Bait casting reels

This picture reminded me of my first rod and reel ( I learned to fish with a bamboo pole, hook, line , sinker and a float) I received

a Shakspeare Wonder reel when I was 12 years old complete with a spring steel rod... What was yours ?

Shakespeare Sportcast direct drive  model EH on a Utica Tournament Taper fibreglass rod  made by Horrocks-Ibottson of Utica NY. bought it in 1961 in St John N.B.  I still have and use it occasionally.

Did the bamboo pole myself as a kid, for spring crappie fishing a 12 - 16 foot long pole made it easy to drop bait right om their heads! First reel was a Langley bait caster on a True Temper steel rod, it cast well, but the drag sucked, it didn't have one except a thumb on the spool.

A green Shakespeare Wonder Reel, made by Inglis, the washing machine people, it was a hand me down from dad and a steel rod as well, it was hexagonal in X section and I believe it was made by True Temper, the same people that made good quality garden tools. Inglis had a plant in Hamilton and True Temper had one in St Catharines, like to believe it was locally made. You won't find that today.

True Temper had quite a few plants, they had one in Ashtabula  Ohio too, no idea where the rods were made. Pflueger reels were big in this area too, figures because they were based in Akron Ohio.

I think there was a Pflueger model named the Akron back in the day. Dad tournament casted back around 1950, I inherited his wornouts for a while, think he went to a Langley when I got the Wonder Reel. He was pretty good, there was a 1st place trophy for 5/8 ounce bait and a fly accuracy 1st place  , won at the Toronto Anglers and Hunter's competition at the sportsman show. Had a good teacher. 👍

They actually had a lot of models, I think dad had 1 and 1 Shakespeare reel but mostly Langley's, and from there he went to Abu's.

Yes, think that is it, right down to the black braided line. We used to set the metal garbage pail lids out on the lawn and practice casting accuracy, by 12 I was pretty good. The lids gave a satisfying clang when you were on the mark. Bought my own narrow spool Sportcast when I was 14/ 1964 picking strawberries.

hand lines with my dad swinging them in the air to get them out with a float on them until he broke down and bought me and my brother a popeils pocket fisherman

I still have a pocket fisherman...the kids used to use it for icefishing...I forgot about swinging with a hand line fishing for carp off the causeway at Lake Scugog using a bell sinker on the end and a doughball baited hook up about a foot...memories *sigh*
