What's your Must Have Checklist When in Bush
woodenboater replied to mirogak's topic in General Discussion
wrt: bears and food. There's not exactly consensus on hanging and all. I hang out of habit but there are some paddlers who throw their well sealed bags deep in the bush. Their belief, borne through experience, is that bears become habituated and learn where to go for food ie: trees close to campsites. Put the pack away from the campsite and bears will ignore it, unless they can sniff it out. Only time I had a bear experience was in Algonquin paddling interior via main street. When I got back from my trip, I relayed my experience with a guide I knew who was at the put in and he knew pretty well which lake I was referring to as that's as far as many noobs go which=fresh pickings for bruin. For hanging, I use two ropes. A long one gets strung between two trees with at least a 20' spread. In the middle of this rope I have a pulley through which the pack rope is threaded and this gets pulled to another tree and tied off. Make sure the main line is well off the ground (mine is around 20' or so) as a heavy pack will make it sag a few feet at least. as usual, ymmv -
What's your Must Have Checklist When in Bush

I think it bears repeating that a proper first aid kit is a MUST. It should be able to cover most incidents you'll encounter. Anti-histamines, alcohol swabs, surgical/ medical tape etc.. LED headlamp is also a must on my trips as is a tarp. While mine is on the heavy side, the Chlorophylle tarp is worth it's weight in gold when you have an inevitable rainy spring days/downpours. and yes, it will rain on you, always has for me At least one spare paddle. Lining ropes bow and stern (can be used to bring your canoe to shore if you upset out on the lake). Water filter/purifier and or tablets. and your fishing license...just in case -

and here I am thinking a Lexan French press on a canoe trip was luxe...didn't bother looking for the price tag of this puppy though -

I'm not feeling the love for lighters anymore so for me it's a good supply of Red Bird matches and lately, my year round kit includes a steel fire starter/sparker and good stash of char cloth. Warm clothes are a must no matter how gorgeous the weather may look. UCO candle lantern (don't hang from eve or else wax will get super soft and make a mess) is always welcome on miserable nights. and a good book. -
last line I bought (Rio) had a loop built in for attaching leaders etc.. but otherwise, nail knot like everyone suggests.

Help on House sterilizing / cleaning for health reasons.

Maybe also look at good duct cleaning service as well if the home is forced air ? Test for mould as well to be safe. Good luck -

I have no experience with this company, its just a google search that you may also have found. http://www.allergyreliefcleaning.com/AllergyProofYourHome.html In the meantime, can a HEPA air purifier help at all ? -
Getting ready for my June muskie trip...

fwiw, went to Tightlines yesterday and they don't carry Stringease anymore. Sent an email out and Fishing World and JB are dealers in the GTA. Very intrigued by the Fastach snaps. -
took me a second...

well not without a canoe eating 5km carry at least

I think what we're seeing is definitely a cultural divide. Depending on where they're from, this is something that may be considered normal and most likely related to putting food on the table no matter how. Of course, things are much different for them now that they're in Canada but I honestly believe this is something that is so ingrained in them that it may take some time to change. Most of the above would be people fishing from shore as a boat would be financially impossible for them. My attitude towards them would depend on many factors but I *could* see letting it slide if they were filling their buckets with crappies and rock bass and it looked like they were trying to make ends meet. If they were acting like self righteous, entitled pieholes, well I'd be feeling uncharitable and would curse them to high hell (sotto voce...) But yeah, education will be a slow process and require soft diplomacy.

Great sub surface photos ! and the colouring on those trout, gorgeous. Thx for the pix, and report

Been working on the boat...new floors...improvements.
woodenboater replied to ccmtcanada's topic in General Discussion
Hey Cliff, Curious why you went carpet instead of vinyl for the flooring. Is it a slip thing, or a cushy, squeeze the carpet with your toes thing and great job on the extended deck and trolling mount. WB -
If you find yer really digging throwing flies, then you may get the itch to upgrade and that's a slippery slope which leads to trips to Labrador or BC or destinations further afield, which in most cases hurts the pocketbook
-
Aw, that would make a nice pet. Put it in the aquarium and wreak havoc lol.

Thinking of targeting any particular species with the fly rig ? Pike and bass will need a bit heavier setup than trout (I was after small browns in a small stream). I have a 9' rod with 7 or 8 wt line for bass. and btw, kiss your cc balance good bye

Nope, regs say 2nd sat in May which is May 12 as pics posted above. Couldn't find any exceptions in the guide. Believe the regs, not someone's word.

OMG , did anyone see Lavar destroy Barry ??
woodenboater replied to woodenboater's topic in General Discussion
yeah, Nate has mad skills so hopefully a good fight. Belcher ? Gotta say I was worried when he started playing footsie with Palhares but what an amazing ground game they had going on. Helluva finish. So far, great finishes tonight even though they're all first rounders. -
Holy crackers, thought Barry was gonna force a tap but Lavar recovered and threw some seriously heavy knees and hammers at Barry who just crumpled from the barrage. Hoping Miller gets the win over Diaz.

but you have to be Club LeBaron member to get that extra 5% I believe...

agree. sitting around the fire listening to these stories, all while downing wobbly pops would not be a bad way to kill an evening. I see it now...OFC podcasts !

Terrific story and great legwork getting the backstory to the cabin. Hopefully it hasn't been torn down yet and they could see fit to keep it as part of park history (relatively recent as it may be). But I also see letting it slip back into the land it came from as a fitting end as well..

portable satellite radio for Sirius or XM ? Pricey though.

Algonquin Trout Opener ~ Pic's And Video
woodenboater replied to solopaddler's topic in General Discussion
What an awesome TR ! I don't think there's any opener like a spring opener in The Park. 5 km of carrying hell really does get you closer to nirvana doesn't it ? I was waiting for a punchline to your story and was bowled over when I saw the photos of the wheel worn canoe lol ! Thank god you found the other group or else you and Fidel woulda been looking for pitch and ripping up clothes And yeah, those are some absolutely gorgeous brookies you landed. I like the way you do your trout, some flour, butter and some heat. Way better than trad shore lunches imo. -
anyone wanna hazard a guess who makes the Pro Qualifier for BPS ? good info Mike, aluminum would probably take rough handling a bit better than plastic and backbay has an important point about tolerances and what one can live with if the rest of the reel is solid. I should probably print this thread out so I can keep it on file for future reference. thanks guys/gals
