pane window might be R-6. If I remember the term for completely enveloping a building I will post it. Oldtimers moment. I was in the Sunroom business and we sold some products through Home Depot as installation services contractors after I took my pension and not to name drop but had a couple of cold ones and chicken wings with Mr. Holmes on a few occasions and insulting was one of the topics of conversation besides fishing. He was working with HD at the time, 2006. For anyone that is new here and has not read back 30 pages it has to be stated that Dave has a few dozen of those little Minions helping him, he will deny it but there is no way 1 man has done that solo, no way whatsoever!!! Either that or Dave is an Alien.

Ah Cliff, our deepest sorrows for you. But she has no pain any longer and is at peace.

Dodging big pike while walleye fishing.
Old Ironmaker replied to limeyangler's topic in General Discussion
Getting stats for your personal videos must be very helpful and to me amazing. Man when I hit the workplace our computers were the size of a Football stadium and all they were was giant adding machines. Yes Staffies are my favorite breed too. Ferra was brindle on white with a black eye patch, what a beauty she was. Smarter than the average Bear too. To the minute she would go to the TV every night at 5:30 and whine until I turned it to Wild Kingdom then she would watch the animals for 1/2 an hour, if a Big Cat came on she lost it. During commercials she would go to her dishes and have a snack. Each and every single day if we were home, except weekends. I taped shows on the VHS and she would again go to the TV and let me know she wanted to watch her show on weekends. How scary smart is that? That was mid 80's when the Pit Bull frenzy began. People thought she was a human eating Land Shark Pit Bull. Idiots. I miss her so much I never did get another Puppy. Maybe now that I'm home everyday, who knows. He or she can take me for a walkie. Keep them vids coming mate. -
Any waterfowlers in SW Ontairo ? Obviously NF
Old Ironmaker replied to Freshtrax's topic in General Discussion
Any of you "birdheads" are more than welcome to come out here for a hunt. The birds come here right out front of our placeon the north shore of Erie by the thousands. Everything from Goldeneye to Bufflehead, I called them Buffalohead's before I was educated in my Duck breeds. I don't hunt but a few pals do come to our place every fall to sit on the beach or the rock outcropping in a blind and get more than a few. I personally don't hunt any longer because the hunting seems to be best on the most miserable days. It's nice and warm and dry in the cottage with my Binoculars at the ready. Just PM me. -
Dodging big pike while walleye fishing.
Old Ironmaker replied to limeyangler's topic in General Discussion
Hey there Bro. I am happy you don't have a stupid stick (Cigarette)in your hand. I am really surprised those Walleye were still in the area with a big Essox hanging around. If I were alone I might be tempted to toss the hooked Pic in for Mr. Pike, but would never do it, maybe 30 years ago before I knew better. By the way 8 minutes is a perfect time for a video. I find I don't watch many that are more than 8 to 10 minutes long or fast forward to the last few minutes, just my take. I have to ask. When you find yourself talking to the Puppy for minutes on end do you ever hear him answer you in English or whatever language of the origin country the breed is from? If he does answer they have meds for that. I had a Staffordshire Terrier that had an English accent. Johnny D -
Port Severn Accommadation suggestions.

Thank you for each and every reply. We are planning on booking musky's for a night. The desk clerk said we can book for more if we wish. $15.00 a day for a slip including launching, that is a very good price and a nice room is on for $79.00 a night mid October. Those are fantastic prices. The 4 of us stayed in a nice new trailer at Otter Creek Marina this summer in Port Burwell, 100 a night plus tax per person not including slips! Not cheap, nice but not cheap. Bonus was we limited out on nice Pics every time we went out. It was the first time we had to cull Walleye on Erie everyday. We actually had to had a fry up before we could go back out on the lake more than once. HoooRaahh!! Not related but I have to report we went out for Smallies here and lost count at 2 limits. The largest was 23", buddy says 6 lbs. because he caught it I say a bit over 4 maybe, forgot I had a scale in my boat. All came out of 25 to 30 feet of water. Dropshot live shiners. Pumpkin Seed tubes as well as just trolling with Black and Silver floating Rappala's with snap on weight. They were hungry today. All went back, had we got a few Silvers or Greenies I would have kept a few for tonight. -

