  1. The bar is just to the west of the mouth although the mouth can produce lots of fish too. The Bar has less current but sometimes wind. A trolling motor anchor would help keep lines short and tight. Lots of fun. It's such a big river mouth that you never know what might be caught!
  2. Stupid move for sure but lets say her car stalled for some reason or there was an accident in front of her. Everyone must travel at a speed and pay attention such that you can stop in such circumstances.
  3. I've had Smith photochromatic brownish tint and polarized glasses that were great but heavy. My understanding is that Smith can be difficult to work with on warranty and repairs. Rapala ones from CTC were ok for $20 buck but the fell apart after a year and one pair had a noticeable distortion. I've had Maui Jims for the last four years in prescription and they are the best so far. Not cheap but with the prescription I never have them off my head unless my regular glasses are on - in which case they are in the sturdy case they provide. Maui Jims seem to have exceptional polarization (all their glasses - not an option). So much so that they get get by with less tint to block out sun. I can were mine in really low light or on sunny days. A stereo is only as good as your ears or the room and the same goes for glasses. Some percentage of people need glasses but don't wear them so why buy $$ glasses.
  4. Just drill in some 2x4 across the joists and anchor the rack where you please.
  5. Bananas! These guys are crazy hardcore stupid! The last 2mins are nuts. Where did his buddy go? Is the link supposed to show up like that?
  6. http://www.theatlanticcities.com/jobs-and-economy/2012/08/why-have-so-many-cities-and-towns-given-away-so-much-money-bass-pro-shops-and-cabelas/2906/ Here in Peterborough the selection is pretty thin - mainly Canadian Tire. I always thought this was odd given the fishing opportunities. I suppose people buy their gear closer to home. I wonder if this competition style will drop prices over what small shops could do. I'd have to factor in the cost of gas and the aggravation of being far away. Not sure if the consumer is winning.
  7. I honestly can't tell which parts are commercial and show. In a half hour show there is 8 minutes of commercials (22 minutes of actual fishing show), part of that is eaten up by the intro and outro. Then they throw in more product talk e.g., Muskol, Cooper tires, Ram trucks. Overall there is maybe 10 minutes of fishing. Not all shows do this to the same degree. Prefer to watch other shows including the wealth of online stuff e.g., Uncut and New Fly
  8. I have a few for safe keeping. Might be worth something one day.
  9. This gal can fish with me anytime http://www.moldychum.com/ Fridays pin-up always a treat.
  10. Quote "I'm in the market for something bigger now. Been looking for weeks, and still undecided. So much new stuff that's not really "Proven". I don't know what way to go. " Ditto. I'm due next year and there is nothing out there I'm interested in getting my hands on. If I had to decide tomorrow it would likely be a Taco. For now I'll keep my so so good Escape going. I really wish they would downsize the Toyota's to their 2003 size and drop in a diesel. Much of my fishing is long distance and walk wade or canoe but sometimes the roads are rough and snowy.
  11. Yikes. I contemplated not watching but thought I might learn something. So how many people have dash cams? I don't. Do they give them away along the 17? Seems popular in Russia. What gives.
  12. Check out Publican House Brewery http://www.thepublicanhouse.com/ourbeers.php in Peterborough. Yummm The Publican House Ale This full flavoured ale has unique Pilsner attributes, creating well balanced malt and hop character. 13. Well I went through the process of assembling a rod via Mudhole. Cost came out to $240 plus whatever taxes ($270) and duty (mystery number here). Fifty bones for shipping to Canada. That hurts on principle. The total could easily run $350 at the door. My excitement was guarded as soon as I saw it was a US website. At that price I'm close to some higher end and many lower end rods; however, none would be as sweet a 12 footer spiral. I have built four rods (Loomis and St.Croix ~20yrs ago) I've never broken one and would hate to because I'm a little unsure about the warranty and I'd have to rebuild which takes time. Don't know how warranty coverage would work on the MHX blank. Not expecting much and the shipping is steep. I buy rods for the quality and for the warranty and there is a balance $100 for 5 year, $250 for life, or something like that. It's nice not having to worry about damage, not having to rebuild. Just send it in and get it back for the next trip. Not saying I'm clumsy just appreciate the insurance. For now I'm still looking and waiting for the Rapala site to come back online!
  14. Well thanks for the leads and suggestions. I saw the Raven 111/2' RPX sounds great but yes a bit pricey. What's a Raven warranty like? I had no idea about Mudhole. Sounds great. There once was a time when rod building was done by a few and parts were hard to come-by. Now there are whole websites! The MHX blank kits are priced right. I assume you get all the parts and glue it together yourself? The MHX ST1442 Steelhead Rod Blank interests me but it's sold for a c-pin rod. I wonder if I could make a baitcaster with spiral guide construction? At that price I'd have no worries. Rapala site is down, have look later. Thanks again for the tips.
