Spiny Water Fleas

Recommended Posts

Seems late in coming- pretty sure the SWF has been in Lake Muskoka for quite a while now- I used to get a clump of them stuck at the swivel of my leader when deep trolling. Also- isn't it the SWF that has been a major factor in the declining Walleye stocks in Nipissing....

Impacts

Negative

  • Compete with many larval fish for food3.jpg11.jpg32.jpg

  • Outcompete native zooplankton populations leading to drastic decline in native populations7.jpg10.jpg15.jpg22.jpg29.jpg34.jpg

  • In high abundances they can catch on fishing line, fish nets, and trawls forming a paste that may alter the success of these items9.jpg23.jpg

Positive

Serves as a food source for many fish species including yellow perch, walleye, white bass, lake herring, and deepwater sculpin
