  1. Good sized resident Browns can be pretty voracious feeders after dark, frogs , crayfish and on a flyrod , used poppers more designed for panfish at times with success. ditto on the vacuum sealer, get a good one, pays for itself , not only for fish, home garden produce and roe , but buying in bulk meat on sale and longer term freezing.
  2. I always preferred a nylon rope, being softer and more flexible. The stuff you don't want is the floating , stiff, often yellow in colour polypropylene ropes.
  3. yes, very nice fish and the parking lot is so handy compared to the Niagara River
  4. Horse racing etc. believe me they are working on those plaything , stroke your ego ? if you not fishing for food, just why are you fishing ? enjoy the peace and solitude? why bring a fishing rod? just as peaceful without Yes we are at the top of the food chain and the new p3ta thrust at our fishing tradition acknowledges that with their policy on catch and keep I don't represent them or their thinking, but I am pointing out the arguments and logic they are using, I've hunted 45 years and fished over 50, didn't get married till age 49 cause I was too busy hunting and fishing, probably caught or killed more game than most, only the messenger of their side of the argument.
  5. I think most are missing the point here, this movement to ban C&R fishing is not based on whether the fish feels pain or whether C&R is better for the population of the species. They know they will lose the argument on these grounds, I dare say most animal right groups have more PR spin doctors on staff than trained biologists. Their argument is based solely on whether it is morally and ethically right for humans to reduce an animal to basically a plaything for our enjoyment or to stroke our egos.
  6. Whether or not the fish feels pain or is traumatised by the experience was really not part of the argument. The fact was that once you remove fishing for food out of the equation you have reduced fish to a plaything for our enjoyment and that is morally wrong, not unlike bullfighting, noodle fighting or dog fighting. Want to play , get a video game or Cronzy batter
  7. Regardless of whether it was wise, right or smart, the law was passed. Since when have politicians been wise or smart or even followed biologists advice. Look at the spring bear hunt, there was no evidence that it was hurting the bear population but it is gone and look at the consequences. Looked like, for the most part a cave in to animal rights types. Actually the Swiss have always impressed me as a bunch of straight up type people. Last I heard they had compulsory miltitary service and you got to take your weapons home with you. Not a bunch of left wing liberals.
  8. This idea is not to be taken lightly, Switzerland banned catch and release fishing recently, surprised it didn't make the headlines in this forum. http://fishing.about.com/od/fishingontheba...Swiss_Catch.htm
  9. The casting thing makes sense, yes had that unfortunate experience with the line as well. My first spinner, an Airex " Spinster " and my dad's main reel a "Luxor " both had a fine pipe cleaner like wire that ran in a groove around the bottom of the spool between it and the housing, kept grit and line out. My mistake, never owned one, just remember the profile from river fishing and all these years thought they were rear drag. Actually considering one as a shore casting reel for trout, am I correct about the reputation as good distance casters at least
  10. This is also a good resource for Algonquin and surrounding areas. http://www.algonquinmap.com/
  11. Sorry, my mistake, I thought the one I quoted looked like a brown with the spotting initially. edit : Mike none of the pics were mine , unfortunately.
  12. Tractor Supply Company , TSC Store has quite a selection as well.
  13. I always thought that was the main idea of the skirted spool spinning reel when they came out in the 80's, you could use the exposed skirt like the exposed rim of a fly reel like the old Hardy Marquis or like the rim of a float reel with a bit of finger pressure to momentarily increase the drag.
  14. Word of caution from some one who went through the Blizzard of 77 in southern Niagara where everyone was socked in for days with over 3 feet of snow in 24 hours. The birth rate spiked 18% over normal later that year, be careful.
  15. Welcome, very nice fish and photos, given the background in this pic that's the last species of trout I would have expected. Hope to see more, thanks.
  16. Supernaut, that's the last model of the classic Abu Cardinal 3, they were marketed by Zebco for a lot of years before that, in mostly cream and green without the skirted spool. Still got my black Abu Garcias but lost my old Zebco's when my van was broken into Yeah, they are the ones that converted me to rear drags, best drag on the market at the time, now everyone seem to be saying front drags, what's old become new again.
  17. To almost the man, steelheaders ran those in the 70's / 80's with the odd Daiwa Whisker Tournament , also a rear drag, thrown in the mix. Now, we never had a drag problem and had fish making longer runs than the head shake or brief spurt of a bass or a walleye that didn't fight like it was on life support. My old Cardinals were Zebcos, I don't think Abu Garcia got rights to the name until they marketed a graphite skirted spool remake with the same rear drag and body housing in the late 80's. Near the end of the Zebco run there was some tannish coloured ones as well. BTW Zebco is really an acronym for the full name of "Zero Hour Bomb Company" edit: the Zebcos were made by Abu, kinda strange how Garcia got the bait casters and Zebco marketed the spinners.
  18. Brookies are trump, 9 of brookie beats an ace of pike. Great fish and photos everyone
  19. Have a feeling its going to be a replay of the spring of 2006 when another JS stepped into the crease and did everything but stand on his head to steal a few games and post an impressive final 11 games of the season without a regular time loss and a 9-0-2 record. Unfortunately after that performance he tanked the following year. Deja vu
  20. At this stage of life , couple months shy of 60, if I lost everything, I could make do with replacing my 1: Float rod and a good quality centrepin, steelhead 2: 9 foot 5 wt. fly rod, stream fishing the Grand for browns, specs elsewhere, crappies and gills in spring 3: 6 foot ultralight spinner and old Mitchell 308, concession and culvert hopping for specs, crappies and gills in spring 4: 10 1/2 foot steelhead spinner with medium sized reel, two spools, 8lb test for shore casting browns and 12lb. test for occasional carping. After years of sampling everything, this is what interests me the most now.
  21. Would this person be the same who bailed you out when your boat was headed for the rocks ?
  22. Caught a bat once, fly fishing after dark. Not really sure if it actually took the fly on the backcast or I sorta lined it, man, it was really peed off.
  23. Black ones, white ones, more than likely a result of domestic dog genes in the mix, coydogs. Lots of shades of grey out there. May account for the behavioral change we seeing as well, way bolder than they ever used to be. My mom lives just outside of Fonthill, while walking her dog, a friendly pet runs out to say hello , the owners make no bones about it lineage, it a coyote mix. The shooter was using a shotgun, so I'm assuming the range would have been quite close, probably 50 yds or less. Other than a collar, in some cases your best feature for ID is going to be gait and behaviour . What's that old expression ? " If it looks like an duck, acts like a duck and quacks like a duck "
  24. Wonder why the landowner called in coyote hunters to deal with a supposed coyote problem, livestock or game animal harrassment or predation ? By the actions and behavior of said dog maybe coyotes weren't the culprit.
  25. Post a picture of a good fish here today and it gets viewed further away and by more people than if it was plastered on the front page of the local newspaper fifty years ago.
