J's car battery went dead yesterday and so I charged it back up. This morning I went to get the car started and everything is fine....the battery is right up there BUT.. there's an anti start device on there. You know the kind with the flashing light that you have to hold a little something up to it for the car to be able to start? Well, I can't find that little something. Is there something else that I can hold up to that little light> Is there a way (easy) to disable the system? Thanks guys.

Disconnect your battery cables, this will reboot your computer to the default settings when you connect the cables back... but wait a couple of minutes before reconnecting the cables back

Hey Roy. Sorry I didn't see this sooner. May not matter anyway. I have seen those devices but up here they are few and far between. Have only ever seen 1 or 2 of them and neither one had an issue. So really haven't looked into how they are wired in. They cant be too complicated. It probably only interrupts the feed to the starter. But without seeing the wiring diagram or more info I cannot help much.

That "little something" has a transmitter that sends a specific code, so it will be needed to activate.

Uhh Ohhh, Canadave is back, :D :D :D

Welcome back, where have you been bud???????????? What's happening???????????????

The sensors for my anti lock brakes were failing in my CRV. The system would engage even when there was no slipping. I took it in to be looked at and it was going to be 700 bucks to replace them. I don't even like anti lock brakes, so the guy at the dealership said to just cut the wires leading to each wheel. I was about to do that, when I remembered there was a fuse that was part of the system so I took it out and all is fine.

Like someone else said, pulling the fuse may work....

Just an add on to what GCD said. It usually takes about 8-10 minutes for the reset after pulling the cables off the post. Thats how you can get rid of that pesky useless check engine light as well. lol

Holy crap Roy you're still breathing. I thought you probably died a long time ago

Wow. I've heard a lot about a character named Canadave from Garry2rs. Is it possible you're the one, and is it possible you did all the stuff he says you did? :worthy:

John, everything you might have heard about Canadave, however crazy it might have sounded, is most likely true.

Dave and I went to school together, his dad, bless his soul, used to walk us to school every morning. I thought that was pretty decent of him at the time till I found out that ol' dad was one grade ahead of us in elementary school.

Cliff, the rear sensors are really common problem on the CRV. They are exposed to road debris and damaged easily. ( I just bought a used 1998 CRV by the way).

Newer vehicles doing a battery disconnect will not likely clear the service codes. You are often not doing yourself or your vehicle any favors by not repairing properly either. The emission standards were put there for a reason. For those that drive with a check engine light on it isn't any different than throwing trash in the lake or river. Usually the emissions are unburned hydrocarbons (gasoline) and you see it as smog.

check engine light comes on my old mans truck if the gas cap is not very tight, and stays on, you have to disconnect the battery for approx. 10 mins, then reconnect and start the engine, stop, diconnect...... repeat 3 times for the light to turn off, word straight from the dealer,

sorry for hijaking ur thread Roy

I am not throwing trash in the lake. The check engine light is a scam. When you take it in they reset it. My truck just passed emission test with flying colours with the check engine light on.

Sounds like it's a GMC Grimace. My light, in my '98 GMC Sierra, has come on since the day it was new. I always know when the kids have got gas at Shell. It comes on after the first few miles on that stuff and with gas anywhere else it stays off. Still passes emission test with flying colours. Had same issue with our '87 GMC 1 ton delivery van.

Sorry if it sounded harsh guys. But the facts are there. Most of the time if your CEL is on there is a problem. Just some mechanics are afraid of repairing because they do not understand the systems or we as consumers don't want to spend money on it.

Just because it's clean out the tailpipe dosen't mean it's clean elsewhere. Why do you think the light comes on with a loose fuel cap? Its because they are designed to burn the vapours in the fuel tank system and if fuel vapors (hydrocarbons) are escaping that is contributing to pollution. But fuel cap leaks are only a portion of the leaks we find in those setups. Solenoids, loose hoses and rusted pipes are probably more common than caps.

Those that sometimes reset it are the scammers. not the CEL. I agree there may be rare cases of a problem that is almost impossible to locate due to being very intermittant but even those can be solved with patience.

Have been doing this stuff for a long time. I am not a ripoff mechanic. I do care. Ask any of my customers. What I am saying is true.

you can do the battery disconnect as many times as you want , sooner or later it'll just keep comming back on untill the problem is fixed, why not grab the code and see what it is? ive read bernie's posts many times about vehicles and have yet to see him type a word that wasnt true in regards to automotive repair, my older brother, father and his brother(uncle) and myself are all licenced mechanics in heavy equip, class A and truck coach, i can never comment on a auto request cause bernie just hits the nail on the head each time leaving zero room for a remark from moi.

The fords do it too. My old car, my dads truck, my dads old truck and the one before that. My Toyota only did it once.

I didn't want to hijack the post I was just adding on that I agreed with GCD about taking the battery off the post for a few minutes.

No disrespect intended Bernie and No offence taken either. I would never assume that a man I did not know was not on the straight and narrow, my comment was more directed at the manufacturers.

Cheers guys. Sorry Roy for taking your thread sideways

Hi Roy and TJ !

It's been a long time since I poked my nose in here. The last time was at some point when some kind of changes were made on the site and it took forever to download which in part may be related to my stupid dial-up although for the first several years I never had the problem. Also around that time some newbies started whining about rants and started threatening to lodge a complaint with the thought police and it got so ugly that TJ almost closed the site down and as a last resort passed the ball to Speil and Roy knowing that since they don't have a life they wouldn't mind carrying the ball. Who do you call when you want to carp to the thought police anyway? Probably Bob Rae. Now there's a useless turd for you. Some people think he's a genius and some sort of messiah even though he had to hit 60 before it finally started sinking in that his flavour of the month socialism would never get him to his goal of forcing the unwashed masses to genuflex to his fat ass every day but I digress. As I recall, the whiners went berserk if any topic didn't relate to stupid fishing and I figured that if you can't rant, cuz that's what life's for, then what's the point. I prayed to the Good Lord that whoever those whiners were, they would get cancer and die a painful death and rot in hell for eternity. I noticed that there is some ranting going on here now but it's nothing compared to the good ol' days so maybe the Grand Poo Bah in the sky answered my prayers sorta kinda. Maybe the whiners left and signed up at www.shitforbrains.com where they can share their miserable lives with other whiners but I digress. I noticed that a lot of the old regulars aren't here unless I just haven't checked the threads enough. Good to see that douGUH is still here. I wonder what happened to DILIGAF? I guess he was finally committed.
