  1. The MNR's data is based on air counts: helicopter runs. People have told me that they don't count as thoroughly as they used to and that they changed their methods, so the numbers ended up falsely low...I can't confirm that, but it's plausible and given the state of the MNR, almost seems likely.
  2. Asking you to share your ladies might be a bit crass ..
  3. Loving the beard Jer! Those herring look like gianet smelt. Look tasty
  4. According to the MNR's data and interpretation they are. Some people question their counting methods... I suppose it would be nice to have an independent review and/or count, but who is going to spend the money doing that?
  5. A good response from a true N.Ont. Hunter/outdoorsman. I gotta get myself on that list, at least for deer.
  6. Buddy the Husky finished off a nice inland bow yesterday. He liked it almost as much as I enjoyed the filets! If it's a non-game fish like chub, herring (nipissing), burbot...then can you feed them whole to the dog?
  7. -Gather and heat my house with wood -Get as much wild food as possible (mushrooms, fiddleheads, deer if possible, berries) -Big garden, learning to freeze/store stuff -Raise rabbits and chickens for meat (chickens this spring) -Keep my insurance at bare minimum -Don't go shopping/looking/window shopping/avoid amazon and ebay -Garage sale, kijiji, and also sell off things I don't use or can turn a profit (for example I made $80 selling old doors and a bottle collection the other day) -I dont' do lawn care and I don't care if my driveway is plowed properly (mind you I live in the middle of nowhere) which means no expensive lawnmower or blower -I collect scrap metal when I find it -My phone and internet are of very poor quality, but it works and it's cheap. -avoid eating out as much as possible. This is a very tough one! But 80% of my meals are made at home. -Think of fancy brand names as people who only want your money and laugh at you. -Wear white t-shirts everyday haha. -price matching at grocery stores (wife's job) -taking advantage of points programs when they are actually free. With AirMiles I cash in points for RRSP vouchers! list goes on haha
  8. Maybe not sole food source, but it can be an important food source and it should be respected as a Canadian tradition. If the population was healthy around here, and I could reasonably expect to get a tag, I'd love to down a moose and yes, it would replace a whole bunch of grocery store trucked meat. I know nothing of polar bears; if the populations can sustain a hunt then go ahead.
  9. Severely restrictive moose hunts based on population loss concerns; yet just next door our native friends hunt based on what? I agree with putting in additional restrictions, being a large tasty animal in todays world is not easy without full, cooperative managment.
  10. New Toyota Tacoma TRD tomorrow! Gonna miss the Cherokee a lot, but the truck is free and it's a truck!

  11. Pound fer pound we were about tied for the day.... although I'll take an inland rainbown anyday over a pike haha. Looks like you managed to stay warmer than I did
  12. You'll be eating well in the foreseeable future! Nice haul.
  13. Yep, I'd gather my own evidence, re-asses the situation, then decide how to fix the situation (mnr, police, large signage on property)
  14. I said: "we should have a date day" and she loved the idea. Now I can tell her it's a double date and not lie.
  15. From what I understand Blair's shack comes equipped with full entertainment and free drinks
  16. Good job Sam. Way to outfish Nick! The red stuff are the external gills on the mudpuppys. They all have it, but you can't always see them.
  17. Most of the posts on this thread are from last year. It's quite apparent that last year was colder than our current winter. The 10% clean energy credit applies to the first 3,000kw's used in a month. After 3000kw, you don't get the credit
  18. This winter is definitely not as harsh as last year. I'm still burning a good pile of wood though; but I do that coz I'm cheap and I have the property to cut from Yep, propane prices are nice this winter. 0.64/l. I've spent about $300 on propane this winter which includes heat/water and cooking stove
  19. Wow, this guy was balsy. I bet he pissed off a lot of locals... yet at the same time people were obviously buying his fish.
  20. To your first point: just happened to me a month ago. 4 minor speeding tickets , no points, $50 each ticket. Insurance dropped me and my rates are triple. I just requested a company vehicle instead. No way I'm paying those ridiculous rates when, for $60 per year my original insurer would cover an at fault accident that could potentially cost a million dollars. Pure none sense
  21. You just made Joey a very jealous man haha. Nice sled!
  22. They don't want to do that because they would have to collect the money as general revenue, have it subjected to taxes (both HST and corporate) etc and do all the paperwork. By having it separate it saves them work. It's completely a consumer-pay model. I came up with a slogan. "Days Inn, brought to you by you"
  23. It was days inn Ottawa hunt club/airport. They clearly listed the fees which is why I jumped on it. I looked into it and made some calls, it's really consumer-unfriendly: The hotel opts to join a regional tourism group then they create an internal policy to levy the fees which are usually 3%, because as they put it "there is no government funding to promote our industry". They insist they do not pocket the fee and therefore it justifies the fees' existence as not being a "cash grab", yet the actual handling of the collected fees is not transparent to the consumer paying for them. The Ontario Government supports this program because it keeps the hotels off their backs. The hotel has voluntarily joined this group, but retains the right to pay the fees forward to the consumer and force them to pay it, because: when you sign your hotel agreement, it states "you agree to pay all applicable taxes and fees". They can easily, legally and without harm to themselves remove this fee, but if they don't feel like it that day, or don't like your face, they can legally force you to pay, because it's in the contract. My take on it is this: it's very unfair that the consumer is forced to pay above the room cost, fees that were charged because the hotel chose to join a promotional "pay to use" organization. Those fees are used to gain monetary profits for the company and to basically market there own business, which should be their own responsibility anyway.... As it is in any business. Most people are unaware of the surcharge and pay it without thought, which makes it a very profitable scheme. Hotels are generally way overpriced and dirty and cheap, this surcharge is just a reminder that they are not in the business of taking care of clients as they like to advertise, but in the business of squeezing out every penny from people who are forced to stay in accommodations, be it for business or personal reasons. It's a bully tactic for their own gain. Drives me nuts and I'm glad I called the GM a creepy bugger because he had full power to remove the fee and should understand that it looks bad and it a cash grab in the eyes of the consumer.
