  1. LOL...errrm....yes. In fact i fished that lake on the ice before i ever did in a boat....lets just say i did not know much about fishing then.....let alone ice fishing. I started at the point where it is only 3 feet deep...and thick weeds even in winter. I am surprised we even caught the 2 perch we did that day!
  2. Thanks for all the replies guys. You make a point i often wonder about Terry. I know there are some pretty phenomenal 'fly-in' destinations, but sometimes i find myself checking out fly-in websites and reports and cant help feeling a little sorry for the guests paying what they did for what they got....fishing wise. I get the whole wilderness experience thing, and having a lake all to yourself....still...sometimes i wonder.
  3. Thats awesome! Thanks Drifter...wicked vids...love the second one.
  4. Got out again with my new fishing buddy Cliff. This time to a very small local 'pond'. Cliff was doubtful of the venue choice given that it's so small, practically in town with easy access. I too was sceptical about this lake when it was introduced to me 4 years ago....lol....and after Cliff got his second fish not 10 minutes after we started which measured 26" those doubts faded. We started off with walleye spinners and minnows. I had hammered bronze blade and Cliff had a psychedelic day glow perch pattern blade...he got the big fish...nuff said. When we switched to jigs I was using minnows and leeches, he was using minnows with a chunk of night crawler, I got most of the fish when we were jigging, minnows seemed to be king, however, the last fish caught was a beauty 27" which again went to Cliff....it fell for a piece of night crawler Cliff had put on to try and catch a few of the numerous big perch we were catching. The fish were in the 11' to 12'FOW range, in or around the tall cabbage. The lake probably averages around 8' deep with one spot that gets to around 18' deep. Cliff has fixed the starter on his ATV and we should be hitting up a more remote lake on Monday...till then here's some pics and video of last night's fishing. <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ST5e5qjqCJY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  5. Great report JB! I'm still wiping tears from laughing at your "very serious and slightly scary' pic of you holding up that smb.
  6. No kidding Blair, this weekeend going camping with the wife and kid...should get out in the boat a couple times at least.
  7. I'll never forget the time i was visiting Canada and I saw a guy walking out to his car at 6:30am in his pjs through the snow to his car to be told he was going to get coffee. what the hell! i thought, just make some at home?!?! I was told that he was doing this because 'Tim Horton's' coffee was just soooooooo good. I did not even know what tim hortons was....lol. What makes me laugh is that i've put folgers in the machine at work and told all the timmies freaks that its timmies...they loved it! I know thats kind of mean but i never told them and what you dont know wont hurt you too bad. I also think McDs is better coffee than Tims, hope they dont trick me back....lol...but to be honest i would not really care.
  8. awesome Dana, i still have one of those in the garage...it came with my boat. It will mark fish......sometimes....it will definitely mark schools of bait, and is as good as many modern fishfinders for structure. I love the playback feature,,,stop the screen and playback a few seconds of what just passed, wish i had that on my x67c!
  9. First off i dont think you should look at this as a bait v lure situation. I think creating a dichotomyis not useful. To me bait is bait be it a living organism or a piece of painted metal. There is skill involved with most bait presentations and also times when certain baits will work better for certain conditions or species....for example...musky mike makes a good point about using live suckers later in the year for musky. Practice and experimentation and time.....you will evolve your fishing techniques and skills repetoire this way gauranteed. 3 years ago i never fished the weeds for walleye...now i do.....3 years ago i caught lakers through the ice on large sucker minnows left to dangle....now i almost exclusively jig 4" white tube jigs...... 5 years ago i NEVER EVEN KNEW WHAT A WALLEYE WAS....LOL. Keep doing what your doing...you'll do just fine. Someone mentioned getting a 'mepps aglia'....I WOULD ALSO RECOMMEND THIS!
