Laker fishing sucked, OOS Musky was a surprise though
limeyangler replied to limeyangler's topic in General Discussion
Its like waiting for a bus....nothing for 2 hours then 4 come along at once! Isn't that just the funkiest ginger 'fro ever! Thanks Mike......yeah....i gave him a bit of a verbal earbashing for 10 minutes after that, i hate that on any fish....even more so on a musky! but it was cool to get one so unexpectedly. Thanks Jacques, sunrise was truly breathtaking...it was friggin' cold (-1C) but flat calm....just so tranquil. Yeah....i did not want to even take her/him out for a picture, plenty of time for that in season, luckily it was a walleye spinner so no trebles, and right in the corner of the mouth. Thanks Fisherdude, yeah...fishing kinda sucked, but might just have been worse than it really was cuz my expectations were too high...lol...nah...fishing sucked...lol Thanks for pointing that out Roy, nuff said i fink -
Good stuff Bruce...i've only ever caught a sucker once...about the same size as your picture....but man did it put up a good fight! cheers for the report. Simon

I went through 3 berkely 'cherrywood' rods once in 2 weeks. Same thing...snapped each time while casting, was only casting size 3 Mepps 'black fury'. I know they were cheap at $29, but if you are marketing something as a spinning rod and it breaks whilst using it for that purpose...its pretty crappy if ya ask me. Took it back to walmart each time and they refunded it.......raised some suspicious eyebrows from the customer service lady who refunded 2 of them for me in as many days....i wont be buying any more Berkely rods ever again. Can you not take it back to where you bought it for a refund ?

Hi all, First of thanks to Leechman, GBW, Steverobotham, Ben_Daniels, Cudz, Garnet and Dr. Salvelinus for your quick responses to my smallmouth bass queries. Unfortunately all the good advice was to no avail....not a bass anywhere to be had. Like i mentioned in the bass post, i had fished this lake for Lakers twice before, and skunked both times. However on the second outing ....determined to catch a fish before going home i threw a mepps out in a small bay and got a bass...and another and another. That was 3 years ago....and i was completely green around the gills(pun intended) when it came to fishing freshwater fish species up here. Since then though, despite the steep learning curve, i think i have got at least a little bit better and do quite well, quite often. With this in mind i had every expectation to get into a lot of lakers and at least one Bass....was not to be......in fact we only got 2 small trout with 2 missed/got off half way up and not even the slightest hint of anything bassy all day....despite trying just about every suggestion made and a few things that have worked before. With the ice only off this lake in the last week or two we completely expected to be able to dial into the Lakers anywhere in the water column, definitely conentrating on shallower waters at this time. In fact the water temps were still pretty low....around 40- 42 degrees, with surface temps in the afternoon on south facing shores around 46-49 degrees. Strangely though the only sign of baitfish...or any fish for that matter that showed on the fishfinder were at depths between 79 and 108 FOW! thats where we got our trout...without a sniff of one before that trolling the 6 - 45 FOW shorelines/humps/bays etc....etc.... We did see another boat out there, a local guy who fishes that lake all the time he said, and they had not caught a single thing, that sucked for them, but made us at least feel a bit better in that it wasn't anything we were doing wrong that was making the fishing so tough. The best, if not a little bit surprisng was the OOS musky i got after 2 hours of fruitless trolling in the shallower water, ON A SMALL HAMMERED GOLD WALLEYE SPINNER WITH A MEDIUM MINNOW (deadly for trout on Thunder Lake in the spring). Another great part of the day was the weather, whilst not conducive to fishing perhaps, it must have been at least 20 C out there today...and sunrise was breathtaking. All in all an interesting experience....but on a three strikes and your out rule...i think i will be giving this lake a miss in the future! Going to a small lake by the highway for a family picnic tomorrow....hopefully get my bass then! I've never fished for them this early either Jacques as i'm usually still out on the snowmachine drilling holes for Lakers! I'm just wondering what they will be doing as its surely too cold for them to be even staging for the spawn.....but i've got 3 doz small to large minnows and i'll give that a go....slowly. Thanks for the advice. I dont have that exact lure...but i googled it GBW and have similar lures....will throw a couple and work it slow. Thanks man...i'll be posting a report later tomorrow....let ya know how i get on.....i'm pretty excited...heading out at stupid o'clock to pick up my buddy...better try get some zzzzzzs

LOL Jacques......dear poor Jacques....quality work my friend....but you really need to get out fishing! -
Hi all, I'm off to a Lake that i've been to twice and skunked both times for Lakers. On the second time out 2 years ago i was determined to catch a fish before we left so started throwing a mepps around for pike and discovered the lake was full of smallmouth bass. However, that was in mid july and the bass were hitting almost anything and everything we threw at them , even hitting topwater poppers , all in 30' FOW. My question is though, what would be a good approach at the moment? Given that the ice is only just gone and water temps will be at most 45 degrees C throughout. Where are the bass likely to be? what baits?......and yes...bass is open all year here in zones 4 and 5. Any help/advice/insight would be much appreciated...thanks all in advance.

Yup its a Mitchel....part of a $39 walmart combo...have 2 with rear drag and one front drag....use them in summer and on the ice...3rd year now....i treat 'em like @#$# but they keep going......awesome little reels. In fact Walmart sell them seperately for $39....so might as well get the combo as the spinning rod is excellent too...in fact it was the rod that attracted me...good for walleye jigging(sensitive) good for casting for all sorts too.

hi all, seems weird to be casting from shore and jigging in the boat for close of walleye season...but i'll take it! End of walleye was on wednesday and got out in the boat, but also got a quick shore session in front of the house after baby went to sleep. The evening of the 13th was picture perfect.....no wind stunning sunsets and wildlife coming out of hibernation....felt like a july evening on the shore, even got bit by a couple of bugs. WAS SO NICE ON OUR SHORE TUESDAY EVENING Fishing with a knuckle ball jig (chart/orange) and just lazily casting it out 20yrds or so usually brings in supper, and after a slow start i landed a few small walleye, just the perfect way to wind down after chasing baby Jack around the whole day.....lol GOT A FEW SMALL WALLEYE ALL C&R <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> Wednesday we headed back to Eagle lake to fish the closing day (walleye). The weather was miserable compared to the evening before with high winds and rain, but it was so cool to be fishing in the boat it did not deter us or dampen our spirits....never does anyway. We decided to go exploring and spent the first few hours way down the south west arm of the lake, trying different stuff with little to no fish in the boat. Most exitement was a nice walleye Al got, which looked like it got into a fight with a muskie, and an eagle that snatched a small jackfish that was not feeling to good after the unhooking process right off the surface. THIS EAGLE FOLLOWED US ALONG SHORE FOR OVER A MILE...LOOKING FOR SCRAPS AND GOT SOME! Fishing was 'tough' till sunset, then the switch was flicked over to 'bite' and we got our limit in no time at all. Once again a CO turned up, this time shouting questions at us from shore....good bit in the vid where i'm holding a slot fish whilst clarifying what vehicle was mine at the landing to the CO. Also met my fishing buddy Lew out ther...he was fishing from shore with his dad, anyway, we spent an hour with some non stop action, upgrading our fishes as we went and had a nice stringer by the end of the day when we were treated to another gorgeous sunset. ANOTHER NICE SUNSET ON EAGLE LAKE VIDEO OF THE DAY'S SHANNANIGANS <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src=" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
