  1. To answer Ch312, if you did a total renovation without a permit, the municipality could order you to open up every inch of the walls to allow inspection of the structural, electrical, mechanical and plumbing elements. They of course could also haul your butt into court for not getting a permit. We have even had a least two houses built illegally that were hidden from the roadways that were discovered. In both cases the judges ordered them bulldozed because there were serious breaches of the planning by-laws or environmental/health unit regulations. One was estimated to cost over $ 200,000. to build. With regard to small airports, they are indeed federally regulated and the provincial building codes and planning regulations do not for the most part apply. There have been some minor exceptions, but most buliding inspectors who've laid charges for hangars built without a permit were promptly laughed out of court by the judge/J.o.P.. With regard to the original thread, as a former building "techie" I am wondering how a footing would fail causing a collapse in a wind storm. With the possible exception of horizontal silo's, most footings are below ground. The fact that the customer is willing to pay for the material to reconstruct leaves me wondering about the original design. Is the customer getting an insurance settlement that he is not owning up to? I think like some one else has suggested, I'd make sure that my staff labour costs including E.I., WSIB, CPP and any other costs are covered and then consider eating the costs of my own time, labour and profit. This would be especially true if the customer is not mad at you and came back to you in a spirit of fair reconciliation. The goodwill that it should create would probably pay dividends in the future not just with his business but also with others when he tells them about it.
  2. The problem with C-373 is that while its language may seem innocuous, it lets itself open to some "anti" minded judge at some point interpreting normal fishing and hunting practices as being cruel and illegal. Then it cold create problems for hunters and fishers. Any act must clearly specify that it is intended to ensure the welfare of any animal normally under the control and care of humans. It must exclude any animal that is captured or harvested from the wild. S-213 just aims to update the penalties for cruelty which I think we all agree are antiquated as they stem from the early 1900's.
  3. I think Headhunter is thinking of Horwood Lake Lodge which is located at the end of Hardiman Bay and is accessible via the old Kukatush logging road. Horwood Lake Outpost is accessible by water only ( unless there's a new road that I don't know about) and the owner will tell you where he has his docking and launch priveleges. You come in via the Palomar road off highway 101 to the North end of the lake not to far from the dam. That road is usually pretty good as the cottagers pay to have it graded once or twice a year. You then go up the lake 11 miles to the Outpost. I used to love to fish the mouth of the Swaysey and had good luck there. Also some luck in front of the Woman River falls where the river enters Horwood. Just remember that the Timmins area can be quite cool in September so take you woolies along.
  4. If you read the fine print on the pumps, there's usually a sticker that says what temperature the pumps are calibrated for. This means that at colder temperatures the pumps give you a little less than what's showing on the gauge to allow for that expansion. It's suposed to give us a little more in very warm weather. Yah, right and maybe I believe in the tooth fairy too! IMHO it's another way for the gas companies to sc**w the little guy.
  5. Like many of you I may disagree with some of their stands on issues but if you don't have a good strong organization representing hunting and fishing views, just watch how quick the ante's and P3TA's of the world will get their way with the politicians. It's the large urban areas that provide votes for them. Just ask any farmer how well their views are taken at Queens Park. Running an organization such as that simply takes money in today's world and you try finding good people for little money. The salaries of may corporate CEO's make OFAH's look like peanuts and I'm sure there are no stock options at OFAH. The future of our favourite pastime is in our hands and if we're not careful there are more than a few people out there who can be swayed by pictures of animals in traps or fish on hooks to donate their momey to anti causes. I am a regular member of OFAH and do not sit on any of their boards or committees. It's like insurance, it's not perfect but at some point you may need it, another necessary "evil" of life.
  6. I am survey technician by college schooling and when I was at college years ago we were taught that every lake and navigable waterway has an automatic 66 ft. reserve along its shore from the high water mark. In later years a lot of the responsibility and title for these right-of-ways were ceeded to the provinces who subsquently ceeded them to the municipalities. In some cases the municipalities closed up these allowances and sold them to adjoining property owners. Since then and in particlarly along the Great Lakes shores and any rivers feeding into them, many of the nearby First Nations have claimed that the aforementioned actions were illegal and these allowances are now part of the many land claim settlements that they are asking for. God only knows when that might get settled.