  10. NO....lol It was a real 'chore' to get our keepers....we threw back so many perfect keepers at the beginning, convinced the bite was to good in too many spots to have all the spots turn off simultaneously when we decided to keep some...we were wrong...the fish went on strike at 6pm, luckily a few were willing to break through the picket lines and get us a respectable stringer. I'm working on it...its a tough job but somebody has to do it right? Not a stupid question at all. To be honest i think the hook is a better more natural way of presenting a live bait on a slip bobber, however...being the lazy sod i am, the jig method means i am not having to add a split shot and tie a hook...as a jig acts as both. I dunno whats happened this year, i have really been getting into some good numbers of fish consistently. I definitely have been paying attention and trying to incorporate some ideas from posts by Ben Beattie and some other gems of advice from other successful walleye fishermen who fish LS. Its not rocket science as you rightly point out to catch a walleye on LS...but without tooting my own horn i certainly feel like this year i have progressed a little bit in terms of being able to at least some of the time figure out a pattern for walleye given any certain set of conditions. Certainly helps to build your confidence having the opportunity to regularly use lac seul as your laboratory to test proven methods and your own new hypotheses. ??? You ever up this way 'B'...gissa a call
  11. You know what NWO...you just might have sold me on trying a baitcaster for jigging...i often have the bail arm open when jigging to adjust for depth...using your thumb on a spool makes a lot of sense...as long as you remember to crank the handle before the hookset...lol..wow...that would make a mess.
  12. LOL Jer....exactly what i thought! I gave up worrying about the paint job on my truck...way to stressful...its a truck...thats what it does! Great report JT....one day i will do some off road adventures too...just collecting all the gadgets still. Cool pics too.
  13. what a set up you have there TJ....enjoy!
  14. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM....skate wings and chips!!!!! Great report...sorry cant help with your question though.
  15. Hi all, Went down to the more south easterly end of Lac Seul last Sunday with a new fishing buddy, he has only been to Lac Seul one other time...so i was kinda pleased the fish co-operated. In fact they were everywhere....shallow (3') and in the thick weeds, In the weeds slightly deeper 10'- 11', on the mud / rock transitions along a shoreline (windswept) in 12' - 15' and on a steep drop off to 45' at around the 28' - 30' mark. By the way....i did curse us and we had to work our socks off later in the day to get a limit to take home....after about 6pm they all shut off!!!??? Either that or we caught every single fish in the area and they were not gonna bite twice...lol. Anyway...good 100+ fish day....good company and banter, awesome weather. Jigs and minnows did the damage mostly...biggest fish...(which got off) fell to 4" sucker minnow as did all the fish above 23". Leeches were not working at all??? The fish would not touch 'em? But adding a chunk of nightcrawler to your jig and minnow often picked up a fish or 2 when a frantic bite eased off slightly. Orange/chartreuse 1/8 to 1/4 oz jigs...nothing fancy required. Just the way i like it. <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/BZURRr4eDMs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  16. awesome pics Dan....shame the write up is in a foreign language
  17. hi folks, absolutely what wayne and fisherman said.....Sculpin.
  18. Hi all, I have found these guys under rocks in Lake wabigoon in front of our house. I know what a Goby looks like....in England they are also known as blennies (sea version) and this is definitely one. I spoke to an MNR guy a couple of years ago about them, he said he did not think that "Round Gobies" had made it into the lakes up here, and was i sure what i had been finding were gobies. I am 99.9% sure it is a goby...but not sure if it is a native or invasive species. Either way i will be calling the nice Biologist lady at the MNR here in town and forwarding the pics and video...just thought i'd see what you good folks think. So...my questions for you all are 1) Is it a goby? 2) If it is, is it invasive or native? Thanks. GOBY? <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VZamkNz8G4w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
