  1. Terry, all I know is Barbie didn't get stuck in slush that day... :whistling:
  2. hey, if I knew how to update it I would. Now that picture is alsmost like an antique. That was a LONG time ago a bunch of us got together on Cooks Bay and I borrowed my neighbour's daughter's barbie sled (is it still considered borrowing if they don't know or consent?)
  3. you're on! The first time I got out this past winter I did the 1 km walk because thats where all the huts were. Somebody told me try much closer to shore, forget the walk to the shantytown, and guess what, it worked! Because its a short walk I'm gonna fish in style. Got the hut, bought a Coleman this summer, gonna whip up some bacon/eggs and coffee while you drill the holes (don't worry, got the gas auger too). Only thing I don't have is a proper toboggan - see my avatar shot taken at the Simcoe GTG 7 or 8 years ago.
  4. you think that's bad, I had a samsquatch do the same thing to me - flying dropkick, one hairy foot to the face (thank goodness he used his foot)
  5. that fish is ridiculous!
  6. I'm thinking the bike will be a nuisance on most days...having said that, I have nothing better to offer. I walk, but no more than 1 km each way. Last winter I found some perch spots close to shore that produced well so this year it won't even be a 1 km walk
  7. wow I never would have considered doing such a thing. The leftover mixed fuel I have from the summer is being used to start bonfires in the back yard! Maybe I should toss a few litres in the truck...although that would make my next fire less spectacular
  8. Perfect...finally someone who knows what I'm going through. Because its my first gps, I'm trying to figure out if its "user" error (ie is there a way to fine tune the unit that I'm missing). Sounds like I do have it hooked up right and its a "you get what you pay for" scenario. Don't get me wrong, playing with it in my garage I love it, just don't know if it should be more detailed than what I'm getting out of it. Pete, try out the L Ontario setting and let me know if that made things better for you
  9. maybe because you have the DSI you get the 1 foot contours? When I zoom right in I see basically no contours (maybe 1?)on the screen.
  10. thanks Scugog. The chip I was given has a blue navionics sticker and then white sticker over that that says Navionics Elite Bundle MSD/NEB - 2. It has far more lakes than I was expecting (but maybe a little less detail than I was expecting after seeing Scugog's hds 7), I thought this thing only came with Trent Severn but I've got all kinds of lakes.
  11. I haven't fished musky after dark but I have 2 thoughts - without the light on you'd never know about those 2 follows so if you only figure 8 when you see a fish keep the light on. If you figure 8 after every cast I say shut the light off. Could you imagine a figure 8 fish in the dark didn't even know it was there? Would be awesome (and a bit scary)
  12. so got it all hooked up on the boat tonight. Played around a bit more and found that Kawarthas actually show much more detail when looking at the "L Ontario" setting rather than the "Southern Ontario" setting. Still definitely nowhere near the detail as Scugog's HDS 7 though with the one foot contours!
  13. yup nice to have some good reports/discussions before the inevitable period of "cabin fever" sets in and we all look at each other kinda funny
  14. that is the perfect ending, will give you plenty to think about until next June. Gotta love going out on a high note
  15. had to drop the pants to release the jumbo you say :whistling:
  16. those fish are so big they're ugly. Lake Simcoe gluttons!
  17. wow what variety. Can't say I've ever caught an incidental salmon before
  18. thanks for the input. Once the kids are in bed I might fiddle with it a bit more and be a bit more specific about what the contours are
  19. yipes...clicked on that link and scared myself. Maybe someday I'll give that update a shot but not quite there yet on the tech side of things
  20. doesn't seem right closing it down in 80 degree weather! Some great photos there
  21. ...that's what I had guessed. Small hidden one is for the unit, bigger one fits into computer. Now I just wonder if I have to have the small one inside the big one when I plug it into computer. I hate technology...but as soon as it gets me on more fish I'll get over it
  22. Just got my first GPS/Sonar combo and I'm playing with it in the garage trying to figure it out. Even the chip threw me for a loop...the thing is far too big for the port, then I notice a smaller chip can be taken out of the bigger one. It fits. What is the purpose of the bigger chip that holds the tiny chip that fits? After a phonecall to Scugog I begin to get this thing figured out. Man there are a ton of different regions on this thing. I thought it was just supposed to come with Trent Severn? Its got all kinds of other spots, including Elephant, Jack, Kashagawigamog, Chandos etc. Wonder if I was given the wrong chip? Also, when I went fishing with Scugog last week his unit (HDS 7) was showing us 1 foot contours. Looking at my unit its like 10 foot contours! I assume it gets better than this (if I read my manual) or is that what you get for a lower priced unit?
  23. wow that first largemouth is FAT
  24. i should clarify...cranks that can get down 20 feet, then go drag them through 19 f.o.w.
  25. right now still the blade baits, when the water is down in the 50's, something big that can get down 20 feet (big cranks) or deeper - bulldawg? bondy?
