  1. bought a magellan explorist 500 on ebay this spring. It was a discontinued model but brand new $90 plus shipping or therabouts, including shipping. Magellan topo map from the website - $ 45 download to my lap top as often as I want - likewise install on the hand held. So far - so good. I got EC10, bluff's bar, LPB launch point all marked and it got me to each of them just fine so far (but dont ask vinnimon and frankie65 about that one trip back to Jordon Harbour....... track ghost - good thing it wasn't foggy . Still don't know if that was user or.... just one of those things)
  2. I chartered with this guy for Walleye. My link Hit our limit with 6 guys in 2.5 hours. Between the info in this article and Mike P's posting looks like a good start. I am hoping to get down to LSC later in August to hunt some of those too. Let us know how you do - what works and what doesn't
  3. Nice spot and a decent fish Vince. No water skiing instructors on that one?
  4. My link If they sell 'em I imagine any good tackle store will - or can get them for ya
  5. Crab, snapping turtle, other peoples snags, fresh water mussle, fresh water clam and then this funny little thing below last year off Fort lauderdale - these are the fish that suck on sharks. Charter guy stuck it on the boat and it stayed there for like 3, 4 minutes before letting go.
  6. Well, judging from the piture, you pulled them up in time !!- I counted 10!!
  7. This site has some weird posts every once in a while. Dainty? Robust?......................could be time to change channels........... Were you using those for bait? I tell my kids, dangle your toes over the edge of the boat and don't be surprised if a snapping turtle thinks they are candy.
  8. you guys are more fortunate than I. My cover is so tight I can't add anything and still do the snaps up. Even where I moved the cleats - cant do them up now. If I could I would. Next year I plan on installing a set of rails in the bow so I can have rod holders up there.
  9. unless you happen to have a custom cover that has snaps rivetted under the gunwhales. Cover wont fit once you put the track on.
  10. I have the same boat - Starfire 160. I bought a piece of 1" maple and cut it to fit, and drilled holes to match the rear cleat holes, moved the cleats back 3 inches or so, got some 7/16th alumimum flat stock . Drilled through the maple and flat stock at the (previous) cleat holes and rigger mounts, installed flat stock under the maple at the rigger bases and under the gunwhales. Then added 2x4 supports under the riggers and mounted door hinges at the bootom of these to the rear casting deck. Used some of the big plastic (sorry can't remember the name) handles to attach the board to the gunwhales. It takes 5 - 10 mintes to set up the riggers et all. The door hinges on the castiing deck fold down when not in use, but provide support to the board when in use. Let me know if you want pics to help visulise and I will do over the weekend. So far its held up like a charm.
  11. Hey Solo: I hope I can have that relationship with my son when its that time for me! Good on both of you for that level . Assuming of course he pays for the motor repairs
  12. UPS is bad for this. I work in cross border transport and well, honestly these guys subsidize their rates to big companies by their brokerage fees to the little guys. Take your pick of any other carrier and it will be less. Purolator, (not fedex), general mail, ... always check this before you agree to send. I once had a bunch of promo materials from the US govnmt sent to me. They notated the value as a nominal $1.00 per booklet to meet customs requirements. 200 booklets : Duties = 0; shipping = 0. UPS brokerage fees= $150.00 Garry - fact is a warranty repair is duty free - but brokerage fees are not recoverable - only deductible if you happen to have a business which would qualify as an expense and it meets all the criteria????
  13. Hey ch312 I see you live in my neck of the woods. I looked around all winter and spring, ended up buying a used starcraft from proctor marine. These guys have been great, and they have an unusual approach to selling. They just tell it like it is and let you decide. No pressure, no gimmicks - and they know their stuff. They are an agent for Princecraft among others. Not sure what your budget is but they got a real nice looking 2009 17 footer for sale right now:My link Good luck with that search, and let us kn ow what you come up with
  14. no wonder her backs sore if every time you take her out she catches fish like that.
  15. I have a magellan and downloaded my topo of Ontario and Quebec for $45.00 - Not sure if Garmin offers the same or not. There is a link on U-tube showing you how to do it for free, or the guy will do it for you for something like $20.00 good luck
  16. Thanks SRT8 - I'll try that next time. Was kind a po'd last time I launched at the park - cost went up from 10 to 13 or so. No announcement, just bang. That drive around the bay from TP is a ride - I'll give it a shot. I found out how far PH point went out much the same way, first time out. Fishinder went from 10 to 1 foot in a flash. managed to slow down and hit the trim button before the sand stopped us, but have been a little more cautious when I see the colour of the water change anywhere near there ever since. I see alot of guys blast through on some of the channels, but i figure they are locals or live on the water and know where the channels are and when they move. For me, avoidance is better thanan introduction of nose to the steering wheel at 20+ mph. Some nice weed beds off either side of it though.
