Maybe the new slot size and limits will help the pickerel rebound?...
As far as the perch, new limits might help boost the size...sounds like too many jumbos were kept over the years and forced the smaller fish to spawn...
Opening the Kawartha lakes for year round panfish should take some of the pressure off of the Bog...
Better make sure you got your long-johns on Cliff...

Went out to throw some wood up onto the back porch...it can wait 'till later...
I gave my manual auger to a kid's club in Whitby as I figured at my age I was going to pack ice fishing in then they go and open up the Kawartha Lakes for panfish year round...Now I can ice fish in my backyard so to speak...I'd love to buy a new one but all my loose change just went to buy a new suit for my son's wedding in February...
Most of my friends that ice fish have augers...so it is not a real necessity unless I go out by myself...
I agree with Spiel...
I waited 'until this afternoon to try my luck for the first time this season...
I would say there is about 8 to 10 inches of good hard ice on Taite's Bay (North shore of Pigeon Lake)
No fish but lots of good hard ice...
Opened my first hole at 01:30 pm and chopped open another before 03:00 pm...would have moved around a bit more but I was using a hatchet and a spud to chop holes and it was taking at least 15 minutes each time...tried a perch colored jigging rap tipped with a chartreuse Gulp maggot and nada...switched over to a small Williams wobbler with a drop line and a Gulp minnow and nuttin...(both work on crappies at Jack Lake) Also tried jigging a Fin-S shad to no avail...At 04:00pm the wind picked up and the temps dropped so I packed it in early...
Not the best report to start the season but ...what can i tell you...
Maybe next time I will invest in some minnows and use one of Dawg's Sabiki rigs...
Can't wait for tomorrow...I even considered going out on the lake today and chopping and marking a couple of holes so that all I would have to do in the morning was open them up...
Knowing my luck, somebody would probably be using them, so I didn't bother...
I hope everybody has a good New Year of fishing...
Dang !!!...The wife was in Costco yesterday while I waited outside...Didn't know about their 100% Columbian coffee...My favorite type...right now I am enjoying some freshly ground Columbian in a large 16 ounce Starbucks cup that I got in the draw at the Tyler Event last year...Maribeth gave me a 1 lb bag of beans for Christmas and I grind my own and use a Melita No 2 manual filter...heat up 16 ounces of water in the microwave as I'm the only one that drinks coffee here unless Jack (Nanook) drops by on his way home from wood carving...Rarely will I have more than one large cup a day...Don't care much for Timmies...prefer Country Style...Both places would go bankrupt waiting for me...
I know what you are going through Cliff...I get the same deal up here at ValueMart and Foodland...unless you get there when the stores open on Friday morning when the sales start...You're outta luck...
It's those damn senior citizens buying them all...
OOPS!!!...wait a minute...I are one...
Just read on another site that the bait shop at the back of the service center on hwy 400 between Major Mac and King Sideroad (northbound) has licenses...
Up here, (Galway, Harvey, Cavendish Township) if a dog bites, even if it bites another dog... the owner must muzzle it every time it goes outdoors even when on a leash or running line...Outdoors = muzzle...Zero tolerance !!!
Fishing is my mental health therapy...
I feel closer to my Higher Power when I'm communing with nature and wetting a line...
Besides...What else can you do that gives you the freedom of no cares or worries other than some stupid fish gets caught on your hook...and if you don't use any bait theres a good chance you don't have to worry about that either !!!
Yep...There is more to fishing , than catching fish...eh Lew?
