  1. Just got home.Couch off Airport Rd is GLARE ICE..but we never lost any ice. 8-10 inches everywhere. No water on the top anywhere...everything has froze up tight. Someone even parked there truck on the ice. However I don't for a second recommend anybody should do that. It had some seepage under it when I was coming off..hopefully there truck doesn't go through before they come off.
  2. Thx for sharing Emil. The smiling faces in the pictures say it all Sounds like an excellent holiday to me. And you are correct. Small town folks are just that much nicer...in so many ways. It really is a different world. BTW if we get some safe ice sometime this winter I think I need another trip out with you on Simcoe so I can get a few whities and lakers. Still learning the ropes..so I will take all the help I can get
  3. Good job Bruce I wish you had went to the spot I told you about. It's been a slaughter there. I'll be out there again Sunday. I just hope the front doesn't shut them down or move them. Hope you enjoyed your Brekkie this morning.
  4. I just use whatever barrel swivels I can get. I don't buy the expensive ones...but I don't buy junk either. But I primarily fish perch and crappie through the ice and never fish real deep. Better swivels might be more important if you are fishing deeper water or targeting larger fish...which would mean your running line heavier then the 4LB I use. Something that really helps with both line twist and memory is stretching your line. When I first drop my line to the bottom I peel maybe an extra 10 feet off the spool. Then I grab my line..maybe a 2 foot section at a time and stretch it. Repeat this for the whole length of line you have reaching down to the bottom. Then throw your lure back down the hole and reel all this stretched line back onto your spool. It gets rid of all the memory and if you do it carefully I think it gets rid of most of twist too.
  5. That's terrible news Beansie. The little time I spent with Jack over the past couple of years was always enjoyed and something I looked forward too. His sense of humor and wit was good for the soul. My heartfelt condolences to Jackie and all Jack's family and friends.
  6. Bruce...you got out and got some fresh air and a few fish...AND got to torture use with some fish fry porn. Sounds like good times to me I can't wait to get down your way for my yearly winter smelt expedition. But with this mild weather coming I know it won't be anytime soon.
  7. Do they make baitcaster's that will handle 4LB line
  8. Well done. Like the hidden OFC logo
  9. Out with a buddy today on Couch. Mid morning I landed a 8 inch perch with a algae covered stick coming out of it's back. Once the ball of algae was pulled off it was actually a tag. The tag was orange and it had a phone number on it. I released the perch after showing it to my buddy and I never had anything to write the Phone # down with so of course I forgot it. Does anyone know if this is an Orillia perch festival tagged perch or a MNR tag. I'm just curious. BTW there was an open sore where it was stuck in the fish. Didn't seem very good for the perches health.Do these tags eventually fall out?
  10. I have found the best way to reduce line twist is to tie on a barrel swivel about 12-18 inches above your lure. Gets rid of pretty much all the line twist you get from jigging.
  11. I'm not a bass fisherman but I get a bunch sometimes when I'm targeting crappies. And you are correct when they are on there beds they are suicidal. I've never tried a dill pickle though Some people will do anything to make a buck.
  12. Debbe tried crock pot stuffing last year...man does it turn out good. And Debbe always had great stuffing before trying this.Great time saver and now we can have stuffing even if we don't have a bird with it. Only downside is I AM PICKING at it ALL the time. It's about 1/3 gone before it gets anywhere near the table. As a matter of fact that is what I am doing right now...supervising the crock pot to ensure a quality product for Xmas dinner tonight BTW nice looking bird you got going there.
  13. I'm worse then the kids. When my son and daughter where small, I was the one up BEFORE 5:28. The only light on in the house would be the tree lights plugged in and me waiting with a coffee...smiling and staring at the tree...just WAITING for the show to begin :thumbsup_anim: Most years the presents where unwrapped well before the sun came up. Enjoy it while you can...they grow up real fast.
  14. Not festive but reflective. My favorite Christmas song.
  15. Thx Cliff. That was nice to hear this morning when I checked in here.
  16. Like I keep telling you Cliff...all you have to do is PM me or call...I can be there is 60-70 minutes...IF YOU NEED HELP DOING ANYTHING. However I can probably be there in 30-40 minutes...if fishing is involved For all the times you have helped me with things, I'd be more then happy to return a few favors. Also I think Debbe and Sue need to paint a few more wine glasses for next year Debbe and I are both planless on the 27th/28th. Anything need done or any fish need caught then. Happy Holiday's to you and Sue.
  17. Looking good Bruce. Happy Holidays to you and your gang. Question though...that bottle of laker in the last pic? Is that for lubricating the baker or is it a cookie ingredient?
  18. Brian...not a huge fan of Blue Cheese either...but I really like it with the spinach salads we make. Some mandarin orange wedges, cocktail tomatoes quartered, sliced cucumber with just a small amount of crushed butter toffee peanuts sprinkled on the top, about a tablespoon size chuck of blue cheese per salad broken up and spread around with just a splash of balsamic vinaigrette. Lots of different textures and tastes. Stole the whole idea from a spinach salad I had at the KEG last Christmas. Has become a family favorite.
  19. My fav steak as well. I like med rare too...but a shade closer to medium. Throw a Thai shrimp skewer on the BBQ with it, and your good to go. We are doing prime rib roast ourselves. Age it in the fridge for 5-7 days on a wire rack then roast at 200 F until the meat thermometer says 136. Some roasted veggies, parsnips, rutabaga, onions, sweet potatoes and some chunks of freah pinapple... marinated in a toasted cumin seed, lemon, olive oil brown sugar sauce. And a small spinach and blue cheese salad. Oh and perhaps a few bottles of vino to toast in the New Year and wash supper down. Then up at 5AM for walleye opener on Scugog.
  20. Gotta agree..if you wanna be irresponsible on early ice...well who is going to stop you. But take your grandchild along...your an idiot.
  21. X2 for me No one current to today has played the game like #4 Bobby Orr. Retired at 28 cause his knees where screwed. Never played an NHL game with good legs...cause he already had knee troubles in Junior. I can't even begin to imagine Orr coming to the NHL in good health and having a 20 year career like a lot of other defencemen. No one else measures up.
  22. Yep...what de man said. I'll be couching it in the AM
  23. Heard alot about these suits. Went to Cdn Tire in north Oshawa today...none in the store. Never got any to start with. South Oshawa store had one to begin with and so did the closest Whitby store. So for the 3 stores I might go to they had a grand total of 2 suits for the sale. Needless to say Debbe has had to listen to me carp about Cdn Tire all afternoon Good luck to anyone who finds some...and please report what you think of them.
  24. My bro told my wife he is going out of pefferlaw tomorrow. He doesn't have any ice fishing gear at all...so I am assuming one of the hut guys is taking him out. I have not been able to confirm this with him. Anybody know of any activity in that area? I was up that way last weekend and the ice there looked like crap. Maybe my wife got the message from my bro mixed up too...I don't know.
