Lots of different ways to utilize the backing. I tape the end of the backing to the bare spool with masking tape. Then wind on the Dacron till there is a little less than 1/4" of room on the spool. Then I tape down the end again. No need to tie the backing to the mono, since you will never get to it while fishing. This eliminates trying to cover knots, and it keeps the bed of the spool smooth. Then you just tie on the mono with an arbor knot, and wind on 250-300 yds of mono. I've been doing it this way for a few years. Works well for me and others I've mentioned it to. I should add that I use 50lb kite string as backing. I bought a 3000 ft spool for $20 a few years ago. I've done many reels, and still have enough left for a few more. The 50 lb fills up the spool faster, and is easy to keep level when winding on. Price is up from three years ago. Try here; https://goodwinds.com/line-winders/braided-dacron.html

^ Very valid points made by bfd! Balance is one of the keys to comfort. I might add that how you hold the rod also makes a huge difference as well. If your wrist is sore, you need to let the portion of the rod behind the reel rest under and against your forearm. Trying to hold all that weight with your wrist will result in severe tendonitis/ carpal tunnel issues. I might add that when it comes time to be setting hooks, or lifting the rod for retrieval of line after every drift, sore shoulders and elbows can be a result. I'm speaking from experience here. (I've had several cortisone shots over the years) Golfers and Tennis players have similar issues when they try and overcome technique or equipment issues with their bodies. I'd recommend that you talk to, and observe CP anglers while fishing. I once sat back and watched a guy so long on the stream that he became concerned for his well being! lol. I then divulged my reasons for watching him, and he was very helpful; thanks!

When you spend the time to learn any skill, (doesn't matter if its casting a CP, or a spinning reel or tying a new knot) repetition and paying attention to the small details, all help. I don't know one person that learned how to cast a Centerpin in a single outing. So enjoy the journey.

Backing saves you money, at the end of the day. I prefer dacron, since it is lighter than old mono, and does not absorb water like mono. It saves money because you put as much dacron on the spool as you need, then only add 200 yds/meters of mono to take it within 1/8" of the lip of the spool. EVERY TIME YOU CHANGE LINE. If you usually reel with your right, it means that you are a left handed person to me. Why change? you probably will cast more accurately and further than you would with your right arm. Ergonomics. Welcome to the fold!

one bag does 5000 sq ft. (50X 100) get two bags. It keeps well;))

Making trip to the US? There is a great grub killer available from Lowes. $20/bag. Has an ingredient called Merit. Manufactured by Bayer. http://www.bayeradvanced.com/grub-control Not available or legal in Canada, but I bring it back every spring from vacation. Also has a fertilizer in it. Available in NY state. Great product. I don't have my lawn being torn up by skunks, possums, voles etc. like some folks.

He touched a lot of folks with his writing. I'm sure he was very happy to have done so. Good for him, the rest of us are better for being able to read his works.

I was out on another stream on Monday in your area, and didn't see any! I made it a point to look for some since the fishing was slow. I did see a few deer, and a hawk that didn't make it through the winter. Very strange spring!

The Koa that Chris used, was purchased by me, from sources in Hawaii. Those sources certify that as Koa is a protected species, only dead, or diseased trees are harvested. The state of Hawaii is very aggressive in protecting it's native species, and the fines are very punitive for those that dare. The pieces I purchased are advertised on Ebay, and the HI DEC monitor all sales. As much as I love the wood, I would not want to cross them.

That's a great question! The weight of the rod plus components totals 8.45 ounces. 23" cork handle, Koa seat and trim, solid titanium Lemke reel seat, Fuji tysg guides, thread and epoxy. That is actually .3 of an ounce less than a similarly built 4-8 13'6" CTS! An added bonus is the fact the rod has significantly more power than the CTS. It should be a real winner! Just waiting for the freaking rain to stop, so I can really give it a test. The Sage One 8136 is high gradient BC big river perfect. It weighs less than this 6 wt built as a float rod. The Sage One blanks are about half the cost of the factory rods.

I will be fishing it in a couple of days! Pics to follow

As already stated, the tag will tell the tale. You will also want to measure the ID of the chimney. Different stoves take different sizes. Sounds like a wood burning chimney to me though. Thy are not cheap.

If people only knew the un-natural things that are in the foods they eat every day, they would not be worried about the minerals that come from the trees. Those minerals are concentrated 40 times, from boiling, just like the sap. You know that 'little crunch' you sometimes get when eating a hot dog? It would scare you to know what it really could be! Some ground has more mineral than others. Most filters out.

My 2012 has an indentation in the sides to slide a 2X6/8 into it sits just behind the hump for the wheels. Works great to keep things from rolling ahead.

Had a similar experience to Terry on Onaman Lake 40 years ago. MNR flew in to check licenses. Dropped out of the sky right beside us. We said we don't have licenses. They were almost salivating by that time. They could hear the dollar signs ringing. We told the COs that we were from Ontario. (For the younger crowd, no licenses for Ontario residents were required). They couldn't believe it. We had to show our drivers licenses...lol. Good folks doing a job that they wanted, and felt lucky to have. I'm sure the present day COs feel the same. When you have done nothing wrong, you have noting to fear. Over exuberant law enforcement officers are nothing new, and usually they get assigned to the boonies. Patience.

Try Sahtu with a little cold Amberbock. He will be fine. Very cool dog Dave, and I'm glad to hear he is doing well! Bill

Canadian Women's hockey is always a struggle for credibility except during the Olympics. These women deserve a ton of praise, especially with the team inner turmoil they have endured; new coach, new captain, (Last 2 months), previous bad beats by the USA. Again they rose to the occasion, and beat the odds. Cherry was great with his opinion and accolades! I can't imagine how terrible the USA team feels after being ahead 2 goals. Thanks Pick!

Do yourself a very big favour, and have it sent as a gift by USPS ( post office). FedEx will rape you on brokerage and duties. Declare value as $60 or less. Lots of experience at this.

I have to disagree on the efficiency of the surgeons knot! It is actually closer to 95%, when tied correctly. I love it in the cold weather, since even numb fingers can tie it. I have been using it for over 30 years, and it is the best and easiest to tie of any line-to-line knot I have found. For mono to mono the double is fine, but for mono to flouro I use a triple. Here is a link to some more info on it. http://frontrangeanglers.com/newsletter/august05/surgeonsknot.htm
