There still might be some old timers that land pike by gripping them by the eyes causing all sorts of damage. This could easily cause loss of sight in at least one eye.
New owners ,there wasn't a Larry or Collene when I dealt there. The owners name was Reinhart and his wife ran the counter. A very pleasant German couple and Reinhart would always go out of his way to get me back on the water as quickly as possible.
I always had excellent service at Katrine Marine. I cannot remember the owners name but he did awesome work for me over the years that I dealt with him.
I've caught hundreds over the years by lifting rocks and shifting them slowly then use your hands to catch them. If you move slowly you won't miss many. Tie a floating minnow bucket to your waist to keep them in. I can already recall the the pain in back after a good crayfish session.
A 15 ft. rod is overkill unless your fishing big rivers all the time. A 13 ft. rod in my opinion is the best overall length for a float rod. A 9'6" rod would work on small streams but the 13' rod allows you to keep more line off the water giving you a better natural presentation. If you are worried about transportation some 13 or 13'6" rods come in 3 piece configurations.
You have a very cute granddaughter. I love to see people fishing with children. I read somewhere that a series of libraries exist where kids can sign out a rod and reel to start their fishing adventures, which I think is an absolutely great idea.
Perhaps if boaters had to pay $20 to launch their boat and instead of a seasonal lock pass a flat rate of $30 each time you use a lock then the fees for cottage owners could be kept to say $1000 per season. There should also be fees for people using parks to access the system say $20/day. This would mean that those using the system are paying to maintain the system.
I don't know how they would figure out a user fee for people owning a cottage on say Big Rideau Lake . Would you go by lake frontage or just charge each cottager a flat yearly fee of say $2000. What do they charge owners of trailer parks on the lake when not all their tenants have boats? These fees would certainly lower the value of cottages on these systems knowing a yearly fee was going to be charged if you used the system or not. Perhaps a good time to dump the cottage if you are on the Trent or Rideau systems
It has been many years since I attended either show . I enjoyed the Sportsman show ,but I didn't like the price of parking at Exhibition Stadium so I stopped going.
I would take a serious look at misfish's reel if you want to try pinning. You will never find a cheaper reel and you will be able to sell it for what he is asking. Your conversion would suck compared to his reel.