  15. Looking to replace a St.Croix Avid 10.6 baitcaster rod ML 6-10lb test. I lost mine - don't ask. I need another, either the 6-10 or 8-12lbs model would do. I really like the St.Croix build, particularly their cork, and their warranty. Alternatively, I could go with a different company. Ideally I'd like something a little longer e.g., 11.5 -12.5 ft. Spiral wrapped guide would be a bonus. Any help would be greatly appreciated. AVC106MLF2 10'6" ML Fast 2 6 - 10# 1⁄8 - 5⁄8 $260 AVC106MF2 10'6" M Fast 2 8 - 12# 1⁄4 - 3⁄4 $260
  16. A skink (lizard and already dead) for bass. Cigarette butts half peeled and flared like a tube bait for brook trout in Algonquin. Many bugs peeled off the front of fishing vehicles or emerging stoneflies for trout - don't stay on hooks well. Salamanders when I ran out of bait on the Niagara River. Before you judge these examples were when I was in my teens. Bacon slice on 5 of diamonds for bull trout. Bull trout also had a fondness for fighting 30cm grayling. Once caught a large carp on a ruby-eye spoon - unexpected. Heard a crazy story once about guys rigging up a squirrel and repeatedly pulling the poor thing off a surfboard in muskie infested waters.
  17. Great Sky! Maybe Drifter can provide some background info on the teepees. Looks like a party.
  18. After using nanofil a few times I spent a few hours in the garage tying knots on a large #2 saltwater hook. I then hooked the hook onto a spring scale to see what works. I wanted to decide on one multi purpose knot. The Triline knot was the winner. http://www.animatedknots.com/trilene/index.php?Categ=fishing&LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com 12# raven was breaking at 17lbs #10 nanofil ~ 12lbs. The difference with Nanofil, being the slipperiest line, is I wrap it 10 times vs. 5 times for floro and mono. For Nanofil I had to wear gloves that stuff is so thin. Honestly the hook would bend really bad before breaking the knot. Once the knot, or line, snapped the hook would spring back into shape. Made me wonder how many fish I've lost to hooks bending, especially when trying to stop a fish that insist on heading back out to the lake for some reason. I now use strong Owner hooks for bows, treble or single, fly or bead. Double uni for attaching similar thickness lines together. Perfection loop and Rapala for loops.
  19. The Simpsons Blinky does come to mind. Instead of walleye he's a trieye. Seriously. It could be a stocked hatchery fish: many live that shouldn't. The ones out of BOQ have always scared me - too many tumours.
  20. Sadly, I've only once been close to being spooled. The time in question I had a pink on while fly fishing the chuck near Campbell River and a seal grabbed it. Talk about screaming reels. Near the bottom of the reel I just stopped the reel from turning and the seal let go! Some sturgeon likely would have spooled me if not for going after them with a canoe. I got fish the big lake Ontario more it seems. To some degree you can avoid heavy lines if you take care of your line and change it at least once a year.
  21. Take a look at the Ski Doo Tundra LT. It is one of the lightest sleds and has one of the lowest pounds per square inch mass with a 154 x 16" track. Large storage area on back and can be converted to a two up easily. Get fat ski skins, stud the track, and add some scratches for when the snow is gone and ice is all you have. http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-ATVs-snowmobiles-snowmobiles-2010-TUNDRA-55O-LT-W0QQAdIdZ555132840 I have a 2-up Skandic with a small 380 fan so I can't comment much on the liquid vs fan debate. My biggest concern with my fan is over heating on a warm day with tons of slush. Studs are needed period, especially on icy hills and for stopping fast. Fan cooled machines need scratches to lube the sliders and liquids need them to to cool the engine. I here the newer 600 ACE motors are very nice although add a little weight.
  22. To a very large degree its the mass of the vehicle that determines the fuel consumption. It's physics. In most cases the bigger engine makes sense particularly on longer hilly drives and passing transports etc. Driving habits being equal a large engine will add some weight but it's small e.g. 1 mpg. Most truck these days are big. Even the Toyota Taco is big. Where did the small trucks go! Saving on weight (fuel) is more easily done by getting out of a truck based SUV but then many of those can't tow more than 1500-2000 lbs safely. Got a big boat or a large family then you'll likely need a big vehicle. If driving short a distance to a decent ramp than you could get away with a smaller vehicle. 99% of the time you'll be towing nothing.
  23. Great post. Fished all my life and plan to die on some river or frozen lake. Don't go fishing as much these days bc of family and work but the trips are definitely more epic usually involving travel, overnight stays, good times. Now I wonder once and a while how many more years will body parts last to keep me out there. Fishing different ways, in different areas, testing theories, and fishing with new people can make it interesting. Sometimes I enjoy taking people out just to put them on fish and watch and enjoy the show.
  24. Looks like a whole lota fun!
  25. I bet a person with a MSc will get the job. That's tells you how competitive it is.
