  1. In the mid 60's did much the same. Lived a short bike ride from some very private water and stocked ponds on the headwaters of Twelve Mile Creek here in Niagara. We had permission for some property but as always the grass was often greener over the fence, One pond well hidden in the bush had spec's up to 2 lbs., We were snobs even at a young age, we didn't fool around with the lowly stocked bow ponds.
  2. Done, in the lead so far
  3. Grimsby Town Council says we can expect a reduction in property taxes of about 5% this year, we also are Conservative both federally and provincially. A little oasis in the toxic red tide of the last provincial election.
  4. Coyotes didn't exist in southern Ontario in any appreciable numbers until the 70's. Actually until the 70's the deer population was a fraction of what it is today, but we did have a lot of Ring Neck Pheasants that are now gone. Oh and local Canada Geese were in a bad way too back then.
  5. lots of lakes in Haliburton have bows and smallies coexisting, but then rainbows are not a structure orientated fish like brookies.
  6. After that north wind yesterday it's looks like double double for the first 1/2 mile out and reg for the next half mile, be a while before it clears. Couple of years ago , Miller, on this board, caught a brown that looked like 20 + from the pier here, if you look back you should be able to find it. Best I've seen taken off the pier and I've lived almost next door 30 years.
  7. You'd be surprised how late ( mid June ) I've caught Browns shore casting , off shore winds help. Great looking day on the water and nice fish
  8. If you ever get caught like that again, I often use a tube of saltine crackers that I've crushed in the tube in a meatloaf, maybe adjust your salt.
  9. Call the C.O. she can be charged for interfering with a legal hunt, video is evidence.
  10. Nice to see that Brookies are making a return to the put and take ponds. As a kid we often went to the pond at the St.Williams Forestry Station and nursery as a family picnic. At first Brookies were the species caught, early 60's a few years later they changed to Rainbows. The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority pond at St. Johns was the same, I could bike there and it opened about 1960 and had specs in it for a few years and then switched to bows.
  11. more like 35 years ago, by 1985 people were gravitating to centre pins and float rods. Remember the Swann articles , pictures usually showed him using a silver 1810 Shakespeare closed face. edit: was it OOD or was it Chronzy's mag?
  12. Sounds like the Dave Steib curse, no offense whenever he pitched , good stats except for the win column.
  13. They put those on top of the escarpment here , not enough wind below
  14. Unless it is a repair , that small dark wood triangle on the end of the deck at both ends is a pretty unique feature, could help with the ID if it is a trademark of the manufacturer. " Chestnut " was another well known maker, think they were in the Muskokas. I'd look at $1500 as a minimum, more if it is a desireable collectable. edit: It is not the neighbour I originally thought, looking at an old pic he had an thin ash or oak board running lengthwise down the centre. I remember this one being built, glad it is still being put to good use. http://www.canoemuseum.ca/blog/2014/09/11/season-of-the-beast
  15. i'm guesstimateing this would have been 62/63. The Pen Centre at that time was still pretty new and an open air shopping centre far smaller than today's enclosed mall. I grew up on the Canborough Rd, between Ridgeville and Fenwick, just west of your Fonthill.
  16. Don't you dip net or spear suckers ?? think it is legal this time of year at least in some places. used to get a bunch of small 10 / 12 inchers spawning in 40 Mile Creek here, about this time of year.
  17. Could possibly be a " Red House Canoe " the seats look like Jim Holman's handiwork. He was a neighbour back in Pelham , couple miles west of Fonthill on the Canborough Road. He built canoes starting back in the 60's , I doubt he is still at it, he was a vet so he be pushing 90 now. His canoes were cedar strip and covered with light fiberglass cloth and resin instead of canvas. He was very good at wicker work and also did snow shoes and some wicker furniture. He has a large freighter canoe he made at the Canoe Museum.
  18. Yeah , but then again I remember when Donnie Campbell had the marina inside the harbour and to get to Lake Ontario you has to go under the QEW bridge.
  19. Bettman rigged the Canadian matchups , get rid of the Canadian teams to keep more dollars in the states
  20. Why just cops?? what about teachers, health professionals, nursing home attendants, anyone who works with children, assembly line workers, once you start it's a slippery slope
  21. I had a combo very similar, used for the better part of 20 years, caught a lot of firsts and bests on it. It was early 60's vintage Shakespeare "Wonderrod ", old timers will remember the their " Howald Process " and the logo " the straight fiber rod with the spiral markings " . Cheap rods were still solid fiber glass back then. It was teamed up with a blue Ambidex No.4 spinning reel. The rod I recall came from the Coles Book Store at the Pen Center in St Catharines, surprisingly they had a very good selection of fishing tackle in those days, I don't recall if the fishing tackle was unique to this store. The reel came from the downstairs sporting goods dept of Herzog's Mens Wear on St Paul in St. Catharines. Both unlikely places today to buy tackle. Shakespeare had a factory that we used to pass going north up around Barrie, probably on the 11 or the 427. Edit : the rod and the reel were both under $17, but actually decent gear in their day.
  22. Guess you don't have to look at a rusted out piece of scrap iron everyday, nothing cool about it, they put shingles on a steel hulled boat and a couple of iron pipes for masts to make it look like an old frigate or something. Maybe we should have some older pimped out cars abandoned in the ditches along the highways cause they looked " CooL ".
  23. I went away to university at 19 and didn't get married till I was 49, so I had 30 years to develop my cooking skills. Like other guys I am a good cook, probably better than my wife , but I don't fool around with baking ( other than pizza ) my wife does cakes, cookies and dessert stuff. Oh , I did do bread for quite a few years, guess that is baking.
  24. yeah, it's a lot safer here where only the criminals have guns
  25. On occasion I've had something hit a rigger hard enough the thing shuddered loudly but the line was still attached to the release, always figured a King hit the cannonball.