  7. We've found that the FRS radio's are OK over longer distances in relatively flat areas such as lakes. Through the bush, they aren't worth it. Even the ones that claim they're up to 20 Km don't work worth a hoot in hilly country. Where we go around Gogama, a lot of the cottagers still use CB's. Their range is better, but infortunately you still have to deal with the hillbillies from the South skipping across the airwaves with their powerfull units and making them difficult to use at times. And again trying to find a fairly powerful portable CB is a challenge. These radios also seem to have fallen out of favour since the Smokey and the Bandit days and are harder to find.
  8. Just curious and wondering if any of our members have ever participated in any of its various derbies/tournaments and what their experiences were like?
  9. There is a company in Parry Sound , Found Aircraft, that is building a plane that is very close to the DeHavilland DH-2 Beaver. Many companies that need an aircraft comparable to the Twin Otter are buying the Cessna "Caravan". It's a single engine job that comes close to the Twin. For those of you who pine for "The Beaver" not just beaver, there is a website that shows the history of just about very one built, where it currently is or what has happened to it. I'll post its name later, Google just won't find it right now. Found it: it's www.dhc-2.com and it uses the name Beaver Tails
  10. FYI, at Wal-Mart we are specifically instructed to ask the customer to sign an unsigned card and also ask for one piece of government issued photo I.D.. If we don't take this "Due diligence" in these cases, the company and not the credit card company is on the hook for the loss and they do try to prove it's our fault.
  11. I really want to try it from my new 14 ft. wide body Naden tin can but it's turned upside down on the trailer in the back yard and I'm not sure if the impeller on the water pump of my 30 hp. could suck up and melt the snow fast enough to keep the motor cool.
  12. I work in Sports at Wal-Mart and that's definitely a "screw up". Somebody was given some "mark-down" money and screwed up the price adjustment when entering it in the computer. It's probably been caught by now so you'd better call ahead to see if it's still available at $ 40.00 .
  13. Just for your info, a part time medical records clerk picked a Timmy's at the outlet on the lower level of our hospital of Wednesday and "Bingo" a new Toyota. Also when I read the Timmins Daily Press website yesterday, apparently someone up there also picked up a Toyata. That's 2 gone. I'll win when the Leafs win the Stanley Cup. That means probably not in my lifetime!
  14. Believe it or not but both natural gas and propane have a certain amount of water in them. That heater is the source of the moisture in your garage. That's why most of what comes out of a natural gas furnace vent is steam. Try going to a dryer source such as electric. I've used two of those little electric plug in type heaters with good success and they don't impact too much on the hydro bill unless you use them a great deal. They usually have termostatic controls on them. Of course if you do any work involving combustible fuel vapours, you want to stay away from any sparks or sources of open flame.
  15. There was a fellow in our area who pumped septic tanks for a living. One year he gave out pens as an advertising gimmick. It had the motto " Your crap is our bread and butter" Another year the pens said " We're number 1 in the number 2 business."
  16. Have to admit I saw this one in Reader's Digest but it's worth re-telling. A engineer dies and arrives at the pearly gates. St.Peter takes a look in the register and says " Sorry, Bub, you not destined for here. Down you go!" About six months later, God calls up Satan and asks " How's it going?" Satan says" Man it's just great down here. That engineer you sent us has designed and installed air conditioning, escalators and fire supression sytems. We couldn't ask for better." God goes back to St.Peter and says " Will you check out that engineer that you sent to Hell about 6 months ago. St.Peter does and says " Oh my Lord, I made a terrible mistake, he should be up here with us" God calls Satan back and says " Hey, we made a mistake, that engineer should be up here with us. I want you to send him back right away and if you don't I'll sue." "Yah" says Satan, " and where are you going to find a lawyer?"
