Gilford/Cook's Bay Bait and Tackle
Headhunter replied to RustyShackleford's topic in General Discussion
You know, I agree with both of you on this point on just about any other body of water, but on Cooks Bay, which was the body of water in question by the O.P., they feast on shrimp all winter. I also believe that Perch can be triggered to bite and that the small one's will almost always start the frenzy. The bigger one's get "jealous" and can be more easily convinced to bite. They sure don't like seeing smaller fish get a meal that they should have! HH -
Gilford/Cook's Bay Bait and Tackle
Headhunter replied to RustyShackleford's topic in General Discussion
Uhm... no it's not! Perch are on the feed bag on Cook's, there's no denying it. They will eat anything that resembles their forage and their main forage is Grass Shrimp. Put some plastic down the hole that looks like grass shrimp and you will be busy all day. Use minnows and you will spend more time baiting, chasing minnows in the minnow bucket, trying to thread a minnow onto a hook at minus 15C can get old pretty fast. I have done this challenge a few times in the past. Yes, both methods can catch fish, but my experience has shown that I will catch 3-4 fish, for every fish caught by guys sitting right beside me using minnows. It's all about speed! HH -
I have been Perch fishing on Simcoe for many a year, but I have never caught a Herring until this year, where I have caught four in two trips. Actually we saw a few schools go right under our holes on my last trip out. All were released in a timely manner. Do my results mirrow yours? Do you think that maybe we'll see the moritorium on Herring lifted in the next few years? Just wondering out loud here! HH

I hear yah Bob Billy! We still laugh about that one! HH

Bell has been our ISP here at work for many years. We were having consistent problems connecting to a stable network and finally, my boss got tired of it and called business customer support. She ended up speaking with a CSR in Mumbai. She outlined what the problem was and the CSR put her on hold. Half an hour later, the CSR comes back and says that they checked the connection and the problem was an internal one. We knew for a fact, that the problem was in the wiring closet down the hall, not in our actual office. (We are in the business of placing I.T. people and had a few review our issues and they determined it was a Bell problem) The CSR wouldn't here it and eventually, disconnected the call!!!! My boss, now with the bit, firmly planted in her teeth, called back and again, got Mumbai. She told the CSR of her earlier call and he then asked her if he could put her on hold. The boss lost it!!! She told him that the last CSR dropped her call and here is what the guy on the phone said... "Don't worry ma'am, I'll be with you till we kill the goat"!!!! Seriously, that's an exact quote! We were in tears on that one for quite some time! Eventually, they sent a tech to our office and determined that yes, it was a Bell problem and they did manage after two visits, to get us up and running again. Anyone want a Goat Roti!? HH

Gilford/Cook's Bay Bait and Tackle
Headhunter replied to RustyShackleford's topic in General Discussion
If Perch is what your after, I would like to suggest that minnows are a waste of time and money! The Perch in Cook's are feeding on emerging grass shrimp. Every one of 'em that I caught on Monday spewed shrimp as they reached the top of the hole... so, if you wanna catch high numbers, you have to get the bait to them quickly and you need to mimic what they are eating. Jigging Rapala, with Berkely micro's on the treble will get you bites all day long! Minnows are a pain, you waste too many of small fish and re-rigging takes too much time. HH -
Now that's funny! HH

What! And just hand over all that hard won fish catching karma!?! HH

I've been filling my spinning reels with Seaguar Floro for a couple of years. I really like it. Now, many of you guys have a reel for each and every application you use. I have two spinning reels that get the lion's share of use, for any and all applications. I use the same reel to jig Pickereyes as I do for jiggin Whities on Simcoe. So far the line has been flawless. I find it easy to spool, easy tie knots and I also like the fact that it stretches less and makes my hook sets in deep Whitie land solid. Heck, two winters ago, I used it up at Waynes place, sitting outside in minus 32 degree weather (not including wind chill) and it was flawless. Never had a problem with it. Yah, it's more expensive than mono, but to me it's worth it... to some of you guys who carry multiple rods, it can get scarey expensive. I am not a fan of braid and I am not a fan of tying leaders as that time is time that I should be fishing, not tying. No, I don't fish spotted carp (Trout) so I can't speak from that perspective, but I do like the Floro I have used so far. HH

Chris, firstly, as you well know, not everyone can get away with wearing those shirts... If you really really NEED to get one, head to you local Double V. They can be had for as little as $5.00, but you will have to answer a skill testing question!!!! Thanks Joey... it sure is a lot of fun catching fish non stop, regardless of their size! It's a time of year I look forward to every year! HH

Yah, you're right, Cook's Bay Perch do look so much different from any other Perch! LMAO And if you were twice your current size, you'd still be half the size of Mike!!!! HH

Got out yesterday as I and a few of my buds had the day off. Arrived at Keswick at 7:00am and we were fishin by 7:15. Stared out about 300 yds from shore and started to spank'em right away. Fished that area for an hour or so, then decided to move out farther hoping for some bigger fish. The fish didn't really get any bigger, but the bite was steady and the Perch were cooperative! Total for the day was as follows; HH -144 and two Herring! Tom 100 and two Herring Rubin - 60 and two Herring Pete - 55 and three Herring All Herring were immediately released! Hot bait again was the Berkely Grub on a jiggin Rap... blue and silver or Firetiger... Ended up taking home about 20 in total... still a dink fest, but lots of fun! Ice was anywhere from 4 inches to 7 inches, depending on where we were... the four inches we fished was solid black ice... you could see the Herring fighting 10 feet below the whole, through the ice. Waiting for the main lake to freeze up so we can multi-species fish. So, I've been out twice on Cook's in the past week and have personally landed over 300 perch... and between the two groups I've been with, we have landed well into the 1000 perch range! It's a ton of fun and I highly recommend getting out while they remain cooperative! HH

Forgot to mention in the O.P. that we caught four Herring on Wednesday as well... a first for me anyway... thought we had the mother of all Perch on until we saw the silver flashing under the ice... all we returned unharmed. HH

Here's what worked for us....] -Jiggin Raps and Berkely Power Maggots -find 20ft of water and they are there -a very lite rod or a stike indicator as they are some times just lickin it Have a blast! HH

Some things never change, eh Chris! LMAO HH
