I was down by the north shore of Pigeon Lake this afternoon checking the ice... I would guess the water is up about a foot from last Saturday... Today...
-
Congrats on finding new digs so close to fishing... I always thought "Uptergrove" sounded obscene whenever I was driving through it...
-
Hey Cliff...wanna borrow my spud...
-
Thanks for the vote of confidence Jack but, truth be told, I still have to take a reel off my ice-fishing rod, top the 4lb test mono on it with 6 lb. test, walk it all off then reverse it back on the reel so that the unused end of the 4 lb will be on top... Other than that I'm ready to rock and roll... Back in the olden days we used to say "boogie"

Took a run down by the lake on Saturday at noon... The sub zero temps Thursday and Friday Nights put a thin shell of ice along the shoreline...With the forecasted temps in the twenties next weekend the ice won't be around much longer...

Thanks for all the good wishes guys and gals...I don't feel a day older than 74...

Anybody fishing the Kawarthas need to be careful not to fish the fast waters below most dams...they are fish sanctuaries until the 3rd. Saturday of May...check the exceptions for zone 17...

I had good luck last year using Monster Maize from New World Carp Tackle on my hair rigs and used regular maize for chumming...

The first fall we lived up here (north shore of Pigeon Lake) my bro-in-law and I were fishing for bull bluegills and lost six to mucksies in six different areas...each time they immediately broke us off as we were only using 4 lb test mono... The one that grabbed my bluegill right beside the boat looked like a big log with a head...Uncle Dave said "If that jumps in the boat, I'm jumping out" !!!... Didn't have to worry about releasing them, They did that themselves...

Are you referring to the old Sandercock's Camp ? When Pat and Bob Smith owned Sandercocks they probably made a good buck but then they rented cottages, camping sites, seasonal trailer sites, ran the store and food services (take-out only)...and sold a bit of tackle and bait...rented out boats and motors and dockage spaces...plus charged launching fees... If they relied on the food end only they would have starved to death...mind you the egg, ham, and cheese on an english muffin w/coffee was a good breakfast some mornings and their burger and fries made for a good lunch...We used to buy the odd large order of french fries to go along with whatever we were making on our own BBQs at my son and bro-in-laws' trailers... After Bob died, Pat sold the place and things stayed the same until the new owner had to sell...The next owners gave everybody with trailers 2 week notice to vacate the premises... Last I saw of the camp it looked like a disaster zone so unless things have greatly improved I wouldn't be making use of any part of it...Have you been down to take a look-see ???

I know that feeling first hand Tony... The ratio is about CPH 5 : Beans 1... Sound about right to you ??? Come to think of it, Cph usually beats me in the carp department also...
-
Victor...maybe if I can find some low-salt sausages I might be able to enjoy some of your BBQ cooking this season... ...sure smelled good ! Mike...terrific report !!!
-
Tony has been there and done that...you couldn't find any of his "specials" for love nor money... The manufacturer reneged and started making them again...

A few years ago we used to fish crappie at Rice Lake (no limit) in the evenings in the fall and there was an army of people taking home coolers full night after night...we used to give them ours until we found out they were selling them...After that you should have heard them crying when we tossed back big slabs about (1 1/2 lbrs)..."I'll take it...I'll take it"..."Naw...too small...too small" Not too sure if it was illigel for them to sell the crappie but they wern't selling anymore of ours...

Maribeth and I will be heading down to Markham shortly to see our model/movie star grandson, Daniel who will be signing autographs at the Markville Mall this afternoon...He and his mother flew up from Los Angeles for the promotion of the new movie "Coach"... Besides modelling when they lived in Canada, he also was a pretty good hockey player in the junior ranks and I believe this movie is about a hockey coach... He has been in several TV series notably...Wizards of Waverly where he played the lead femal star's boyfriend "Dean"...It has been a couple of years since we last saw him... Were we glad to see him...you betcha... -
Nasty rumor started by pickerel fishermen... Crappie are here to stay in the Kawarthas... Ryan reminded me of the first time I targeted crappie up here with Lew and Meely (yep...you heard right...Lew)...We wanted some to have with our lunch and all we were catching that morning was bull bluegills... I suggested we keep some if we wanted a taste of fish with our chicken, steak, Kolbassa, salad etc...(that Meely sure puts on a spread...he is more than a g'weech maker)...they thought I was nuts but after tasting bluegills they changed their minds... We did get into the crappies in the afternoon...