  17. I don't know it this is the spot but I'll tell you of one area that's close to that description. If the church was on the far right hand corner ( N-E corner ) of an intersection and was very close to the road allowance, then it might have been the old Zion-Amabel United churh at the intersection of Bruce County Roads # 14 & 8. At that time, 14 might still have been gravel. It's paved now. County 8 is the road between Hepworth and Sauble Beach and has been paved for years. If you keep going North on the side road ( # 14 ends at # 8 ) you come to the Sauble River about 1.5 Km. North of the church.
  18. I believe the combined federal and provincial sales and other taxes in Ontario on a litre of gas add up to about 36 cents a litre. So take that away and there's your 75 cents a litre. In the States, there are virtually no such taxes with the possible exception on California which may have some that amount only to a couple of cents a litre.
  19. You have a couple of options depending on where you buy your license. Firstly, Crank Bait is right, don't buy it till after January 1st. If you buy just before your birthday and you only have a one year sticker, the sticker expires on Dec. 31st of that year. When you buy it, $ 6.00 of the cost is for your Outdoors Card that will be good for 3 years. If you buy your license "on-line" or from an Ontario Government Service Centre, you can get a sticker on the card that's good for 3 years also. That would be until Dec. 31st, 2010. If you buy it from a tackle shop or a place like Canadian Tire or Wal-Mart ( yes, our store in Owen Sound sells them, some do, some don't), you can only get a one year sticker and must go to a retailer and get an annual sticker put on in each of the following years. ( 2009 & 2010 ). Either way you have to pay for the Outdoors Card. If you buy from a retailer, we give you a temporary license so that you can fish as soon as you walk out the door and the actual card comes later in the mail. Once you're 18 don't get caught fishing without your license on you or very close nearby in your tackle box. The CO's will not accept "It's at home" and will charge you for sure.
  20. Hey Bernie never mind letting them out on Queen's Park front lawn. Lock them in the legislature with the house "in session" Unfortunately, the only the way the Spring hunt will come back is if a cabinet minister's child or grandchild is mauled or killed. Then, the hunt would be back so fast, even the anti's couldn't stop it. Besides, given enough time and their ever increasing population, the bears will start moving further and further South and someone important will be hurt by them and then watch out.
  21. Hey Taper, sent you a PM. Let me know via this posting if you don't get it.
  22. Please correct me if I'm wrong but the duties charged by the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency apply on any retail purchase over $ 40.00 US in value. NAFTA only applies to large sales of bulk traded commodities between companies in the two countries. Below the $ 40.00 value there's no duty. Usually no matter what carrier you use ( US/Canada Post, FedEx, UPS or any other), they must collect the duty on behalf of the government. I believe the duty on general merchandise such a fishing tackle is around 35%. Recently a friend bought something worth $90.00 US on e-Bay. Luckily the seller, an American, knew this and declared the value at $ 40.00. The item came in duty free.
  23. I may get censored by the forum administrators for this but don't these gutless wonders make you want to puke. I was willing to give these guys the benefit of the doubt till some time ago because of the problems they inherited from the previous government. Lately, however, they have proven that they do not deserve to be re-elected. IMO this about the fourth issue that they have really screwed up on. When will politicians start putting the public good ahead of getting their sorry asses re-elected. ( Boy, isn't that a pipe dream.)
  24. On our 2 week annual trip into the Shining Tree area, my partner and I do catch some smallies. We aren't greedy and three or four meals of fish is all we want during that trip. He does all the filleting. The smallies are used for one specific meal which is our fish and chips supper that my partner insists on and/or for one breakfast. For more "formal" dining of course, the walleye reigns supreme.
  25. I'm presuming that you "had" to have insurance because you financed the purchase through the dealer. That means you may not be able to reduce the coverage of the principal items of the the loan until it is paid off. Your PL/PD may be reduceable if it's something like $ 10,000,000. I pay $ 176. yearly for a 27 year old 16' Giesler cedar strip, a 27 year old trailer and 2000- 30 h.p. Johnson and $ 2,000,000. liability (PL/PD). The only one that truly matters to me is the darned liability part because that's what can hurt you a lot more than just the loss of the equipment if you are found at fault in an accident. I also live in Ontario and presume that you do to. Good luck! We all just love insurance companies.