Man that place sure is "The fits a class place" kind of establishment. "Befits a class establishment" that is translated to Hamiltonian. If my wife knew I stayed there for a night or two fishing I would have to take her back to The Harbor Beach Marriot in Lauderdale, $450.00 USD per night!!!! I got them down to 300. I'm looking at something more like a Motel 6 but thanks anyway Grimsby. I am going to check out Musky's ReefRunner, more my speed for a fishing trip. -
Lake Nipissing Walleye violations net $8,600 in fines
Old Ironmaker replied to farsider's topic in General Discussion
I just read that on MNR Watch. I'm not a river fisher guy anymore, I have to ask why the authorities don't blitz these commonly known spots of obvious infractions every year. Everyone here knows where and when and have known for years, don't the authorities know as well? Maybe they have in the past, some of you guys might know if the Ministry has been pro active. I don't know if more violators have been charged and convicted or Social Media enables us to hear of what goes on that we never had access to before. I hope it's both. It seems there are recent fines doled out weekly. I have to laugh when a poacher that never had a licence is banned from fishing for a year, Yea right. "No buddy I can't poach anymore with you because I am banned from poaching for a year." If you don't subscribe to MNR Watch newsletter I again recommend you do. -

Hmmm, good question GL. The last time I was there was 82' so won't remember where we fished anyway, will all be new. I'll check Rawley out thanks. -
krr, you must have done some digging to bring up a 6 year old thread. As for the lake you sure hammered them, congrats. People do read this forum, regularly. But usually don't get too worked up over a 6 year old thread. Why not introduce yourself as a new member? Welcome to OFC by the way. Art, most of the forums I frequent have a rule that threads 6 months old can't be revisited unless by the OP. I don't know if that is good or a bad thing.

Wow, anyone know the circumstances? Just Saturday we were at the club and this guy came in and he was a Tom Petty clone and we all remarked how uncanny the resemblance. He had a terrible voice that sounded great if that makes any sence. Sad. condolences to his fans, friends and family.

A lifelong pal and I want to revisit our youth and spend a night or two fishing Port Severn area in the next few weeks. A Motel/Hotel recommendation is appreciated. A Marina where I can leave the boat in and stay would be perfect. Done are the days we would drive up in the dark and drive back in the dark to Hamilton. Any heads up is much appreciated. Johnny D

Old Ironmaker replied to ecmilley's topic in General Discussion
Alcohol, bullet proof youthfulness and water late at night. A formula for disaster. I think we can all say we've been there done that at least once when we were unstoppable and young. Condolences to the unfortunate friends and family. A waste of life, just a waste, tragic. It will happen again unfortunately, and probably sooner than later. -
I can't quantify it right this minute. We were told by a well renowned environmentalist by the name Suzuki that a cross country flight in a passenger jet airliner emits as much C02 as a modern integrated steel plant does in a month. Multiply that with the massive numbers of passenger jets in the air every minute of everyday. That was at an AISI conference I attended many years ago. We are all good stewards of our environment as long as it is convenient and economical.

I love Nova Scotia and we were contemplating moving to the area you are 17 years ago. That was until I realized they get 8 months of winter, 2 months of Hurricanes and 2 months of paradise. We do not enjoy rain, snow and cold so we sucked out and bought in Florida. -
I always wonder when I hear of these new electric vehicles what is the cost of KWH/100K? I caught a bit of TV where they were showing the electric Formula 1 cars that hit 300KM/HR.

Dave I am surprised that the insulation is basically what code is here in Southern On. Heat loss will be high with all the gorgeous windows you have. I would have thought you would have gone with a closed cell spray where you are.

Livin' the dream Peter. Good on you. Many people fantasize and wish themselves to sleep. Wake the next day and force themselves to do something they do not like and sometimes even despise. I took my pension at age 45, everyone thought I was out of my mind. I made big money and had to deal with big numbskulls and the world coming to the end day in and day out. I could have made a million more staying 10 more years. So freeking what. It's been 17 years and I don't regret that decision to get out while I still could with most of my fingers and toes. Moved to the lake and we can fish from our own little beach, or swim or do didley squat. Plus we haven't missed a meal. Enjoy life while you still can, good luck to you and thanks for the invite. You never know, my sis and brother in law just bought a beautiful property on Mahon Bay for what is maybe 6 years of property taxes in Toronto.