  19. WTG on a PB! That was your 1st? WOW Good Job!
  20. Hi All, It's been a busy 1st week of our 'staycation'. My in-laws are up (father, sister and brother in law with their daughter). They have all been up before and my father in law (Dave) and brother in law (Andrew) had said they wanted to fish as often as possible while here...oh....that works! They arrived last Saturday, unpacked by 7pm and wanted to fish from shore in front of the house right after supper. JACK WAS KEEN TO SHOW COUSIN LEXI AND GRANDPA HOW IT'S ALL DONE THEY ALL FISHED HARD IN THE END GRANDPA WON IT WITH A PIKE <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/0ajAP2q-_w4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Sunday was mostly spent organising all our camping stuff for a 2 day stay at the local Provincial Park just 20 minutes up the road, but by 4pm we were all ready to go for Monday so I took the boys out to get some walleye for supper on Wabigoon. WE FOUND THEM! <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/6bztPiKvrVk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> NOTHING HUGE, BUT FAST AND FURIOUS ACTION TO WHET THE BOYS APPETITE FOR MORE NW ONTARIO FISHING. THE BOYS BREATHED IN THE SCENERY ON THE WAY HOME TO A DELICIOUSLY FRESH FISH FRY The next day we headed to Aaron Park and set up camp for 2 nights. Great park by the way, 2 nights $75 with electric and a lake full of bass, pike, lakers and walleye. WE WERE WELL ORGANISED AND CAMP WAS UP AND READY IN UNDER 2 HOURS JACK MADE A NEW FRIEND RIGHT AWAY JACK WAS ALSO VERY EXCITED ABOUT SLEEPING IN A TENT, AND HE AND LEXI WERE HAVING A BLAST WE MANAGED TO GET OUT FOR AN HOUR IN THE BOAT BEFORE SUPPER, THE WIND WAS AT 30+KMH SO TROUT WAS OUT, AND WE ONLY MANAGED A FEW SMALL PIKE AND BASS <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/aca25UKDYzY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> WAS REALLY NICE CAMPING OUT FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH MY BOY, DOING ALL THE CAMPING STUFF...HE WAS TOTALLY ABSORBED BY THE MARSHMALLOW TOASTING PROCESS.... <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/t2zIRCZrhqo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> I was raring to get on the lake early the next morning...I was up at dawn and Dave only got up because I tripped on a rope holding his tent up. He decided to come with me and try and get a trout or 2 for lunch..... WHAT A GORGEOUS MORNING, WIND HAD DIED RIGHT OFF FROM THE NIGHT BEFORE WE EVEN MANAGED 2 NICE KEEPER LAKERS FOR LUNCH AFTER A FRESH TROUT BBQ LUNCH WE ALL HEADED OFF FOR A SWIM THE EARLY MORNING TROUT SESSION TOOK ITS TOLL ON DAVE After our swim poor Jack was exhausted...he went down for his 3 hour nap with mum at around 4pm, Dave was sleeping too and the others took off to town, Andrew needed to get some Tylenol or something. Oh dear...what shall I do, everyone is asleep or in town!?....Darned right, I was headed out in the boat! GOT INTO A NICE TROUT FIRST, RELEASED FOR ANOTHER DAY THEN FOUND THE WALLEYE, NICE ONES TOO, ALL OVER 18" <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/XRf3W34_o3M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> AFTER SUPPER WE HEADED OUT FOR A BOAT TRIP WITH THE KIDS On Wednesday morning we headed home, we spent a good part of the day unpacking and cleaning and by 3pm everyone was asleep. We had a late supper then I took the kids to a small local lake for some perch action...they had been bugging me like crazy all day to go fishing. I think only one perch was caught; the walleye were all over us right under the boat....the kids had a blast! THE LAKE WAS CALM, THE ONLY WAVES WERE MADE BY OUR BOAT ...PERFECT FOR KIDS. <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Njcy7oDq5Rs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Thursday morning was an early start. LAC SEUL HERE WE COME! Andrew was really looking forward to this trip as for one reason or another we never made it up there the last time he was here 2 years ago. I really wanted to find and get him into the fish ...and the fishing did not disappoint....really windy day...but plenty of action...and a few 25"ers for Andrew to remember........ ANDREW'S 1ST LAC SEUL WALLEYE...NOT A BAD START! THE FISHED FLOWED NON STOP ALL DAY <iframe width="560" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/IzQPWakxiy8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Ok...hope some of you made it this far....lol...I know..really long report, but we've been fishing every day except today (Friday) and we still have a week left so I thought I'd better post now. The in laws are off to Winnipeg tomorrow for an overnight, my wife and child are going on a play date...I'm going to go cast for bass on my home lake first thing in the am...report to follow.