  17. you'll be fine. I took my 12 ft tinny out last year with an 8 hp on it. just stay between shore and 1/4 way across the river and or follow the other guys drifting - there will be boat traffic, big and little. I didn't go up stream of the launch 'cause I had been on that in a bigger boat (20 ft lund with a 90 tiller) on a charter - OFC'er - and there were some interesting currents I didnt wish to discover that close and personal.
  18. Bought the boat this spring. I have been enjoying it to date, and was somewhat reminded by my family last night at the dinner table of the frequency of my enjoyment: as we ate some port hope trout (courtesy of fishunter charters - thanks Lloyd!) My son - Dad, this fish is delicious - is it one you caught My Wife - What do you think Garreth, what's your Dad done evey weekend since fishing season opened? My Son - Fish My Daughter - Fish, My Wife - fish, fish, fish Me - um, I know there was at least one weekend I didn't .....
  19. time to bluffs bar is directly affected by if you know the channels. the sand bar off Pottahawk point has, slowed down? more than one boat in the past? going around it adds a few minutes to the trip. but then so does running into it being new to the bay, I still go around and it takes about 20 mins to 1/2 hr with mine (16 ft w/ 50 hp) to get to the middle 24 - 27 mph according to the gps - depending on the amount of boats . one of these days I'll do a GPS track on the channels - for now I just enjoy getting ther almost as much as fishing.... . almost
  20. Sorry to hear about the damage - that's stuff scary. You understand why on the way to detroit all the bridges ahve chain link fence 8 foot up - sad statement on what some individuals have to do for a kick - on the other hand - beauty fish counts and nice report/ photos - hope everyone heals up ok. Closed my thinb in the door once. Ever notice how the painful ones only produce "PAIN" after you stop, look and go Oh no.... that's gonna hurt,,,,, now slowly remove.......................
  21. awesome outing, beauty fish - keep those (long arm) photo's comin!. All of a sudden I am finding a reason to agree with my wife that a trip to the ottawa region next year might be a good idea
  22. Congrats Frank! Great pics and report? What's the next goal?
  23. pinehurst. camping, swimming boat rentals, crappie, blue gill off the dock and LMB in the lillies. walking trails - and if the weather turns bad your 15 minutes from home. Also some of the sweetest corn around just outside Paris on the east side.
  24. I had the same sticker shock when I went looking. I found the ugly duckling variety - not gloss black covering, no signage. I think they were about 25 or 30 each. The holders were almost as much at 18. That was in Cambridge at Fish Tales. Some of the big CT stores have 'em, but I never priced them
  25. Under the highway traffic act an insecure load is a minimum 6 points on the driver's license. NSC 10 , which is the regulation for load securement, clearly outlines the minimum requirements for a secure load. Any load must have a minimum working load limit of 0.8g to resist forward movement, .5 g backward, .2 g upward and .5 g side to side (1 g = the weight of the load). The operator is requiired to check and verify load securement at the time the do their pre trip inspection, and every 3 hours or 50 km thereafter. A secondary means of securement is required on several types of load securement. Cleary these guys didn't do any of the above, and from a guy who has been in the provincial court defending due diligence cases - I'd like to see them defend this one. Charges under the Police Services Act may be more punishing from an employment perspective, but IMO charges should be laid under the HTA, and, assuming this vehicle was over 4500 kg GVW, against the CVOR of the Police Force, as it is a CMV. Most transport companies would terminate a driver who was so negligent. I remember a few years ago when flying wheels were an issue and the MTO's sanding truck lost a set of duals while out on duty. Didn't hear much fall out after that one either As a guy who has spent the last 30 years ensuring my vehicles and drivers are safe and exceed the requirements, I'm fed up with seeing OPP and local police put on lights and sirens as a way to get back to the office at 150 K + so they can clock out, ignore the rules of the road because it is inconvenient and then blast someone who makes a rolling stop at an interection when no one -- other than them hiding in a bush 200 meters away -- was around. I'm not saying that all officers are like this - but I see enough of them that I feel its an issue. And these guys in Barrie - well they need to be hung out to dry -- cause they sure can't handle something that goes in the water OK soap box, down 1 step, 2 step.... going to have a beer now and rest, well vented.....
